Why Is Codan Stock Surging Today? CDA Jumps 16.8% After Profit Update
Codan stock (ASX: CDA) is surging today after the Australian technology company raised expectations for first-half FY27 profit, driven by an exceptional increase in demand for its military communications products and continued strength in its Minelab metal-detection business.
Codan shares climbed as high as A$61.30 on September 29, 2026, before settling at A$60.73, up 16.8% for the session. The move came after the company issued a trading update showing that first-half revenue and net profit are tracking well ahead of the previous corresponding period.
The update is significant because the market already knew Codan had entered FY27 with strong momentum. Today's numbers indicate that demand has accelerated further, particularly in the Communications division.
Codan's Profit Outlook Has Changed Sharply
The main catalyst behind the Codan share price surge is the company's new first-half profit outlook.
Codan now expects H1 FY27 group net profit after tax (NPAT) of at least A$160 million, compared with A$71.2 million in the first half of FY26. That means first-half profit is expected to more than double and approach the company's entire FY26 NPAT of A$175.2 million.
The upgrade is particularly notable because it comes only a few months into the new financial year.
Codan's FY26 results had already been strong. Revenue increased 30% to A$875.0 million, while EBIT rose 67% to A$244.1 million and NPAT climbed 69% to A$175.2 million. The company also reported a 48.5-cent fully franked annual dividend.
The latest update suggests FY27 could begin at an even stronger pace.
Communications Business Is Driving the Rally
Codan's Communications division is the biggest reason investors are reacting so strongly.
The company expects H1 FY27 Communications revenue of A$400 million to A$410 million, compared with A$221.8 million in the prior corresponding period. That represents growth of roughly 80%–85% year over year.
The division's expected EBIT margin has also moved sharply higher. Codan expects a margin of around 40% for the first half, compared with 26% in H1 FY26.
For investors, that combination is more important than revenue growth alone.
When revenue rises rapidly while fixed costs grow more slowly, a business can generate operating leverage, meaning a larger portion of each additional dollar of sales flows through to profit. Codan appears to be benefiting from that effect in its Communications business.
Why Is Demand So Strong?
A major part of the increase is coming from unmanned systems and demand linked to conflict regions.
Codan said demand from conflict regions is currently exceptionally strong and is expected to account for approximately 50% of Communications revenue in H1 FY27, compared with about 20% in the previous corresponding period. The company said demand outside conflict regions is also strong, with broad-based growth across regions and markets.
Codan's technology is used in communications applications where reliability is important, including unmanned and defence-related systems.
The company's FY26 annual report had already highlighted elevated defence spending and geopolitical tensions as drivers of demand for unmanned systems. In FY26, revenue from the unmanned sector more than doubled to approximately A$215 million.
The latest trading update therefore appears to be an acceleration of an existing growth theme rather than an entirely new business direction.
The Minelab Business Is Adding Another Growth Engine
Codan is not relying solely on defence communications.
Its Minelab metal-detection business has also started FY27 strongly. The company said its H1 revenue run-rate is now slightly above H2 FY26 levels, supported by new product launches and a favourable gold-price environment.
That matters because Minelab gives Codan exposure to a different market from defence communications.
During FY26, Metal Detection revenue increased 42% to A$362.0 million, while segment profit jumped 65% to A$162.4 million. The company specifically highlighted products such as the GPZ8000 and Gold Monster 2000 gold detectors as important contributors.
The combination of strong Communications demand and solid Minelab trading gives Codan a more diversified earnings base.
Codan Has Raised the Bar for FY27
Investors should also note that the company's expectations have moved beyond the roughly 20% Communications revenue growth target outlined with its FY26 results.
The September 29 update indicates Codan is now targeting 30%–40% Communications revenue growth for FY27, although this remains dependent on how current demand develops and on the company's ability to manage supply-chain constraints.
That qualification is important.
Codan has explicitly warned that demand from conflict regions can be difficult to forecast over a full year. Management said it is too early to determine whether the current level of demand and margins can continue through the second half of FY27.
In other words, the first-half numbers are extremely strong, but they should not automatically be extrapolated across the whole financial year.
Why the Stock Reaction Is So Large
The market had already rewarded Codan's strong FY26 performance.
Before today's trading update, shares had risen substantially during 2026, with the stock hitting successive highs in September. The September 29 move took that momentum to another level, with shares closing at A$60.73 after reaching A$61.30 intraday.
A sharp earnings upgrade can have an outsized effect on a high-growth stock because investors are constantly reassessing future earnings.
Codan's FY26 earnings per share were 96.5 cents, while the latest share price is substantially above the levels at which the stock traded earlier in the year.
That also means valuation deserves attention.
Strong growth can justify a higher valuation, but the faster a stock rises ahead of reported earnings, the more future growth can become embedded in the market price. Any slowdown in Communications demand, a margin reset or supply constraints could therefore create volatility.
What Could Challenge the Rally?
The biggest risk is that part of the current profit strength is being driven by unusually strong demand from conflict regions.
That does not mean the demand will suddenly disappear. Codan's management has pointed to broader growth across markets and said demand outside conflict areas remains strong. But the company itself has acknowledged limited visibility for the second half of FY27.
Supply-chain constraints are another factor to watch. Codan's FY26 annual report said some constraints were emerging across parts of the global electronics supply chain.
If demand continues to rise faster than production capacity, the company's ability to convert orders into revenue could become a limiting factor.
There is also the question of how long Minelab's current momentum can continue if gold prices or consumer demand for detectors change.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The next important milestone is Codan's annual general meeting on October 20, where investors are expected to receive another update on trading conditions.
Between now and then, several indicators will be particularly important.
The first is whether Communications revenue continues tracking toward the A$400–410 million H1 range.
The second is whether the approximately 40% Communications EBIT margin proves sustainable.
The third is the mix of demand. Growth across non-conflict markets would make the earnings trajectory less dependent on orders associated with conflict regions.
Finally, investors should watch whether Minelab maintains its elevated revenue run-rate and whether supply-chain constraints begin affecting delivery schedules.
Bottom Line
So, why is Codan stock surging today? The immediate answer is a major improvement in first-half FY27 profit expectations. Codan now expects H1 NPAT of at least A$160 million, while Communications revenue is forecast at A$400–410 million and the segment margin at around 40%.
The rally is also supported by strong Minelab demand, ongoing unmanned-systems growth and Codan's previously strong FY26 financial performance.
The key issue from here is sustainability. Investors will be watching whether exceptionally strong Communications demand continues, whether margins remain elevated and whether the company can manage supply constraints without slowing deliveries.
