Why Is SanDisk Stock Surging Today? SNDK Rally Explained

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) is back in focus on Wall Street after the memory-chip maker received a fresh bullish analyst call and continued to benefit from strong demand expectations for NAND flash storage linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The stock initially jumped more than 7% during Tuesday's September 22 session, according to market data, after Rosenblatt Securities initiated coverage on SanDisk with a $2,400 price target. The shares subsequently gave back much of that move, showing how volatile the stock has become after its extraordinary 2026 rally.

The immediate catalyst is therefore not a new earnings report or acquisition announcement. Instead, investors are responding to a combination of fresh analyst coverage, AI-driven storage demand, tighter NAND supply conditions and SanDisk's increasingly optimistic long-term financial outlook.

The Main Catalyst: Rosenblatt Starts Coverage on SanDisk

Rosenblatt Securities analyst Kevin Cassidy initiated coverage of SanDisk with a Buy rating and a $2,400 price target on September 21. The target was about 36% above SanDisk's September 21 closing price of $1,766.64.

Cassidy's thesis centers on a structural change in how NAND flash could be used in AI computing.

Traditionally, NAND has largely been viewed as a storage component. But the growth of AI workloads is increasing the amount of data that needs to be stored, accessed and processed across data centers.

That creates a potentially larger role for high-performance flash storage in AI infrastructure.

The analyst's argument is significant because SanDisk is already a major NAND supplier, giving investors another reason to view the company as an AI-infrastructure beneficiary rather than simply a conventional memory-cycle stock.

However, analyst targets are opinions, not guarantees. SanDisk's stock has already experienced an enormous re-rating, meaning expectations embedded in the share price are much higher than they were at the beginning of the year.

AI Is Changing the Storage Demand Story

The broader investment thesis behind SanDisk is closely tied to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.

AI models require enormous amounts of data, and the infrastructure supporting those models needs increasingly sophisticated storage. As AI inference expands beyond training, the amount of information that needs to be stored and accessed can also increase.

SanDisk highlighted this trend during its August 2026 Investor Day.

The company said the total addressable market for enterprise data-center flash could reach 1.2 zettabytes by 2030, driven partly by increasingly storage-intensive AI inference workloads.

A zettabyte is an extremely large unit of digital information—one zettabyte equals one trillion gigabytes.

For investors, the significance is straightforward: if AI infrastructure requires substantially more high-performance storage, companies supplying NAND and enterprise SSDs could potentially capture a larger portion of semiconductor spending.

SanDisk Has Locked In More Long-Term Business

Another factor supporting the stock is SanDisk's increasing use of what it calls New Business Model agreements, or NBMs.

These contracts include committed volumes, minimum financial guarantees and structured pricing mechanisms. According to SanDisk, it had signed NBMs with eight customers representing approximately 50% of bits in fiscal 2027 and about two-thirds of bits in fiscal 2028 as of its August Investor Day.

That is important because the NAND industry has historically been highly cyclical.

Memory manufacturers can experience large swings in prices and profitability when supply exceeds demand or customers reduce inventories.

Longer-term agreements can provide greater visibility into future volumes and cash flows, potentially reducing some of that uncertainty.

It does not eliminate the memory cycle, but it can change the economics of a portion of SanDisk's business.

SanDisk's Long-Term Financial Targets Are Also Supporting Sentiment

At its Investor Day, SanDisk laid out a new financial model covering fiscal 2028 through fiscal 2030.

The company expects revenue to grow at a mid-to-high-teens rate over that period. It also targets non-GAAP gross margins of approximately 80%, non-GAAP operating margins of around 75% and an adjusted free-cash-flow margin of roughly 50%.

SanDisk also said it expects to return 100% of excess cash to shareholders after investing in the business.

These are management targets rather than guaranteed results.

Still, they have helped investors build a more optimistic view of SanDisk's earnings potential if AI-driven storage demand remains strong and NAND pricing stays supportive.

