Air India Named Best Airline in India by Skytrax 2026

Air India Named Best Airline in India at Skytrax World Airline Awards 2026

Air India has been named the Best Airline in India at the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards, marking a significant recognition for the carrier as it continues its multi-year transformation under the Vihaan.AI programme.

The award is particularly notable because the Skytrax rankings are based on passenger feedback rather than an editorial assessment by Skytrax. Air India also received the award for Best Airline Staff in India & South Asia and a Skytrax 4-Star Airline certification for its Business Class and Economy Class offering.

The recognition comes as India's aviation market continues to expand and competition between full-service and low-cost carriers intensifies.

Air India Tops India's Airline Rankings

Skytrax's 2026 India and South Asia ranking placed Air India at No. 1, followed by IndiGo and Akasa Air.

The top 10 airlines listed in the India/South Asia ranking were:

  1. Air India

  2. IndiGo

  3. Akasa Air

  4. Air India Express

  5. SriLankan Airlines

  6. SpiceJet

  7. BeOnd

  8. Biman Bangladesh Airlines

  9. Pakistan International Airlines

  10. Maldivian

Skytrax's official regional results confirm Air India's first position.

The result represents a change from the previous year's ranking, with Air India moving ahead of IndiGo in the overall India/South Asia list. IndiGo, however, retained strong positions in several specific categories.

Air India Also Wins Staff and Service Recognition

The airline's 2026 performance went beyond the headline Best Airline in India award.

Skytrax named Air India Best Airline Staff in India & South Asia. The carrier also received awards for Best Economy Class in India & South Asia, Best Economy Class Onboard Catering, Best Business Class and Best Business Class Onboard Catering.

These awards are significant because they cover different parts of the passenger experience, rather than simply measuring the airline's overall ranking.

Air India also secured second place globally in the World's Most Improved Airlines category. Egyptair took the top position, while Royal Jordanian ranked third. Skytrax says this award measures changes in an airline's global rating and performance across different award categories.

How Skytrax Decided the 2026 Rankings

The Skytrax World Airline Awards are based on its annual global passenger satisfaction survey.

For the 2026 awards, the survey covered the period from September 2025 through August 2026. According to Skytrax and reports on the awards, the survey generated 24.8 million eligible entries from travellers representing more than 100 nationalities and covered more than 300 airlines.

Passenger feedback covered multiple aspects of the travel experience, including cabin service, cleanliness, onboard facilities, airport services and different cabin classes.

That distinction matters when interpreting the award. Being named India's best airline in the Skytrax ranking means Air India received the highest overall passenger ranking in that particular survey and category. It does not mean that every traveller will have the same experience on every route or flight.

IndiGo Remains a Major Competitor

Air India's overall win does not mean IndiGo has lost its position across India's aviation market.

IndiGo was named Best Low-Cost Airline in India & South Asia and also won awards for Best Cabin Crew in India & South Asia and Cleanest Airline in India & South Asia.

This highlights the different strengths of India's two largest airline brands.

Air India's strategy is centred more heavily on a full-service proposition and international connectivity, while IndiGo's low-cost model remains a major part of its competitive positioning.

For passengers, the choice can therefore depend on factors such as route, schedule, fare, cabin class, baggage requirements, loyalty benefits and service expectations rather than a single industry award.

Air India's Transformation Is Starting to Show

The Skytrax recognition comes against the backdrop of a major transformation programme at Air India.

The airline's Vihaan.AI programme has included fleet renewal, cabin upgrades, lounge improvements, digital initiatives, customer-support changes and employee training.

Air India said more than 130 narrowbody and widebody aircraft in its fleet are now either new or upgraded. The programme includes new Airbus A350 aircraft, Boeing 787-9 aircraft and retrofits of existing narrowbody and widebody planes.

The carrier has also pointed to improvements in customer advocacy. According to Air India, its Net Promoter Score, or NPS, has improved from -35 in late 2022 to nearly +40, while its A350 and 787-9 aircraft have recorded NPS readings in the high 60s.

NPS is a customer-loyalty measure based on how likely customers are to recommend a company. It is useful as an indicator of customer sentiment, although it should not be treated as a direct measure of profitability or operational performance.

Why the Award Matters for Air India

For Air India, the award has a significance beyond marketing.

The airline is attempting to reposition itself as a stronger global carrier at a time when Indian passenger traffic and international travel demand are expanding.

A better passenger experience can potentially support several parts of that strategy:

  • Stronger customer loyalty

  • Greater appeal among premium travellers

  • Improved international brand recognition

  • Higher utilisation of upgraded aircraft and cabins

  • Greater relevance in long-haul markets

  • Better positioning against Gulf and Asian full-service airlines

However, an award does not by itself resolve the operational and financial challenges involved in running a large international airline.

The sustainability of Air India's transformation will depend on factors such as fleet availability, punctuality, network economics, aircraft utilisation, customer service consistency, international route performance and cost control.

Air India Still Has a Long Way to Go Globally

Despite winning the top Indian ranking, Air India was not among the world's top 10 airlines in the 2026 Skytrax rankings.

Skytrax's global list was led by Singapore Airlines, followed by Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, ANA All Nippon Airways and Turkish Airlines. Air India ranked 57th globally, improving substantially from its 2025 position of 84th. IndiGo ranked 61st, compared with 39th in 2025.

The jump in Air India's global position is another indication of improvement in the areas measured by the Skytrax survey.

But the gap with the world's leading airlines remains considerable.

That gives the carrier a clear benchmark for the next stage of its transformation.

What Investors and the Aviation Industry Should Watch

Although Air India itself is not a separately listed airline, its performance matters to India's broader aviation ecosystem.

The Tata Group's aviation strategy involves Air India and Air India Express, while listed companies across airports, aircraft services, catering, travel and aviation-related infrastructure can be affected by changes in India's air-travel market.

For industry watchers, the key indicators going forward will be more fundamental than awards alone.

Passenger growth, international capacity, aircraft deliveries, fleet utilisation, on-time performance, premium traffic, unit costs and profitability will provide a better picture of whether Air India's transformation is translating into a sustainable business improvement.

The Skytrax recognition can strengthen the brand, but maintaining service quality as the network grows will be the more important long-term test.

What the 2026 Skytrax Award Means for Air India

Air India's selection as Best Airline in India at the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards is a notable milestone in its transformation.

The airline has moved ahead of IndiGo in Skytrax's overall India/South Asia ranking, while also receiving recognition for its staff, economy and business-class products. Its second-place global Most Improved Airline ranking adds another measure of progress.

The next question is whether those improvements can be maintained consistently across Air India's growing domestic and international network.

For travellers, the award provides a useful passenger-satisfaction benchmark. For the aviation industry, it is another indication that Air India's transformation is becoming visible in customer feedback. The longer-term test will be whether improved service translates into stronger loyalty, operational consistency and sustainable financial performance.
