Dollar Index at 101.49: Bearish Divergence & Levels

Dollar Index Stalls at 101.49 With Bearish Divergence: Live Levels

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) stalled around 101.49 on October 2, 2026, after a powerful September rally pushed the index to its highest levels in roughly 18 months. The pause comes as technical indicators begin to show signs of exhaustion, even though the broader dollar trend remains bullish.

The key question for traders now is whether the dollar can break decisively above the 101.48–101.55 resistance zone or whether bearish divergence will trigger a pullback toward nearby support levels. Technical analysis from Windsor Brokers identifies 101.48–101.55 as an important resistance area, while Reuters has also noted that the dollar's recent rally is showing potential signs of losing momentum.

At the time of the Investing.com technical update, the Dollar Index was around 101.49. Later market data showed the index moving higher and subsequently pulling back as U.S. employment data altered expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

Why is the Dollar Index stalling near 101.49?

The immediate issue is resistance.

The Dollar Index had climbed sharply from its September lows, gaining roughly 2.8% from the recent low by late September and moving above its 100-week moving average. That recovery changed the technical picture from a prolonged decline to a much stronger short-term uptrend.

But the rally is now approaching an important historical resistance zone.

Technical analysis from Windsor Brokers places resistance at 101.48–101.55, corresponding to previous highs from June and July. A sustained break above that area would strengthen the case that the dollar's larger recovery is continuing. A failure to clear it, particularly if accompanied by weakening momentum, would increase the probability of a correction.

This is why the 101.49 level has attracted so much attention.

What does bearish divergence mean for DXY?

A bearish divergence occurs when the price of an asset continues to make higher highs while a momentum indicator fails to make corresponding highs.

It does not automatically mean that prices must fall. Instead, it can indicate that the underlying buying momentum is weakening.

In the Dollar Index's case, technical analysts have identified weakening momentum and bearish signals after the strong September advance. Reuters reported that the index formed a bearish engulfing pattern followed by a bearish harami pattern, both of which can signal a loss of momentum.

Windsor Brokers also pointed to overbought conditions and bearish divergence in the stochastic indicator while highlighting the 101.48–101.55 resistance band.

For traders, that creates two competing signals: the underlying trend remains constructive, but momentum is becoming less convincing.

Key Dollar Index support and resistance levels

The important technical levels are relatively clear.

Resistance: 101.48–101.55

This is the immediate barrier. The index already moved through the zone during its recent advance, but maintaining levels above it would be more significant than a brief intraday break.

A firm move above 101.55 could shift attention toward 101.80, followed by the psychologically important 102.00 level. Windsor Brokers identifies 101.80 and 102.67 as subsequent upside reference points.

Support: 101.18

The first nearby support is around 101.18. A move below this level would indicate that the index is losing some of its immediate upward momentum.

Support: 100.95

The 100.95 area is particularly important because it corresponds to a broken Fibonacci retracement level. Technical analysis suggests that holding this area would help preserve the broader bullish structure.

Support: 100.75–100.48

A deeper correction could bring the Dollar Index toward 100.75 and 100.48. A sustained break below these levels would make the recent rally look increasingly vulnerable.

Reuters previously identified the 100-week moving average around 100.7 as another important technical reference. A decisive move below that area could expose the September 9 low near 98.60.

Why U.S. jobs data matters for the dollar

The technical setup is being tested by a major fundamental catalyst: U.S. employment data.

The September jobs report showed only 29,000 new jobs, significantly below expectations. The unemployment rate also moved higher to 4.2%. The weak data reduced expectations for an October Federal Reserve rate hike and pressured Treasury yields and the dollar.

The Dollar Index subsequently fell to an intraday low around 101.714, according to The Wall Street Journal.

That reaction illustrates why the technical levels matter. If weaker economic data continues to reduce expectations for additional Fed tightening, the dollar could face pressure even after its strong September performance.

