Why Is Megaport Stock Surging Today? MP1 Jumps on AI Contracts and FY27 Upgrade
Megaport stock (ASX: MP1) is surging today after the Australian cloud-connectivity company announced almost A$1 billion in new artificial intelligence infrastructure contracts and raised its fiscal 2027 revenue and profitability guidance.
Megaport shares rose as much as 20.5% on September 29, reaching their highest level since mid-August and making the stock one of the strongest performers on the ASX 200, which was slightly lower at the time. Investing.com later reported the shares up 13.9% at A$21.46.
The immediate catalyst is clear: investors are reassessing Megaport's growth prospects as the company moves beyond traditional network connectivity and deeper into AI compute, networking and storage infrastructure.
The Main Catalyst: A$978.6 Million of New AI Deals
Megaport's wholly owned Latitude.sh subsidiary has signed three new AI infrastructure contracts worth a combined A$978.6 million.
The agreements involve GPU and CPU compute, networking and storage for AI applications and inference workloads. The customers were not disclosed, but the contracts include two new customer relationships and one expansion of an existing relationship. The agreements are expected to contribute about A$232.4 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR).
ARR is a useful metric for a recurring-revenue business because it estimates the revenue the company would generate over a 12-month period from its recurring services at a given point in time.
For Megaport, the size of these contracts matters because they provide substantially greater visibility into future revenue than purely usage-based or short-term technology demand.
The latest deals follow four similar AI infrastructure contracts worth A$458.9 million announced earlier in June, highlighting how rapidly Megaport's AI-infrastructure pipeline has expanded this year.
FY27 Guidance Has Been Raised Sharply
The second major reason Megaport shares are rising is a significant upgrade to the company's fiscal 2027 outlook.
Megaport now expects full-year group revenue of A$720 million to A$810 million, compared with its previous forecast of A$620 million to A$730 million. At the same time, the company raised its expected EBITDA margin to 42%–44%, from its earlier forecast of 38%–40%.
EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, is commonly used to assess operating performance before financing and some accounting effects.
The guidance change is particularly important because it combines higher revenue expectations with stronger margins. In other words, management is not simply expecting more sales; it is also projecting that a larger percentage of those sales will translate into operating earnings.
That combination can have a powerful effect on how growth stocks are valued.
Megaport Is Becoming an AI Infrastructure Company
For years, Megaport's core business has been providing automated network connectivity between businesses, cloud providers and data centres.
Its own investor materials show the company now connects more than 1,200 data centres, supports more than 37,000 services and serves more than 4,000 customers across more than 185 cities and 31 countries. As of June 30, 2026, group ARR stood above A$395.2 million.
The strategic shift accelerated after Megaport completed its acquisition of Latitude.sh in November 2025.
Latitude.sh added high-performance CPU and GPU infrastructure to Megaport's network platform. That allows customers to obtain compute, storage and connectivity through a more integrated infrastructure offering rather than treating each requirement separately. Megaport itself has described the combination as bringing compute and network services together for high-performance workloads, including AI.
That is the structural story behind today's stock move.
Investors are not simply reacting to one group of contracts. They are also reassessing whether Megaport can turn its global connectivity network into a larger infrastructure platform serving the rapidly expanding demand for AI workloads.
Why AI Inference Is Important
A large portion of AI investment so far has focused on training massive models. Increasingly, however, companies also need infrastructure to run those models and process requests, known as AI inference.
Inference can require GPU capacity, low-latency networking and storage located close to users and applications.
Megaport's strategy is aimed at this part of the market.
Latitude.sh said in July that Megaport had raised A$827.3 million to build a globally distributed AI inference cloud. Part of the funds was earmarked for delivering previously secured contracts, while the company also planned to purchase 2,048 Nvidia B300 GPUs for its own on-demand compute pool.
That provides useful context for today's contract announcements. Megaport is trying to build infrastructure ahead of demand, rather than merely reselling connectivity.
The Growth Opportunity Comes With Higher Capital Needs
The AI opportunity also creates a key financial issue: infrastructure is expensive.
