Venture Global Stock Jumps on ConocoPhillips LNG Deal

Venture Global Stock Jumps on 20-Year ConocoPhillips LNG Supply Deal

Venture Global (NYSE: VG) shares climbed about 3% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the LNG exporter announced a 20-year supply agreement with ConocoPhillips. Under the deal, ConocoPhillips will purchase 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefied natural gas from Venture Global beginning in 2030.

The agreement gives Venture Global another major long-term customer while strengthening ConocoPhillips' growing LNG portfolio. For investors, the deal is important because long-duration LNG contracts can provide greater visibility into future volumes and help support the economics of large export projects.

The announcement also comes as global LNG markets remain heavily influenced by geopolitical disruptions, supply diversification and rising demand for flexible gas supplies.

Venture Global Signs 20-Year LNG Contract

Under the new Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA), ConocoPhillips will buy 1.0 MTPA of LNG for 20 years, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2030.

An SPA is a long-term contract between an LNG producer and buyer that establishes the framework for future gas deliveries. For producers such as Venture Global, these agreements are important because they can provide predictable demand and help underpin financing for major infrastructure projects.

The latest agreement adds ConocoPhillips to Venture Global's customer base at a time when the company is expanding its LNG production and export capacity.

Venture Global said it has more than 100 MTPA of LNG capacity in production, construction or development. Its first three projects—Calcasieu Pass, Plaquemines LNG and CP2 LNG—are located in Louisiana.

Why Venture Global Stock Reacted Positively

The immediate market reaction reflects the strategic value of another long-term offtake agreement.

Venture Global's LNG projects require substantial capital investment. Securing customers years ahead of production can reduce demand uncertainty and strengthen the commercial foundation of future capacity.

The ConocoPhillips contract represents 20 million tonnes of LNG over the full 20-year term, assuming the stated annual volume remains unchanged.

That does not mean Venture Global will receive a fixed amount of revenue every year from the contract—the financial economics depend on the pricing mechanism and other contractual terms, which were not disclosed in the companies' public announcement.

Still, adding a large, investment-grade energy company as a long-term customer can be strategically valuable.

The agreement also extends Venture Global's contracted business well into the 2040s, giving investors another indication of demand for U.S. LNG capacity over the longer term.

ConocoPhillips Is Expanding Its LNG Portfolio

The deal is equally significant from ConocoPhillips' perspective.

The U.S. oil and gas producer has been steadily expanding its LNG strategy. In August, the company said it had increased its total LNG offtake to 12 MTPA after adding 2 MTPA of additional agreements.

ConocoPhillips has also been building a diversified LNG portfolio through agreements involving projects in the United States, Qatar and other markets.

For example, the company signed a 20-year agreement in 2025 to purchase 4 MTPA from Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 and another 20-year agreement for 1 MTPA from NextDecade's Rio Grande LNG project, subject to the relevant project conditions.

The Venture Global agreement therefore fits into a broader strategy rather than representing an isolated transaction.

Why diversification matters

LNG portfolios can be exposed to project delays, geopolitical events, shipping constraints and regional price differences.

Having supply from multiple projects and geographic sources can give an energy company greater flexibility when serving customers around the world.

That diversification has become particularly relevant as disruptions have affected some major LNG projects.

Reuters reported that the Venture Global agreement comes as ConocoPhillips seeks to strengthen its LNG portfolio amid disruptions related to the Iran conflict that have affected QatarEnergy's operations and expansion plans. ConocoPhillips holds a 30% interest in QatarEnergy's Ras Laffan LNG project and stakes in other Qatari LNG expansions.

Plaquemines LNG Adds Another Near-Term Catalyst

The ConocoPhillips contract is a long-term development, but Venture Global also has a more immediate operational milestone in focus.

The company has asked U.S. federal regulators for authorization to place Phase 1 of its Plaquemines LNG facility into commercial service. Reuters reported that Venture Global cited successful commissioning operations in its filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Venture Global has said it intends to officially begin commercial operations at Plaquemines by October 31.

Plaquemines is significant because it is already producing LNG during its commissioning phase. The company has been able to benefit from elevated spot LNG prices while the facility moves toward commercial operations.

For investors, the transition from commissioning to full commercial service is important because it can change the project's financial contribution and operating profile.

Venture Global's Contracting Strategy Is Expanding

The ConocoPhillips agreement follows several other recent contracting developments.

Venture Global's second-quarter 2026 filing said the company had increased contracted 2026 cargoes to 91% of available cargoes, with a weighted-average liquefaction fee of $5.05 per million British thermal units (MMBtu). It also said its 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance had been increased to $8.7 billion-$9.1 billion, from an earlier $8.2 billion-$8.5 billion range.

The company also reported more than 2 MTPA of new or increased LNG offtake agreements during the period, including agreements involving EnBW, TotalEnergies and Vitol.

This broader contracting activity matters because Venture Global's business model depends heavily on developing large LNG facilities and monetizing their capacity through long-term agreements as well as other market opportunities.

What the Deal Means for the U.S. LNG Market

The agreement provides another example of how U.S. LNG is becoming an increasingly important source of global gas supply.

LNG allows natural gas to be cooled into a liquid form so that it can be transported by specialized ships to markets that are not connected by pipelines. This gives producers access to international customers while giving buyers greater flexibility in sourcing gas.

Long-term contracts are particularly important for new LNG infrastructure because export terminals require billions of dollars of investment.

For Venture Global, additional contracted volumes can support the commercial case for its growing project portfolio.

For ConocoPhillips, securing additional U.S. LNG gives the company another source of supply that can be integrated into its global marketing and trading activities.

Risks Investors Still Need to Consider

Despite the positive stock reaction, the agreement does not eliminate Venture Global's investment risks.

Project execution remains important. Large LNG developments can face construction delays, cost increases and commissioning challenges.

Commodity prices can also influence the broader economics of LNG projects, even when portions of a producer's business are protected by long-term contracts.

Capital requirements are another consideration. Venture Global is developing major projects that require substantial financing and infrastructure investment.

There is also regulatory and geopolitical risk. LNG exports are affected by U.S. energy policy, environmental regulations, permitting decisions and international trade conditions.

Finally, a contract signed for deliveries beginning in 2030 should not be confused with near-term earnings growth. The agreement provides long-term commercial visibility, but the financial impact will depend on when the associated LNG volumes are delivered and the applicable contract economics.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The most important near-term developments for Venture Global investors include the commercial start of Plaquemines LNG, regulatory approvals and progress on the company's broader project portfolio.

Investors should also monitor new LNG sales agreements, project financing, capital spending and changes in global LNG prices.

For ConocoPhillips, the key question will be how the additional LNG supply fits into its expanding portfolio and its broader target of building LNG offtake capacity.

The global LNG market will also remain sensitive to developments in Qatar, the Middle East, European gas demand and Asian LNG consumption.

Bottom Line

Venture Global shares jumped about 3% after the company announced a 20-year LNG supply agreement with ConocoPhillips for 1 MTPA beginning in 2030.

The deal strengthens Venture Global's long-term customer base and adds another major energy company to its LNG portfolio. For ConocoPhillips, it supports a broader strategy of diversifying and expanding LNG offtake.

The immediate stock reaction reflects the commercial significance of securing long-term demand, but investors should look beyond the headline contract. Plaquemines' transition to commercial operations, project execution, financing needs, future LNG agreements and global gas-market conditions will determine how much value the new contract ultimately creates.
