Hang Seng Tests 24,365 Resistance Amid Bearish Trend

Hang Seng Tests 24,365 Resistance: Can the Index Break Its Bearish Trend?

The Hang Seng Index is testing the 24,365 area on October 6, 2026, putting a closely watched technical resistance level back in focus. The index opened at 24,249 and was recently trading around 24,200, up roughly 0.7% from Monday's 24,040.34 close, after reaching an intraday high of 24,368.

The rebound comes after a sharp decline in the previous sessions, when the Hang Seng had entered oversold territory. But despite the recovery, the broader technical structure remains mixed to bearish on important timeframes.

For traders and investors, the key question is whether the index can decisively clear 24,365 or whether the level again attracts sellers.

Why 24,365 Matters for the Hang Seng

The 24,365 level is not simply an arbitrary round number.

On the five-hour chart, the SuperTrend indicator places resistance around 24,365, while the index had previously been trading below its short-, medium- and long-term moving averages. The technical setup therefore treats the area as an important test for any attempted recovery.

SuperTrend is a trend-following indicator that uses price and volatility to identify potential support or resistance. When the indicator remains above the market price, it generally signals that the prevailing trend is still bearish.

That makes a sustained move above 24,365 more important than a brief intraday move through the level.

The Hang Seng reached 24,368 during Tuesday's session, meaning it has already marginally crossed the resistance zone intraday. The next test is whether buyers can hold those gains rather than allowing the index to fall back below the level.

The Index Is Recovering From an Oversold Setup

The current rebound follows a much weaker technical picture seen on October 5.

At one point, the Hang Seng was around 23,876, with its five-hour RSI at 27.96. An RSI below 30 is commonly considered oversold, meaning prices have fallen rapidly enough that a short-term rebound becomes possible. At that stage, the index was also near the lower Bollinger Band.

However, oversold does not automatically mean bullish.

An index can remain oversold while continuing to decline. That is why technical traders generally look for confirmation from price action, moving averages and momentum indicators rather than treating RSI alone as a reversal signal.

The latest rebound therefore looks more like a test of the previous breakdown than definitive evidence that the broader downtrend has ended.

Moving Averages Still Send a Cautious Signal

The current technical picture is mixed.

As of the latest available five-hour technical data, the Hang Seng was trading above its 5-, 10- and 20-period moving averages, which indicates improving short-term momentum. But the index remained below its 50-, 100- and 200-period moving averages.

That distinction is important.

Short-term moving averages respond quickly to price changes, so they can turn positive during a rebound. Longer-term averages change more slowly and are often used to assess the underlying trend.

In simple terms, the market has improved over the very short term, but it has not yet repaired the larger technical damage.

The five-hour technical summary was neutral, while several indicators were positive. At the same time, MACD remained on a sell signal and the stochastic indicators were in overbought territory.

That combination suggests that the rebound has gained momentum but may also be vulnerable to profit-taking if buyers cannot push through resistance.

What Happens Above 24,365?

A sustained break above 24,365 would improve the short-term technical picture.

The next resistance areas from current pivot calculations include roughly 24,438 and 24,507, depending on the methodology used. The Fibonacci-based second resistance is around 24,364, reinforcing the importance of the 24,365 area.

A convincing move above the resistance zone, particularly if accompanied by stronger breadth and volume, would give bulls a stronger argument that the recent decline is losing momentum.

But investors should distinguish between an intraday breakout and a confirmed trend reversal.

Tuesday's high of 24,368 has already moved marginally above the 24,365 level. What matters now is whether the index can remain above it and build support there.

What If the Resistance Holds?

A rejection around 24,365 would keep the bearish case alive.

The first important support region is around 24,100–24,200, based on current pivot and moving-average levels. Below that, the previous recovery area around 23,734 becomes more significant. That was identified as immediate support during the October 5 sell-off.

A failure to hold the rebound could therefore return attention to the 23,734 area.

If that support also breaks, the market could again face stronger selling pressure. However, the exact direction cannot be determined from one technical level alone.

For longer-term investors, the bigger question remains whether Hong Kong equities can establish a higher low and then a higher high. Those are basic characteristics of a developing uptrend.

AI Stocks Are Providing Some Support

The Hang Seng's recovery is also being helped by strength in technology and artificial-intelligence-related stocks.

Hong Kong shares rose modestly on Monday, with the Hang Seng and Hang Seng China Enterprises Index both gaining 0.3%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index rose 0.6%. AI supply-chain and chip-related stocks were among the stronger performers.

Lenovo Group and Hua Hong Grace Semiconductor each gained more than 4%, while PCB manufacturer Kingboard Laminates surged 12%.

This matters because technology stocks carry significant weight in Hong Kong's market and have become an important source of investor interest.

The recent strength in AI-related equities has therefore helped offset weakness in more rate-sensitive sectors.

Property and Financial Stocks Remain a Weak Spot

The recovery is not broad-based across every part of the Hong Kong market.

Reuters reported that Hong Kong property shares fell 0.7% on Monday, while a financial-sector subindex tracking major banks and insurers also slipped.

This divergence is important for assessing the quality of the rebound.

A rally led primarily by technology stocks can lift the headline index, but a more durable market recovery would ideally involve broader participation across financials, property, consumer and industrial companies.

The property sector remains particularly important because China's real-estate weakness has been one of the major structural concerns for Hong Kong and mainland-linked equities.

China Holidays Add Another Market Variable

Mainland China's financial markets are closed from October 1 through October 7 for the National Day holiday and are scheduled to resume trading on October 8.

That means Hong Kong stocks are currently trading without the usual mainland-market backdrop.

When mainland markets reopen, investors will have fresh information to process, including holiday consumption and travel data.

Reuters reported that early Golden Week activity appeared underwhelming according to Citi analysts, with retail and tourism spending likely softer per traveller despite steady footfall.

That could matter for Hong Kong-listed consumer and discretionary stocks if the market interprets the holiday data as evidence of weak domestic demand.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The 24,365 resistance level is the immediate technical focal point.

Investors and traders should watch:

  • Whether the Hang Seng can sustain a move above 24,365

  • Whether trading volume increases during a breakout

  • The index's behavior around 24,100–24,200

  • Whether 23,734 remains a reliable support level

  • Performance of Hang Seng technology stocks

  • Property and financial-sector participation

  • Mainland Chinese markets when trading resumes on October 8

  • Global bond yields and risk appetite

A breakout accompanied by broader market participation would be more meaningful than a temporary move above resistance.

Conversely, a sharp rejection could signal that the recent rebound was mainly a technical recovery following oversold conditions.

Bottom Line

The Hang Seng is testing the 24,365 resistance area after rebounding from an oversold condition, with the index recently around 24,200 and an intraday high of 24,368 on October 6.

The technical picture has improved in the short term, but longer-term moving averages and the five-hour SuperTrend setup still leave the broader trend vulnerable. The market therefore faces an important test: a sustained break above 24,365 could strengthen the recovery case, while rejection could send attention back toward lower support levels.

For investors, the key takeaway is not simply whether the index touches 24,365. The more important signal will be whether it holds above the level and turns previous resistance into support.
