Nasdaq 100 at 31,336: Key Live Levels to Watch

Nasdaq 100 Tests 31,336 All-Time High: Key Live Levels to Watch

The Nasdaq 100 is pressing into the 31,336 area, putting the technology-heavy index at a critical technical crossroads after a strong recovery in recent sessions. The move comes as investors continue to favor large-cap technology and artificial-intelligence stocks despite sharply higher U.S. Treasury yields.

There is an important distinction in the latest market data: the cash Nasdaq-100 index closed at 31,020.93 on October 5, according to Nasdaq, while technical market coverage is identifying the 31,336 area as the key all-time-high resistance zone. Nasdaq-100 futures subsequently traded above that level, with December futures reaching 31,371 during Monday's session.

That leaves traders watching one central question: can the Nasdaq 100 turn the 31,336 area from resistance into support, or will another rejection trigger a pullback?

Why 31,336 Is the Key Nasdaq 100 Level

The 31,336 region represents a major resistance reference for the current Nasdaq 100 setup.

Technical analysis published during the latest session showed the index pressing toward the 31,281–31,336 zone, with the longer-term trend still bullish. The 5-hour chart remained well above its 200-period moving average, while the SuperTrend indicator was also below the market.

The significance of this area is simple: when an index approaches a previous record high, investors who bought earlier may take profits, while breakout traders wait for confirmation that buyers can absorb the selling pressure.

A clean break therefore matters more than simply touching the level.

Nasdaq 100's Recent Momentum

The broader trend remains strong.

The Nasdaq 100 gained 0.87% on October 5, closing at 31,076.44 according to market data from Investing.com. The index traded between 30,798.42 and 31,117.36 during that session.

Nasdaq's own historical data put the official October 5 close at 31,020.93, with an intraday high of 31,034.33. Differences between market-data providers can occur because of calculation and timing conventions, but both datasets show the index close to record territory.

The futures market showed even stronger momentum. December Nasdaq-100 futures reached 31,371, exceeding the previously cited 31,336 high, before settling at 31,317.75.

This is important because futures can trade outside regular cash-market hours. Investors should therefore avoid treating a futures high as identical to a confirmed new cash-index closing record.

The Bullish Case: A Break Above 31,336

The clearest bullish scenario is a sustained move through 31,336.

A breakout means the index moves above resistance and, ideally, remains there rather than quickly falling back below it. Strong volume and continued buying would make such a move more convincing.

If the Nasdaq 100 successfully establishes itself above the record zone, the psychological effect could also matter. Investors who were waiting for confirmation may enter after the breakout, potentially adding to momentum.

Futures already traded above 31,336, reaching 31,371, but the more important confirmation for many index traders will be whether the cash index can establish new highs rather than merely futures markets breaking the level.

Key Resistance Levels

Several levels now stand out.

31,281–31,336: Immediate resistance

Technical analysis identified 31,281.25 as a major resistance point within the broader record-high zone. The 31,336 area is the higher resistance reference highlighted by the latest market coverage.

This is the area where bulls need to demonstrate that the rally has enough strength to continue.

31,371: Recent futures high

December Nasdaq-100 futures reached 31,371 on October 5. If futures remain above the 31,336 area, 31,371 becomes an immediate reference point for traders.

Above 31,371

Beyond the latest futures high, price discovery becomes more important because there is less historical resistance above a record. In that situation, traders may increasingly use psychological levels and momentum indicators rather than previous swing highs.

Key Support Levels for the Nasdaq 100

The downside levels are equally important.

31,000–31,020

The 31,000 area is the first psychological support zone. Nasdaq's official October 5 closing value was 31,020.93, making this area particularly relevant for short-term traders.

A sustained move below 31,000 would suggest that buyers are struggling to maintain the breakout attempt.

30,500–30,700

Technical analysis has identified several structural indicators around this region. The SuperTrend was around 30,508, while the Ichimoku cloud bottom was near 30,673 in the cited 5-hour analysis.

