Why Is Neogen Stock Surging Today? NEOG Earnings and Guidance Explained

Neogen Corporation (NASDAQ: NEOG) stock is surging in premarket trading today after the food-safety and animal-health company delivered better-than-expected fiscal first-quarter results and raised its full-year 2027 guidance.

Neogen shares closed at $11.96 on October 6, down 8.1% during the regular session, but the stock rebounded sharply after the earnings release. Premarket trading showed shares around $13.40, up roughly 12%, as investors reacted to the stronger-than-expected results and improved outlook.

The move is particularly notable because NEOG had already gained substantially over the past year. The latest earnings report gives investors a fresh reason to reassess whether Neogen's long-running operational turnaround is beginning to translate into more consistent growth and profitability.

Why Is Neogen Stock Surging Today?

The biggest catalyst is Neogen's fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings report, released after the market closed on October 6.

Revenue reached $222.8 million, up 6.5% from $209.2 million a year earlier and comfortably above the roughly $208.2 million Wall Street expectation. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.08 per share, compared with the $0.05 consensus estimate.

That means Neogen beat expectations on both major headline metrics.

The company also reported 8.1% core revenue growth, a measure that strips out certain factors such as acquisitions and divestitures to provide a clearer view of underlying business performance. Both major operating segments delivered solid core growth.

For investors, the combination of a revenue beat, earnings beat and stronger underlying growth is a powerful short-term catalyst.

Neogen Raised Its Fiscal 2027 Guidance

The other major reason NEOG stock is rising today is the company's upgraded outlook.

Neogen now expects fiscal 2027 revenue of $885 million to $890 million, compared with its previous range of $880 million to $885 million. It also raised its adjusted EBITDA guidance to $181 million to $183 million.

EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, is commonly used to assess the operating performance of a company before financing and certain accounting costs.

The guidance increase matters because it suggests management believes the improvement seen during the first quarter can continue.

The company expects first-half core growth of approximately 3.5%, while management said operational improvements should help support margin expansion later in the fiscal year.

For a company that has spent the past several quarters working through operational problems, a raised forecast can be more important to investors than a single quarterly earnings beat.

Food Safety Business Delivered Strong Growth

Neogen's Food Safety segment was a key contributor to the latest results.

Revenue from Food Safety increased 7.4% to $163.2 million, with core growth of 8.1%. The business includes testing products and solutions used by food producers and processors to identify pathogens, allergens, toxins and other potential safety issues.

Animal Safety also performed well.

Revenue increased 4.2% to $59.6 million, with core growth of 8.0%.

The broad-based nature of the improvement is important. Investors are not seeing growth concentrated in only one small product category.

However, management also cautioned that some of the quarter's growth benefited from order timing and comparisons with distributor inventory adjustments in the prior year. That means investors should not assume the entire 8.1% core-growth rate will continue at the same pace every quarter.

Profitability Is Improving Too

Another positive signal is the improvement in operating profitability.

Neogen reported adjusted EBITDA of $41.6 million, representing an adjusted EBITDA margin of 18.7%. The margin improved by roughly 170 basis points year over year.

Free cash flow also improved significantly, reaching $4.7 million, approximately $18 million better than the year-ago period.

The improvement in cash generation is especially important because Neogen still carries substantial debt following its expansion and integration of the former 3M Food Safety business.

Management said it repaid $20 million of term debt in June and another $10 million at the end of September.

That gives investors another potential catalyst: if cash flow continues improving, Neogen can gradually strengthen its balance sheet.

The Genomics Sale Could Help Reduce Debt

Neogen is also progressing toward the previously announced sale of its global Genomics business to Zoetis.

The company expects the transaction to generate approximately $140 million of net proceeds, with the majority intended for debt reduction. Regulatory reviews in Australia and New Zealand are expected to reach a final decision by the end of December, according to management.

If completed as planned, the transaction could materially improve Neogen's financial flexibility.

Management expects the proceeds to help bring net leverage below three times at closing and closer to 2.5 times by the end of the fiscal year.

That does not eliminate the company's debt burden, but it could make the balance sheet more manageable.

Petrifilm Transition Is Another Important Catalyst

Investors are also watching Neogen's transition of Petrifilm manufacturing.

The company said the first transferred product SKU has been fully validated and that the planned multi-quarter manufacturing transition is expected to begin in November 2026.

The transition is strategically important because the former 3M Food Safety business is a major part of Neogen's operations.

Management expects the manufacturing changes to eventually improve efficiency and reduce some of the costs associated with running duplicated production infrastructure. Longer-term, the company has indicated that operational improvements could support additional margin expansion.

But this is not an immediate earnings windfall. The transition itself will take multiple quarters, so execution remains an important risk.

Investor Day Could Keep NEOG in Focus

There is another reason today's move could attract additional attention.

Neogen is holding an Investor Day on October 7, where management is expected to provide more detail on its strategic transformation, commercial capabilities, innovation pipeline and operational-excellence initiatives.

That event could give investors more information about how management intends to turn the recent improvement into sustainable long-term growth.

The timing is favorable for the company because the Investor Day comes immediately after an earnings report that exceeded expectations.

If management provides credible targets around revenue growth, margins, innovation and debt reduction, the market could receive another reason to reassess the stock.

On the other hand, investors should distinguish between current results and longer-term targets. Strong guidance and strategic plans still have to be executed.

What Does the Neogen Stock Rally Mean for Investors?

The latest move suggests the market is becoming more confident that Neogen's turnaround is gaining traction.

The company has now delivered several quarters of improving underlying performance, while the latest quarter combined growth with better margins, stronger cash flow and raised guidance.

Still, NEOG is not without risks.

The company remains exposed to execution risks surrounding the Petrifilm manufacturing transition, debt levels and the planned Genomics divestiture. Some of the latest quarter's growth also benefited from timing and comparison factors.

And after a substantial rise in the stock over the past year, valuation becomes increasingly important. A strong business improvement does not automatically mean the shares will continue rising at the same pace.

What Investors Should Watch Next

For investors following the Neogen stock outlook, several developments are particularly important:

  • Investor Day commentary: Look for concrete details on long-term growth and margin plans.

  • Food Safety growth: This remains Neogen's largest segment and an important driver of the turnaround.

  • Petrifilm transition: Watch for evidence that the manufacturing transfer proceeds without major disruption.

  • Free cash flow: Continued improvement could accelerate debt repayment.

  • Genomics divestiture: Regulatory approval and the eventual use of proceeds will affect the balance sheet.

  • Adjusted EBITDA margin: Sustained margin expansion would strengthen the turnaround case.

  • Future core growth: Investors will want to see whether the recent 8.1% rate can be maintained after temporary timing benefits fade.

Bottom Line

Neogen stock is surging today because the company delivered a stronger-than-expected fiscal Q1 2027, raised its full-year revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance, and showed continued improvement in its operational turnaround. Revenue rose 6.5% to $222.8 million, while adjusted EPS of $0.08 exceeded the $0.05 consensus estimate.

The bigger story is that Neogen is showing improvement across Food Safety and Animal Safety while also generating better cash flow and reducing debt.

The next test is whether management can sustain that progress. Today's Investor Day, the Petrifilm manufacturing transition and the planned Genomics divestiture should provide important clues about whether the latest earnings strength represents a temporary improvement or a more durable transformation of the business.