GPU servers, storage and network capacity require substantial upfront capital expenditure before the related recurring revenue is fully realised.
Megaport's new contracts are attractive partly because the agreements are long-term and provide revenue visibility, but investors still need to examine how much capital the company must invest to fulfil them and how quickly that investment generates cash returns.
Latitude.sh's July financing announcement illustrates the scale of the capital requirement. The A$827.3 million capital raise was explicitly intended to fund the build-out of AI infrastructure and GPU capacity.
This means headline contract value should not be confused with immediate profit or free cash flow.
A contract worth A$100 million over several years is revenue committed over the contract's life, not A$100 million of earnings arriving in the current quarter.
Why Investors Are Taking the Upgrade Seriously
Today's news also comes after a strong period for Megaport's existing business.
The company entered FY27 with group ARR above A$395 million, while its network platform continues to serve thousands of customers across a large global footprint.
The new AI contracts potentially add another layer of recurring revenue to that established network business.
That creates a potentially important operating model: Megaport can use its existing connectivity footprint to support customers that also require compute and storage, while Latitude.sh provides the additional infrastructure capabilities.
The company therefore has an opportunity to increase the amount of infrastructure each customer can consume through its platform.
Investors are effectively watching whether this cross-selling and infrastructure integration can turn into durable revenue growth and attractive returns on capital.
The Market Move Needs to Be Put in Context
Although the stock's intraday gain is large, Megaport had already been a strong performer before today's announcement.
The shares closed at A$18.85 on September 28, according to historical market data, having already risen substantially in 2026.
That matters because strong expectations may already be reflected in the share price.
When a growth stock rises rapidly, the market often becomes more sensitive to any evidence that actual contract wins, revenue growth or margins are falling short of expectations.
The latest guidance increase helps address that concern, but it does not eliminate execution risk.
Key Risks for Megaport Investors
The first risk is execution. Delivering large volumes of GPU, CPU, networking and storage capacity requires hardware procurement, deployment and operational execution.
The second is capital intensity. AI infrastructure can consume significant cash before the associated revenue becomes fully visible in reported earnings.
The third is customer concentration and contract timing. The customers in the latest deals were not disclosed, so investors have limited visibility into their individual credit profiles or the precise deployment schedules.
The fourth is AI spending durability. The long-term demand outlook for AI infrastructure remains substantial, but spending patterns can change as customers reassess the economics of AI applications, model efficiency and computing capacity.
Finally, valuation risk is important. A company can deliver strong operational growth while its share price becomes volatile if the market's expectations rise even faster.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The next focus should be whether Megaport converts today's large contract announcements into actual reported revenue and cash flow.
Investors should track the pace of Compute ARR growth, Network ARR, EBITDA margins and capital expenditure. They should also watch how quickly the new infrastructure is deployed and whether additional AI contracts continue to arrive.
Megaport's management has made AI infrastructure a major part of its expansion strategy, so future results will increasingly show whether the Latitude.sh acquisition is generating the returns expected when the strategy was launched.
The company's geographic reach is another factor worth following. Megaport's established connectivity footprint across data centres and major markets gives it a potentially useful base for distributed AI infrastructure, but the economics will depend on utilisation, pricing and infrastructure costs.
Bottom Line
Megaport stock is surging today because the company has secured A$978.6 million of new AI infrastructure contracts and simultaneously raised its FY27 revenue and EBITDA-margin forecasts. The contracts are expected to add about A$232.4 million in annual recurring revenue, while the company's revenue outlook has risen to A$720 million–A$810 million and its EBITDA margin target to 42%–44%.
The bigger story is Megaport's transformation from a connectivity specialist into a broader AI infrastructure platform combining networking, compute and storage. That strategy offers a potentially larger addressable market, but it also brings substantial capital requirements and execution risk.
For investors, the key question from here is not simply how high MP1 shares move today. It is whether Megaport can turn these large AI contracts into sustained recurring revenue, healthy margins and attractive cash returns as the infrastructure build-out scales.
