Sukhoi Still Matters: Why the Indian Air Force Needs the Su-30MKI Even in the Rafale and Tejas Era



The Sukhoi Su-30MKI may no longer be India's newest fighter, but it remains one of the most important aircraft in the Indian Air Force's combat fleet. At a time when Rafale represents high-end imported multirole capability and Tejas is emerging as India's indigenous light fighter, the Su-30MKI continues to occupy a role that neither aircraft can simply replace.

The reason is straightforward: the Su-30MKI is a heavy, long-range, twin-engine multirole fighter built around range, payload and endurance. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) officially describes it as a twin-seater, multirole, long-range fighter, bomber and air-superiority aircraft.

And India's continued investment in the aircraft makes the point even clearer. In December 2024, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with HAL for 12 additional Su-30MKI aircraft worth approximately ₹13,500 crore, including taxes and duties. The aircraft are being manufactured at HAL's Nashik division, with reported indigenous content of 62.6%.

So why does India still need the Sukhoi?

The Su-30MKI Is India's Heavy Fighter

The biggest difference between the three aircraft is their design philosophy.

Tejas is a lightweight single-engine fighter. Rafale is a sophisticated medium-weight twin-engine multirole fighter. The Su-30MKI is substantially larger and designed for long-range missions with significant weapons and fuel loads.

That size matters.

A heavy fighter can carry considerable fuel, sensors and weapons while retaining the endurance needed for missions over long distances. HAL says the Su-30MKI has twin engines, thrust-vectoring capability, fly-by-wire controls and in-flight refuelling capability.

This gives the aircraft a role that is difficult to replicate simply by purchasing more lightweight fighters.

Long Range Is One of Sukhoi's Biggest Advantages

Modern air warfare is not simply about which aircraft can fly fastest.

Range, endurance and the ability to remain on station can be equally important.

The Su-30MKI's large airframe gives the IAF a platform suited to long-range operations. In-flight refuelling further expands its operational flexibility.

This is particularly relevant for a country with India's geography and two major security theatres. A fighter capable of carrying substantial fuel and weapons can offer commanders more options when missions require distance and endurance.

Tejas, meanwhile, is designed around the lightweight-fighter concept, while Rafale provides a more compact high-end multirole platform.

The three therefore complement each other rather than performing exactly the same job.

Sukhoi Can Carry Heavy Weapons

Another reason the Su-30MKI remains relevant is its weapons-carrying capacity.

HAL's technical material notes that the aircraft can carry bombs and different types of guided and unguided missiles on 12 hard points.

India has also demonstrated the aircraft's ability to carry major indigenous weapon systems.

The IAF successfully integrated the air-launched version of the BrahMos missile with the Su-30MKI. The Ministry of Defence said the integration provided the IAF with a long-range stand-off strike capability against targets at sea or on land.

That combination is strategically important.

A large fighter carrying a long-range weapon can potentially launch the weapon from considerable stand-off distance, allowing the aircraft itself to avoid entering the immediate engagement zone of the target.

Why Rafale Does Not Make Sukhoi Obsolete

The Rafale is undoubtedly a highly capable fighter, but that does not mean it makes the Su-30MKI unnecessary.

Rafale brings a modern integrated combat system, advanced sensors, electronic warfare capabilities and a broad multirole weapons portfolio. Its relatively smaller size also makes it suitable for a wide range of missions.

But replacing a large existing heavy-fighter fleet with Rafale would not simply be a matter of swapping one aircraft for another.

The two aircraft have different operating concepts, logistics, fleet structures and mission characteristics.

India therefore gains more flexibility by operating both.

Rafale can provide a high-end multirole capability, while Su-30MKI supplies heavy-fighter capacity and long-range weapons carriage.

And What About Tejas?

Tejas is perhaps the most strategically important aircraft for India's long-term indigenous fighter ambitions.

