US Stock Market Today: Dow Edges Higher as Nasdaq Falls 1.25%

Wall Street ended Thursday, October 8, 2026, with a sharply divided performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.10%, but the S&P 500 dropped 0.47% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.25% as technology and semiconductor shares came under pressure. Rising oil prices, inflation concerns and fresh doubts about artificial intelligence (AI) investment returns kept investors cautious.

The session offered a reminder that a positive headline for one index does not necessarily mean the broader US stock market is healthy. While some traditional blue-chip and energy-related shares helped the Dow finish in positive territory, losses among major technology companies weighed heavily on the Nasdaq.

For investors in the US market, including those in India who hold international funds or overseas stocks, the main issues to watch are oil-price movements, bond yields, AI-sector valuations and the upcoming corporate earnings season.

US Stock Market Closing Numbers on October 8

The three major US indexes finished the session as follows:

IndexClosing levelDaily change
Dow Jones Industrial Average51,231.64+0.10%
S&P 5007,765.36-0.47%
Nasdaq Composite27,193.34-1.25%

The Dow gained 51.77 points, while the S&P 500 lost 36.41 points and the Nasdaq shed 345.35 points. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks smaller US companies, was nearly unchanged, rising less than 0.1%.

The Nasdaq's larger decline reflected the pressure on technology and semiconductor stocks. These companies often carry higher growth expectations in their valuations, making their shares particularly sensitive to changes in interest-rate expectations and doubts about future earnings.

Why the Nasdaq Fell While the Dow Rose

1. Semiconductor stocks led the technology sell-off

Chipmakers were among the weakest performers. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.4%, while Micron Technology dropped 4.8%. Broadcom lost 4.4% and Oracle declined 5.5%.

One catalyst was a Financial Times report suggesting OpenAI's annualised revenue was around $20 billion below a figure the company had previously indicated. The report raised questions about the pace at which AI demand could translate into revenue for major technology businesses and their suppliers. The revenue figure was reported by the newspaper; it should not be treated as an independently confirmed financial result in this article.

Investors have poured substantial capital into AI infrastructure, including advanced chips, cloud computing capacity and data centres. If AI-related revenue grows more slowly than expected, investors may reassess the valuations of companies that supply this infrastructure.

There is an important distinction, however: a fall in share prices does not prove that AI demand is disappearing. The immediate concern is whether expected growth and potential profits justify the prices investors are paying.

2. Oil prices added to inflation concerns

Crude oil rose sharply as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns about supply disruptions unsettled energy markets. Attacks on shipping around the Strait of Hormuz, combined with lower US output linked to hurricane activity, contributed to the move. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude settled 3.6% higher, while Brent crude gained 4.1%.

Higher oil prices can raise transport, manufacturing and energy costs. If businesses pass those costs on to consumers, inflation may remain elevated for longer. That can complicate the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decisions.

For equities, the risk is twofold: companies may face higher operating expenses, while investors may demand better returns to compensate for a higher-interest-rate environment. Growth stocks can be especially vulnerable when that combination puts pressure on valuations.

3. Interest-rate expectations remained uncertain

Federal Reserve officials have continued to warn that inflation risks could require further policy tightening. Reuters reported that financial markets were pricing in the possibility of another rate increase in December, although expectations can change quickly as new economic data arrive.

Higher interest rates generally increase borrowing costs and reduce the present value of future earnings. That can weigh on companies whose valuations depend heavily on profits expected many years from now.

The bond market was volatile during Thursday's session, with yields rising earlier before retreating. The late reversal helped stabilise parts of the market, but it did not erase the pressure on technology shares.

Which Stocks Moved Against the Trend?

Not every stock declined. Home Depot gained 3.39%, making it one of the strongest performers in the Dow. Chevron advanced 3.12% as the energy sector benefited from the oil-price move. Palantir Technologies rose 2.4% after Goldman Sachs upgraded the data analytics company to “buy” from “neutral.”

PepsiCo climbed 3.7% after announcing additional cost-cutting plans, even as it lowered its annual core profit forecast. Chipotle Mexican Grill rose 6.2% amid reports of potential acquisition interest from Starbucks, whose shares slipped 0.4%. The reports did not establish that a deal would occur.

These individual moves show why index performance can hide substantial differences between industries and companies. A stock may rise on company-specific news even when its sector or the broader market is under pressure.

What the Market Close Means for Investors

The mixed finish does not, by itself, establish that a sustained market downturn has begun. The S&P 500 recorded its second consecutive daily decline after recently reaching a record high, while the Nasdaq's sharper loss highlighted the market's sensitivity to technology-sector expectations.

Investors should avoid interpreting one session as a reliable forecast. Instead, several developments deserve attention over the coming days.

Oil and geopolitical developments: Any further disruption to energy supplies could keep crude prices elevated and complicate the inflation outlook.

Bond yields and Federal Reserve signals: Changes in Treasury yields can quickly alter valuations, especially for growth-oriented companies.

Third-quarter earnings: The upcoming reporting season will test whether corporate results support current valuations. Investors will be looking for evidence of revenue growth, sustainable margins and credible returns on AI investment.

Market breadth: The number of stocks advancing or declining can help reveal whether weakness is concentrated in a few heavyweight companies or spreading across the market. Reuters reported that declining shares outnumbered advancing shares on both the NYSE and Nasdaq on Thursday.

For Indian investors with exposure to US equities, global funds or technology-focused investments, the same factors matter. Currency movements, fund structure, fees and individual portfolio concentration can also affect returns measured in rupees.

Conclusion

The US stock market closed mixed on October 8, with the Dow up 0.10%, the S&P 500 down 0.47% and the Nasdaq falling 1.25%. Technology-sector weakness, oil-driven inflation worries and uncertainty about AI investment returns shaped the session.

The key takeaway is not simply that the Nasdaq fell. It is that investors are becoming more selective about growth expectations while monitoring energy prices and interest rates. The next earnings reports, changes in Treasury yields and developments in the Middle East will help determine whether Thursday's technology sell-off remains limited or broadens further.
