Topps Tiles Full-Year Profit In Line With Views as Sales Fall 1.3%
UK tile specialist Topps Tiles expects its full-year adjusted pretax profit to be broadly in line with market expectations despite a 1.3% decline in group revenue, as weak housing and home-improvement demand continued to weigh on trading.
The company said group revenue, including its commercial tile business CTD, fell to around £292 million in the 52 weeks to September 26, 2026. The decline was mainly linked to store closures across both CTD and Topps Tiles. However, revenue excluding CTD increased about 0.7% to £267 million.
Topps Tiles also said its adjusted pretax profit is expected to be around £6.6 million, within the latest analyst consensus range of £6.5 million to £6.7 million.
Sales Decline Reflects a Difficult Housing Market
The 1.3% decline in group sales highlights the challenging environment facing UK home-improvement retailers.
Topps Tiles said like-for-like sales at its core Topps Tiles business were broadly flat, declining just 0.1% for the financial year. Trading was particularly affected during the fourth quarter by periods of extreme heat, which disrupted activity among housebuilders and tradespeople. The company said sales improved in September.
This matters because demand for tiles is closely connected to housing activity, construction and renovation spending. When consumers delay home improvements or builders slow projects, retailers supplying these markets can experience weaker volumes.
The wider market also remained under pressure. Topps Tiles said it continued to outperform the broader home-improvement market, which declined approximately 1.7% during the financial year, based on the Barclays UK Consumer Spend Report covering October 2025 to August 2026.
Profit Holds Up Despite Revenue Pressure
The most important part of the update for investors is that Topps Tiles still expects adjusted pretax profit of approximately £6.6 million.
That compares with the company's latest consensus range of £6.5 million to £6.7 million, meaning the expected result remains broadly aligned with market expectations.
The result reflects the impact of the company's cost-saving and restructuring efforts. Topps Tiles has been working on store-network optimisation, changes to its staffing model and a restructuring of head-office roles.
These initiatives are particularly important when sales growth is limited. Cost control can help protect profitability even when revenue is under pressure.
The company said it had completed its cost-cutting and store-optimisation programme during the year, while the integration of Fired Earth, which it acquired, also contributed to profit.
Pro Tiler Tools Provides a Strong Growth Area
One of the brighter parts of the business was Pro Tiler Tools.
Revenue at the business increased 18.2% to a record £42 million, providing a significant source of growth within the wider group.
The performance is important because Topps Group has been expanding beyond its traditional tile-store model and developing its trade-focused operations.
Trade customers can provide a different demand profile from individual consumers, potentially giving the group more exposure to professional contractors and ongoing construction activity.
The company said group trade revenue, including CTD, nevertheless fell around 1.4% for the year, with extreme heat temporarily disrupting activity among housebuilders and tradespeople in the fourth quarter.
Online Sales Continue to Gain Importance
Digital sales are becoming a larger part of Topps Tiles' business.
Online sales represented 25.6% of group revenue in the fourth quarter and 22.7% for the full financial year, an increase of 3.7 percentage points from the previous year.
For a traditional retail business, higher online penetration can potentially improve customer reach and complement its physical-store network.
However, online growth does not automatically translate into higher profits. Investors will need to monitor the margin generated from digital sales, fulfilment costs and whether online growth is incremental or simply shifts purchases away from stores.
Topps Tiles' broader strategy has increasingly included digital expansion alongside trade growth and category development.
New Product Categories Add Another Growth Avenue
Topps Tiles is also expanding beyond traditional tile products.
Revenue from newer hard-surface product categories increased 9.1%, supported by demand for acoustic panels, outdoor tiles and shower panels. The group also launched a luxury vinyl tile range during the fourth quarter.
Category expansion can help the company increase the amount customers spend on individual projects while reducing reliance on traditional tile sales.
For investors, the important question is whether these newer categories can maintain growth without creating excessive inventory or promotional pressure.
CTD Store Network Has Been Reduced
The group's CTD commercial tile business is another major factor behind the headline revenue decline.
CTD was operating from 23 stores at the end of the financial year, compared with 31 a year earlier. The reduction followed property-related decisions and the disposal of four stores required by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority.
This means the reported decline in group revenue needs to be viewed in the context of a smaller store network.
The underlying performance of continuing operations is therefore more relevant than simply comparing total group sales with the previous year.
Revenue excluding CTD increased around 0.7%, while Topps Tiles' core like-for-like sales were broadly stable.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The next phase of the Topps Tiles story will depend heavily on the UK housing and home-improvement market.
Several factors deserve attention:
Housing activity: A sustained recovery in housebuilding and renovation could support demand for tiles and related products.
Consumer confidence: Topps Tiles remains exposed to household spending, making consumer confidence an important demand indicator.
Margins: With revenue under pressure, maintaining gross margins and controlling operating expenses will be important for protecting profit.
Trade growth: Performance among professional customers and businesses such as Pro Tiler Tools could increasingly influence group growth.
Digital sales: Continued growth in online penetration will be important, but investors should also examine whether digital revenue delivers attractive margins.
Store optimisation: With CTD's network already reduced and further efficiency measures implemented, the group will need to demonstrate that a leaner operating structure can support profitability.
Topps Tiles Outlook
The latest trading update suggests that Topps Tiles is navigating a difficult market while relying on internal cost savings, digital expansion and trade-focused growth to support earnings.
The company previously reported strong improvement in FY25, when adjusted profit before tax rose 46% to £9.2 million, while adjusted revenue increased 6.8% to £265.4 million.
The subsequent slowdown in FY26 highlights how dependent the business remains on the broader home-improvement cycle.
At the same time, the expected £6.6 million adjusted pretax profit indicates that the company remains within its latest market expectations despite the weaker sales environment.
The upcoming full-year results will therefore be important for understanding how much of the profit performance came from sustainable cost improvements and how much could change if consumer and housing demand recover.
Conclusion
Topps Tiles expects full-year adjusted pretax profit of about £6.6 million, broadly in line with market expectations, even as group revenue declined 1.3% to around £292 million.
The headline sales decline reflects store closures, weak home-improvement demand and disruption from extreme heat, while Pro Tiler Tools, online sales and newer product categories provided areas of growth.
For investors, the key indicators to watch are the recovery in housing and renovation demand, profit margins, trade sales, digital growth and the benefits from Topps Tiles' cost-reduction programme.