HAL describes the LCA programme as an indigenous fighter programme, and the Mk1A incorporates modern systems including an AESA radar and electronic-warfare capabilities.

But Tejas is not intended to be a direct one-for-one replacement for every capability offered by a heavy fighter.

Its lightweight design has its own advantages, including the ability to provide a relatively smaller and more indigenous fighter platform.

The IAF therefore needs different classes of aircraft.

Think of it as a fleet rather than a competition: Tejas adds numbers and indigenous capability, Rafale adds high-end multirole capability, and Sukhoi provides heavy-fighter muscle.

Sukhoi Is Also Becoming More Indian

One of the most interesting developments is that the Su-30MKI is no longer simply a Russian-origin aircraft maintained through an imported supply chain.

India has progressively developed domestic manufacturing, overhaul, component production and systems expertise around the platform.

HAL's Nashik division currently supports the IAF's Su-30MKI fleet through spares, repairs, overhaul and other activities.

HAL also manufactures the AL-31FP engines for the Su-30MKI at its Koraput facility under licence.

This domestic ecosystem is strategically valuable because maintaining a large fighter fleet requires much more than simply producing aircraft.

It requires engines, avionics, spare parts, maintenance infrastructure, repair capability and trained personnel.

The Upgrade Programme Could Give Sukhoi a New Lease of Life

The most important question is not whether the Su-30MKI is an older design.

It is whether the aircraft can remain relevant after upgrades.

HAL management has described a proposed Su-30 upgrade programme involving extensive avionics changes, including radar, mission computers and displays. HAL said in 2025 that the programme was expected to involve the upgrade of 84 aircraft, with an estimated value of around ₹60,000 crore, subject to the necessary approvals and programme progression.

This is significant because modern fighter capability is heavily influenced by electronics and weapons integration.

An upgraded airframe with modern radar, mission computers, electronic warfare and weapons can remain operationally relevant far longer than its original configuration would suggest.

HAL's 2026 investor discussion also indicated that the Su-30 programme remains active, with 12 newly contracted aircraft scheduled for production over the coming years.

Sukhoi Also Has a Large Indian Industrial Ecosystem

For India, the Su-30MKI is not merely an aircraft programme.

It has become an industrial ecosystem involving manufacturing, overhaul, engines, avionics, spares and indigenous component development.

HAL's avionics operations have supplied and supported systems for Russian-origin aircraft including the Su-30MKI, while the company has developed broader expertise in upgrading and maintaining aircraft throughout their life cycles.

This matters from both a defence and economic perspective.

A large domestic maintenance and manufacturing ecosystem can reduce dependence on overseas suppliers and create capabilities that can eventually support India's future fighter programmes.

The Real Strength Is the Combination

It is tempting to ask whether Sukhoi, Rafale or Tejas is India's best fighter.

That is the wrong way to look at the fleet.

Modern air power depends on aircraft working with missiles, radar, electronic warfare, airborne early-warning systems, refuelling aircraft, intelligence and secure communications.

The IAF's participation in Exercise Garuda 25, for example, involved Su-30MKIs operating alongside IL-78 aerial refuelling aircraft and C-17 transport aircraft in coordinated missions with the French Air and Space Force.

That illustrates the broader point: the fighter is only one part of the combat system.

Why India Still Needs the Sukhoi

The Su-30MKI remains relevant because it fills several important requirements at once:

  • Heavy-fighter capability
  • Long-range operations
  • Large weapons-carrying capacity
  • Twin-engine redundancy
  • In-flight refuelling capability
  • Long-range stand-off weapon integration
  • Established Indian manufacturing and MRO infrastructure
  • Potential for extensive avionics and weapons upgrades

Rafale brings a sophisticated high-end multirole capability. Tejas strengthens India's indigenous light-fighter capability. But neither makes a heavy long-range platform automatically unnecessary.

In fact, India's strategy makes more sense when these aircraft are viewed as complementary rather than competing for the same role.
