Inspired by Umesh, Guided by Dhoni and Kohli: Yash Thakur’s Unlikely Rise to India
Yash Thakur’s journey to international cricket has been anything but straightforward. The Vidarbha fast bowler spent years trying to establish himself in domestic cricket, dealt with injury setbacks and faced long periods on the IPL bench. Yet persistence, along with advice from Umesh Yadav, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, helped shape the mindset that eventually took him to India.
Thakur, now 27, recently made his India T20I debut on the Zimbabwe tour and has collected four wickets in two matches. His story is less about a sudden breakthrough and more about repeatedly finding ways forward when opportunities were limited.
Umesh Yadav Was an Early Inspiration
Thakur’s connection with fast bowling began in Nagpur, where he grew up watching India’s 2011 World Cup triumph.
His path crossed with Umesh Yadav at the Vidarbha Cricket Association. What initially began with Thakur approaching his senior for a photograph turned into an interaction that stayed with him.
Yadav encouraged the youngster to bowl with conviction and follow his instinct as a fast bowler. That advice became an early source of motivation for Thakur as he worked his way through Vidarbha’s age-group system.
Thakur represented India in the Under-19 Asia Cup-winning campaign in 2016 before making his List A, first-class and T20 debuts in the following years.
But the journey was not linear.
Injury Interrupted His Progress
In 2021, an abdominal tear forced Thakur out of action for roughly four to five months.
For a domestic cricketer trying to move up the ladder, such an interruption can be costly. Instead of allowing the setback to derail his career, Thakur returned strongly during the 2022-23 season.
He produced career-best returns at that stage, taking 15 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and 17 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. Those performances finally opened the door to the IPL.
Lucknow Super Giants bought him for ₹45 lakh at the 2023 auction after he had gone unsold the previous year.
The opportunity changed his exposure, even if it did not immediately make him a regular star.
The IPL Brought a Big Break
Thakur's first IPL season with Lucknow produced 13 wickets, giving him an opportunity to bowl alongside established players and experience the intensity of the tournament.
But one of the biggest moments of his IPL career came in 2024.
Against Gujarat Titans, Mayank Yadav left the field after bowling only one over. KL Rahul then turned to Thakur, who was suddenly given the responsibility of defending 163.
Thakur responded spectacularly.
He finished with 5/30, his first five-wicket haul in T20 cricket, and was named Player of the Match. His variations, including slower deliveries and scrambled-seam balls, helped him pick up key wickets.
It appeared to be the breakthrough that could transform his career.
Instead, another difficult phase followed.
Dhoni Helped Him Understand Pressure
Playing in front of huge IPL crowds brought a different kind of pressure.
Thakur recalled speaking with MS Dhoni about his nerves. Dhoni's message was simple: pressure and nervousness would not suddenly disappear just because he reached a higher level.
Instead of overthinking the moment, Thakur was encouraged to let things settle and focus on the game.
That advice became part of his approach to high-pressure situations.
For a fast bowler, that mental adjustment can be as important as adding another variation to the bowling arsenal.
A bad delivery is often followed by another ball within seconds. The ability to reset quickly is therefore crucial.
When IPL Opportunities Disappeared, Kohli Offered Perspective
The next challenge was perhaps more frustrating.
After his time with Lucknow Super Giants, Thakur moved to Punjab Kings. But regular playing opportunities remained difficult to find.
Instead of hiding his frustration, Thakur spoke to Virat Kohli about it.
Kohli's advice focused on preparation rather than selection. Thakur said Kohli encouraged him not to spend too much energy worrying about the future and to remain grateful for the opportunities already received.
More importantly, he was advised to improve his preparation every day so that whenever an opportunity arrived, he would be ready for it.
That approach became particularly relevant as Thakur returned his attention to domestic cricket.
Domestic Cricket Became the Foundation
Thakur's rise was built largely on consistency away from the IPL spotlight.
Since his Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy debut in 2018-19, he has taken 81 wickets at an economy rate of 7.04, according to the report detailing his journey. He was also Vidarbha's leading wicket-taker in the 2025-26 season, finishing with 18 wickets.
His performances during Vidarbha's successful 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign further strengthened his case.
He was the team's leading wicket-taker and produced an important spell in the semifinal against Karnataka, including the wicket of Devdutt Padikkal. Those performances helped push him towards India A selection and eventually the national setup.
This is an important part of Thakur's story.
His international opportunity did not arrive simply because of one spectacular IPL spell. It came after years of accumulating wickets in domestic cricket.
From Waiting for Chances to Playing for India
The India call-up reportedly arrived unexpectedly.
While collecting his luggage at Nagpur airport, Thakur received a call informing him about his selection. He initially thought the person telling him was joking.
The debut itself brought another reminder of the mental side of his journey.
Thakur admitted to feeling nervous before his first T20I. But once he stepped onto the field, he returned to the attacking mindset that had carried him through domestic cricket.
He picked up the wicket of Brian Bennett with a slower delivery, giving him a memorable start to his international career.
He has since played two T20Is for India and taken four wickets.
Why Yash Thakur’s Story Stands Out
Thakur's rise offers a different picture of how Indian fast bowlers can reach the national team.
There was no uninterrupted climb from age-group cricket to India.
Instead, there were injuries, periods of limited IPL opportunities, selection uncertainty and the pressure of having to prove himself repeatedly in domestic competitions.
The guidance from senior players also came at different stages.
Umesh Yadav provided early inspiration when Thakur was developing as a young fast bowler. Dhoni helped him understand how to deal with pressure and nerves. Kohli encouraged him to focus on preparation rather than worrying about selection.
The common thread is not a specific bowling technique. It is mindset.
What Comes Next for Thakur?
Making an international debut is an achievement, but establishing a long-term place in India's fast-bowling group will be considerably harder.
India has a deep pool of pace options, particularly in T20 cricket. Thakur will therefore need to continue producing strong domestic numbers while making the most of every international opportunity.
His ability to use slower balls, changes of pace and scrambled-seam deliveries gives him tools suited to T20 cricket. But consistency will ultimately determine how far his international career goes.
For now, his emergence is a reward for a player who kept preparing even when selection was uncertain.
Final Takeaway
Yash Thakur's journey from Vidarbha's domestic circuit to India is a story of persistence rather than overnight success. Inspired early by Umesh Yadav and later guided by the experiences of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, he learned to focus on preparation, manage pressure and make the most of limited opportunities.
His four wickets in two T20Is are only the beginning. The bigger challenge is converting this long-awaited opportunity into a sustained international career.
