Mettupalayam Tirunelveli Special Train Extended

Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli Special Train Service Extended: Check New Dates and Timings

Passengers travelling between Mettupalayam and Tirunelveli will get additional rail connectivity in September 2026 after Southern Railway extended the operation of the weekly special train service on this route.

The Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli Special Train Service Extension covers four additional weekly services in each direction. The announcement is particularly relevant for passengers travelling between western and southern Tamil Nadu through major stations including Coimbatore, Pollachi, Palani, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli.

The extended service includes Train No. 06030 from Tirunelveli to Mettupalayam and Train No. 06029 in the return direction.

Tirunelveli–Mettupalayam Special Train: New Service Dates

Train No. 06030, Tirunelveli–Mettupalayam Weekly Special, will operate on Sundays from September 6 to September 27, 2026.

The train is scheduled to leave Tirunelveli at 7:00 PM and reach Mettupalayam at 7:30 AM the following day. The extension covers four Sunday services during the announced period.

This provides an overnight travel option for passengers moving from southern Tamil Nadu towards Coimbatore and Mettupalayam.

Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli Special Train: Return Schedule

In the opposite direction, Train No. 06029, Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli Weekly Special, will operate on Mondays from September 7 to September 28, 2026.

The train is scheduled to depart Mettupalayam at 7:45 PM and arrive at Tirunelveli at 8:05 AM the next day. Four Monday services have been announced under the extension.

Together, the two services provide weekly connectivity in both directions, allowing passengers to travel between the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam region and Tirunelveli through a long list of intermediate stations.

Major Stations Covered by the Special Train

The Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli weekly special connects several important towns and cities across Tamil Nadu.

Major stoppages include:

  • Coimbatore Junction

  • Podanur

  • Kinathukadavu

  • Pollachi

  • Udumalaipettai

  • Palani

  • Oddanchatram

  • Dindigul

  • Madurai

  • Virudhunagar

  • Sivakasi

  • Srivilliputhur

  • Rajapalayam

  • Sankarankovil

  • Kadayanallur

  • Tenkasi

  • Pavoorchatram

  • Kizhakadaiyam

  • Ambasamudram

  • Kallidaikurichi

  • Cheranmahadevi

The wide route coverage is one reason the extension could be useful for passengers beyond the two terminal cities.

Why the Service Extension Matters

Special trains are typically used to provide additional capacity when existing services face higher passenger demand. In this case, extending the Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli service means passengers will continue to have an additional weekly option during September instead of losing the service at the end of its earlier operating period.

The route is significant because it links western Tamil Nadu with southern districts through important regional centres. Passengers travelling for work, education, family visits or other purposes may benefit from the overnight schedule and the train's extensive list of stoppages.

For travellers, however, it is important to understand that this remains a special train service. An extension of periodicity does not automatically mean that the train has become a permanent regular service.

What Passengers Should Check Before Booking

Passengers planning to travel on Train No. 06029 or 06030 should verify the latest details before booking or beginning their journey.

Confirm the Travel Date

The services operate weekly rather than daily. Train No. 06030 is scheduled on Sundays, while Train No. 06029 is scheduled on Mondays during the announced extension period.

Check Seat Availability

Special trains can experience strong demand depending on the travel date and destination. Checking reservation availability early can help passengers plan their journey.

Verify the Latest Timetable

Railway operations can occasionally change because of engineering works, operational requirements or other factors. Passengers should therefore check the latest schedule through official Indian Railways and reservation channels before travelling.

Confirm Your Boarding Station

Because the train stops at multiple stations across Tamil Nadu, travellers should carefully verify their selected boarding and destination stations while making a reservation.

Part of a Wider Extension of Special Train Services

The Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli service is among several special train services whose operations have been extended to meet passenger requirements. Southern Railway has continued to use periodic extensions to maintain additional capacity on selected routes where extra services remain useful.

For passengers, these extensions can be especially important during periods when regular trains have limited availability. However, the announced dates apply specifically to the current extension, and travellers should avoid assuming that the service will continue indefinitely beyond September 2026.

The Key Takeaway

The Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli Special Train Service Extension gives passengers four additional weekly services in each direction.

Train No. 06030 will run from Tirunelveli to Mettupalayam on Sundays between September 6 and September 27, 2026. Train No. 06029 will operate from Mettupalayam to Tirunelveli on Mondays between September 7 and September 28, 2026.

The extension provides continued connectivity across western, central and southern Tamil Nadu, covering important cities and towns along the route. Passengers planning to travel should check the latest timetable and reservation availability before finalising their journey.