Recent Earnings Added to the Bullish Narrative

SanDisk's fiscal fourth-quarter results also provided evidence of strong momentum.

For the quarter ended June 27, 2026, the company reported $8.97 billion in revenue, up 51% sequentially, while GAAP net income reached $6.90 billion, or $43.97 per diluted share. SanDisk said approximately one-third of its sequential revenue growth came from higher volumes and two-thirds from higher pricing.

That pricing component is particularly important for memory investors.

When NAND prices rise while demand remains strong, manufacturers can see substantial operating leverage because incremental revenue can translate into disproportionately higher profits.

The risk is that memory pricing can also reverse quickly if supply increases faster than demand.

The Stock's Extraordinary Rally Is Part of the Story

SanDisk's fundamentals are only one reason the stock is attracting so much attention.

The shares have already experienced an extraordinary rally in 2026. SanDisk closed at $1,766.64 on September 21, compared with $245.81 at the end of 2025, according to historical market data. That represents a gain of more than 600% during the year.

The stock also remains well below its 2026 peak near $2,354, demonstrating just how volatile the shares have been.

That creates an important distinction for investors.

The AI and NAND fundamentals may be improving, but a large portion of the expected improvement can already be reflected in the share price.

In other words, strong business performance does not automatically mean the stock will continue rising at the same pace.

SanDisk's S&P 100 Inclusion Adds Another Demand Factor

SanDisk also recently became a member of the S&P 100, adding another potential source of institutional attention.

Index inclusion can lead funds that track an index to adjust their holdings, although the effect can vary depending on how much of the expected buying has already been reflected in the stock.

SanDisk's recent trading activity has been unusually large, with more than 10 million shares changing hands on September 21 as the stock pulled back 1.41% after two strong sessions.

That volatility shows that investors are actively repositioning around the stock rather than simply following a one-directional trend.

What Could Drive SanDisk Stock Next?

The next phase of the SanDisk story will depend on whether the current AI-memory boom translates into sustained earnings growth.

Investors should watch several factors:

  • NAND average selling prices

  • Enterprise SSD demand

  • AI data-center storage deployments

  • Customer commitments under long-term agreements

  • SanDisk's gross and operating margins

  • NAND supply additions from competitors

  • Demand trends at major cloud and AI infrastructure companies

  • SanDisk's next earnings report

  • Capital returns and share repurchases

The upcoming results from other major memory companies could also provide important read-throughs for the sector.

If pricing and demand remain strong, SanDisk's earnings expectations could receive further support. If memory supply starts catching up with demand, however, the company's margins could face pressure.

The Biggest Risk: Expectations Are Already High

SanDisk's rally itself is now one of the biggest risks investors need to consider.

The stock's enormous increase means its valuation is substantially higher than it was earlier in the year. Investors are therefore no longer evaluating SanDisk simply on whether the business improves; they are also evaluating how much improvement is already priced into the stock.

The memory industry also remains cyclical. NAND pricing, customer inventories, semiconductor supply and capital expenditure can change quickly.

SanDisk has additionally identified risks involving demand volatility, pricing, competition, manufacturing, technology transitions, key partnerships and the broader economic environment in its corporate disclosures.

For that reason, the AI-storage opportunity should be viewed alongside the traditional risks of the memory industry.

SanDisk Stock Outlook

The latest SanDisk rally is being driven by a combination of fresh bullish analyst coverage and a broader AI-memory investment thesis.

Rosenblatt's $2,400 target has given the stock another near-term catalyst, while SanDisk's own long-term targets, AI-storage strategy and growing use of longer-term customer agreements have strengthened the fundamental narrative.

But the stock's huge 2026 gains mean volatility and valuation risk cannot be ignored.

The key question for investors now is whether AI-driven demand can continue to support higher NAND prices, stronger margins and sustained cash generation. The next earnings reports and developments in enterprise AI storage demand should provide a clearer test of that thesis.