This makes the 30,500–30,700 area a useful intermediate support zone.

Around 29,870

The 200-period moving average in the cited 5-hour analysis was around 29,867.50. As a longer-term trend indicator, a significant move toward this level would represent a much deeper deterioration than an ordinary pullback from record highs.

Momentum Is Strong, but There Is a Warning

The Nasdaq 100's trend remains bullish, but technical indicators are not giving an entirely risk-free signal.

The 5-hour analysis showed the index well above its 200-period moving average and SuperTrend, confirming that buyers remain in control. At the same time, RSI was showing bearish divergence, meaning price was moving higher while momentum was not increasing at the same pace.

Bearish divergence does not automatically mean a crash or even a major correction. It simply indicates that the rally may be losing some momentum.

That distinction is particularly important near an all-time high. A market can remain overbought or show momentum divergence for an extended period while continuing to rise.

Why Technology Stocks Are Supporting the Index

The Nasdaq 100's strength is closely tied to the performance of its largest technology companies.

The broader Nasdaq Composite reached a record close on October 5, with Nvidia rising 2.1% and reaching a market capitalization of about $5.76 trillion. Microsoft, Meta and Tesla also contributed to the technology-led rally.

Investors are also looking ahead to corporate earnings, with enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence remaining an important driver of technology valuations.

For the Nasdaq 100, this creates a potentially powerful combination: strong earnings expectations and continued AI investment can support the largest technology companies, which have an outsized influence on the index.

Higher Bond Yields Are the Major Risk

The biggest macroeconomic challenge is coming from the bond market.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed to around 5.31% on October 5, its highest level since 2002 according to AP and other market reports. The 30-year yield also reached a multi-decade high.

Normally, higher bond yields can put pressure on growth and technology stocks because future corporate earnings become less valuable when discounted at higher rates.

Yet technology stocks have remained resilient.

One reason is that weaker U.S. employment data reduced expectations of an October Federal Reserve rate hike. Reuters reported that market expectations for an October hike dropped sharply to roughly 24% from around 70% previously.

This creates a complicated setup: lower expectations for an immediate rate hike are supporting stocks, while rising long-term Treasury yields are creating valuation pressure.

Could the Nasdaq 100 Break Out or Form a Bull Trap?

The current chart offers two very different possibilities.

A bullish breakout would involve the index clearing 31,336 and holding above the area, preferably with stronger participation. That could confirm a new leg higher.

A false breakout would occur if the index briefly pushes above resistance but then falls back below it. Technical analysts have warned that thinning volume and momentum divergence could increase the risk of such a move.

If the breakout fails, the first areas to monitor would be around 31,000 and then 30,500–30,700.

This is why traders should focus on confirmation rather than simply chasing a new high.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The most important Nasdaq 100 levels are currently:

  • 31,336: major record-high resistance reference

  • 31,371: recent December futures high

  • 31,000–31,020: immediate psychological and closing support

  • 30,500–30,700: important technical support zone

  • 29,870: longer-term 200-period moving-average area

Beyond the chart, investors should monitor U.S. technology earnings, Nvidia and other megacap performance, Treasury yields, Federal Reserve expectations and developments in AI spending.

The breadth of the rally also deserves attention. A strong index driven by only a handful of mega-cap stocks can remain powerful, but it can also become more vulnerable if those leaders lose momentum.

Bottom Line

The Nasdaq 100 is testing a critical record-high zone around 31,336, with futures already moving above that level while the cash index remains close to its record territory.

The bullish trend remains intact, supported by strong technology stocks and optimism around AI and upcoming earnings. However, rising Treasury yields and signs of momentum divergence mean the breakout should not be treated as guaranteed.

For traders, 31,336 is the level to watch most closely. A sustained cash-index breakout could strengthen the bullish setup, while a rejection followed by a move below 31,000 would increase the importance of lower support around 30,500–30,700.
