ConocoPhillips Signs 20-Year LNG Deal With Venture Global
ConocoPhillips has signed a 20-year LNG supply agreement with Venture Global, securing 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefied natural gas starting in 2030. The agreement strengthens ConocoPhillips’ growing LNG portfolio while giving Venture Global another long-term customer for its U.S. LNG production.
The deal is part of a broader push by energy companies to secure long-duration LNG supplies as geopolitical disruptions and changing global gas demand reshape international energy markets.
For investors, the agreement is less about an immediate earnings impact and more about how ConocoPhillips is building its LNG business over the next decade, while Venture Global continues to expand its export capacity.
What the ConocoPhillips-Venture Global LNG Deal Includes
Under the new sales and purchase agreement, ConocoPhillips will purchase 1 MTPA of LNG from Venture Global for 20 years, with deliveries beginning in 2030. If the contracted annual volume remains unchanged throughout the term, the agreement represents 20 million tonnes of LNG purchases over two decades. The companies have not disclosed the total value of the contract.
Venture Global said it currently has more than 100 MTPA of LNG capacity in production, construction or development. Its major projects include Calcasieu Pass, Plaquemines LNG and CP2 LNG, all located in Louisiana.
For ConocoPhillips, the agreement adds another long-term source of LNG to a portfolio that has been expanding rapidly.
The company reported in August that its total LNG offtake had reached 12 MTPA, following the addition of 2 MTPA through new agreements in Indonesia and the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Why ConocoPhillips Is Expanding Its LNG Portfolio
ConocoPhillips has increasingly positioned LNG as an important part of its broader global gas strategy.
The company's approach is designed to connect its natural-gas resources with international markets where LNG can command higher prices than domestic gas. Management has described the strategy as a way to move lower-value natural gas into premium-priced international markets while maintaining control across parts of the value chain.
The Venture Global agreement fits that strategy because it provides ConocoPhillips with additional contracted LNG supply beginning later this decade.
The timing is also notable. Global LNG markets have faced significant geopolitical uncertainty in 2026, including disruptions affecting Middle Eastern supply. Reuters reported that challenges surrounding QatarEnergy's operations and expansion projects have encouraged ConocoPhillips to strengthen its LNG portfolio.
Long-term contracts can help buyers reduce exposure to spot-market volatility. For a producer such as ConocoPhillips, they can also provide greater visibility over future LNG volumes and commercial activity.
What the Deal Means for Venture Global
For Venture Global, securing ConocoPhillips as a long-term customer adds another major energy company to its LNG portfolio.
Long-term sales agreements are important for large LNG projects because they can provide visibility into future demand and support project financing and development decisions.
Venture Global has been building its commercial position through a mixture of long-term and shorter-duration agreements. In May, the company announced agreements with TotalEnergies and Vitol covering more than 1 MTPA combined for five years.
The company is also moving closer to commercial operations at its Plaquemines LNG facility. On October 1, Venture Global asked U.S. federal regulators to authorize Phase 1 of the Louisiana facility to enter service after successful commissioning.
That development is important because Plaquemines is expected to become a major contributor to Venture Global's export volumes.
LNG Demand and Global Energy Security
The new contract comes against a backdrop of strong interest in LNG as countries seek to diversify energy supplies.
U.S. LNG exports reached 10.9 million tonnes in September 2026, up from 10.7 million tonnes in August, according to preliminary LSEG data reported by Reuters. Europe accounted for approximately 54% of U.S. LNG exports during the month as buyers sought to replenish inventories ahead of winter.
That does not mean LNG demand will rise continuously. Prices, weather, storage levels, new export capacity and competition from pipeline gas can all change the market balance.
But the recent export figures demonstrate how U.S. LNG has become an important source of supply for international buyers.
For ConocoPhillips, expanding its contracted LNG position gives the company greater exposure to that market without relying entirely on short-term spot transactions.
What It Could Mean for ConocoPhillips Stock
The agreement is unlikely to transform ConocoPhillips stock earnings immediately because deliveries under the new contract do not begin until 2030.
The more important investor takeaway is the company's longer-term portfolio positioning.
ConocoPhillips generated $7.2 billion in cash from operations during the second quarter of 2026 and ended the period with $8.1 billion in cash and short-term investments. It also returned $3 billion to shareholders during the quarter through dividends and share repurchases.
That financial capacity gives the company room to pursue longer-term growth opportunities while continuing its capital-return program.
ConocoPhillips has also said it remains on track for a $7 billion free-cash-flow inflection by 2029, highlighting its expectation that its portfolio will generate stronger cash generation over time.
The LNG expansion therefore needs to be viewed alongside the company's broader capital-allocation strategy rather than as a standalone earnings catalyst.
Risks Investors Should Consider
There are several risks around the long-term LNG strategy.
Commodity prices: LNG economics remain exposed to global natural-gas prices and regional spreads. Long-term contracts can reduce some uncertainty but do not eliminate commodity-market risks.
Project execution: Venture Global must continue bringing its LNG projects into commercial operation on schedule and within expected costs.
Geopolitical changes: The current focus on energy security has increased interest in long-term LNG contracts, but geopolitical conditions can change rapidly.
Demand uncertainty: New LNG supply is expected to enter the global market over the coming years. If supply grows faster than demand, prices and project economics could come under pressure.
Long lead time: ConocoPhillips will not begin receiving LNG under this specific agreement until 2030. That makes the contract strategically important but not an immediate earnings driver.
What Investors Should Watch Next
For COP investors, the key indicators will include the pace at which ConocoPhillips expands its LNG offtake portfolio, the profitability of those contracts and the company's ability to maintain capital returns while investing in future growth.
For Venture Global investors, attention will remain on Plaquemines LNG's transition into commercial operations, the development of CP2 and the company's ability to secure additional customers and execute its large project pipeline.
Global LNG prices, European and Asian demand, U.S. export volumes and geopolitical developments will also remain important for the sector.
Bottom Line
The ConocoPhillips-Venture Global LNG deal gives ConocoPhillips 1 MTPA of LNG supply for 20 years beginning in 2030 and further expands its position in the global LNG market.
The agreement is strategically significant rather than an immediate earnings catalyst. It strengthens ConocoPhillips' long-term LNG portfolio while providing Venture Global with another major customer as it expands U.S. export capacity.
The next milestones to watch are Venture Global's Plaquemines LNG commercial start-up, future LNG contracts and ConocoPhillips' ability to convert its growing LNG portfolio into attractive long-term cash generation.