On the other hand, persistent inflation, elevated oil prices and geopolitical risks could continue supporting the dollar through higher yields and safe-haven demand.

The Fed remains the biggest fundamental driver

Interest-rate expectations remain central to the dollar outlook.

A higher U.S. policy-rate path generally supports the dollar because it can increase the relative return available on dollar-denominated assets. Expectations of fewer rate increases can have the opposite effect.

Reuters reported on October 2 that the dollar's recent rally had been supported by the Federal Reserve's September rate hike and rising Treasury yields. However, the weaker employment report reduced expectations for an October move.

That creates a complicated setup for DXY.

The dollar has benefited from higher yields and stronger rate expectations, but a weakening U.S. labor market could eventually force markets to reassess how long those conditions can persist.

Why the euro matters so much for DXY

The Dollar Index is not simply a measure of the U.S. currency against one other currency.

The euro carries the largest weighting in the index, at roughly 58%, so large moves in EUR/USD can have a substantial effect on DXY.

The euro has recently weakened amid concerns surrounding France's fiscal position and European bond markets. Reuters reported that the euro was heading toward its largest weekly decline in four months, while the dollar was on track for a third consecutive weekly gain.

This means DXY's next major move will depend partly on whether European political and fiscal concerns continue to weaken the euro.

If the euro stabilizes, it could make it harder for the Dollar Index to extend its rally. Continued euro weakness could provide additional support to DXY.

What the dollar's move means for Indian investors

The Dollar Index is also relevant to Indian markets because movements in the U.S. dollar can influence the rupee, crude oil, gold and foreign portfolio flows.

A stronger dollar can place pressure on emerging-market currencies, including the Indian rupee, particularly when U.S. Treasury yields are also elevated.

That matters for India because the country imports a large amount of crude oil. A weaker rupee combined with expensive crude can increase the domestic cost of energy imports and potentially add to inflationary pressure.

The relationship is not one-directional, however. A weaker dollar can support emerging-market currencies and commodities priced in dollars, while changes in global risk appetite and oil prices can independently affect the rupee.

Indian investors should therefore treat DXY as one input into the broader global-market picture rather than a standalone indicator.

Gold and commodities could also react

The dollar's direction is closely watched by commodity investors.

Gold prices often respond inversely to the dollar because a weaker greenback can make dollar-denominated gold relatively cheaper for international buyers. On October 2, gold gained after the softer U.S. jobs report weakened expectations for near-term Fed tightening.

Other commodities can also be affected by currency movements, although supply, demand and geopolitical developments often have a much larger influence.

For Indian investors, this relationship is particularly relevant when evaluating gold ETFs, international commodity exposure and companies sensitive to imported raw materials.

What investors should watch next

The next move in the Dollar Index will likely depend on whether price confirms or rejects the current technical setup.

Bullish scenario: A sustained break above 101.48–101.55 would strengthen the technical case for a move toward 101.80 and 102.00, with 102.67 a higher reference level from technical analysis.

Correction scenario: Failure to clear resistance, followed by a move below 101.18 and 100.95, would increase the risk of a deeper retracement toward 100.75–100.48.

Fundamental trigger: Future U.S. inflation, employment and Federal Reserve communications will remain critical because they can quickly change Treasury-yield and rate expectations.

The important point is that bearish divergence is a warning signal, not a confirmed reversal.

Conclusion

The Dollar Index's pause around 101.49 reflects a clash between a strong underlying rally and signs of weakening momentum. The 101.48–101.55 area has become the key technical battleground, while 101.18 and 100.95 provide important downside reference points.

The fundamental backdrop has also become more complicated. The dollar recently benefited from higher Treasury yields, inflation concerns and expectations for further Fed tightening, but weak September employment data has reduced the likelihood of an immediate October rate hike.

For traders and investors, the key signal now is confirmation: a sustained breakout above resistance would strengthen the bullish structure, while a break below major support would make the bearish divergence more meaningful.
