Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Crop Faces Rising Red Rot Risk: What Farmers Should Know



The red rot disease in Uttar Pradesh sugarcane crop is again becoming a serious concern as the monsoon creates conditions favourable for disease development. Farmers, particularly those still cultivating susceptible varieties such as Co 0238, are being advised to monitor their fields closely and remove infected plants promptly.

Red rot is not a new problem for Uttar Pradesh’s sugarcane sector. However, its recurring presence in major cane-growing districts has made disease-resistant varieties, field sanitation and proper drainage increasingly important for protecting yields.

The Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research (UPCSR) recorded severe red rot incidence in several western and central Uttar Pradesh sugar mill areas during its latest detailed disease survey. In some surveyed plots, incidence in Co 0238 reached extremely high levels.

Why Red Rot Is a Major Concern for UP Sugarcane Farmers

Red rot is a fungal disease of sugarcane that can damage the stalk from inside. One of the key challenges is that external symptoms may not always be obvious at the beginning.

When an infected stalk is split, the internal tissue can show characteristic reddish discoloration, often accompanied by pale or whitish patches. Yellowing and drying of leaves can also appear as the disease progresses.

The problem becomes particularly important during the monsoon because warm, humid conditions can favour disease development. Research on sugarcane pathology has identified the July-August monsoon period in northern Uttar Pradesh as a particularly important period for red rot risk.

ICAR advisories have also stressed avoiding water stagnation and removing affected plants as part of red rot management.

Co 0238 Remains at the Centre of the Problem

One of the biggest reasons red rot continues to attract attention in Uttar Pradesh is the widespread historical use of Co 0238.

The variety became extremely popular because of its strong yield and sugar-quality characteristics. ICAR notes that Co 0238 achieved high cane yield and spread rapidly across major subtropical sugarcane-growing states, including Uttar Pradesh.

However, the variety's vulnerability to red rot has increasingly become a concern.

The UPCSR's 2024-25 annual report recorded red rot incidence of up to 100% in Co 0238 in some surveyed areas of Moradabad district. High incidence was also reported in parts of Bijnor, Amroha, Muzaffarnagar and other western and central UP locations.

This explains why the state has been working toward replacing susceptible Co 0238 acreage with improved varieties.

A 2026 survey of Uttar Pradesh's sugarcane crop specifically included mapping Co 0238 acreage, with the objective of systematically phasing out the variety where appropriate and promoting improved alternatives.

What Farmers Should Check in Their Fields

Farmers should not wait for widespread crop damage before inspecting their fields.

Particular attention should be given to:

  • Yellowing or drying of leaves, especially when plants appear weaker than surrounding cane.

  • Suspiciously poor-growing clumps.

  • Internal red discoloration after splitting a suspected stalk.

  • Whitish patches or characteristic streaking inside the cane.

  • Areas where water remains stagnant after rainfall.

  • Patches where several plants show similar symptoms.

If a plant is suspected to have red rot, farmers should seek advice from their local agriculture department, sugar mill technical team, Krishi Vigyan Kendra or sugarcane research institution before deciding on chemical treatment.

Drainage and Removal of Infected Plants Matter

Disease management is not simply about spraying chemicals.

Proper drainage is particularly important during periods of heavy rainfall. Standing water can create stressful conditions for the crop and contribute to disease problems. ICAR's farmer advisories recommend avoiding water stagnation and practising rouging — removing affected plants from the field — when red rot is detected.

Farmers should also avoid using visibly diseased cane as planting material. Healthy seed cane is an important part of disease-management strategy because infected planting material can help carry pathogens into new fields.

The goal should be to stop isolated disease patches from becoming a larger field-wide problem.

Resistant Varieties Are Becoming More Important

The longer-term answer to Uttar Pradesh's red rot challenge is not simply to manage infection after it appears. Variety diversification and the use of varieties with better disease resistance are becoming increasingly important.

ICAR-IISR lists several varieties developed or recommended for Uttar Pradesh and adjoining zones with resistant to moderately resistant reactions to red rot. These include varieties such as CoLk 8001, CoLk 8102, CoLk 9709, CoLk 94184, CoLk 16466 and CoLk 15206, although the appropriate variety depends on the specific agro-climatic zone and local recommendations.

Another development came in 2026 with the wider approval of the Bismil sugarcane variety. The variety, developed by the Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Council, was approved for cultivation in Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan after previously being approved for Uttar Pradesh. It has been described as resistant to red rot.

That does not mean farmers should switch varieties blindly. Seed selection should follow recommendations applicable to their district and sugar mill command area.

Why the Disease Also Matters for Sugar Companies

The red rot issue is bigger than an individual farmer's field.

Sugar mills depend on a steady supply of healthy sugarcane. A significant decline in cane yield can reduce the amount of cane available for crushing and potentially affect sugar recovery and production.

The financial implications can therefore extend across the sugarcane value chain — from farmers and cane societies to sugar mills, ethanol producers and other sugar-related businesses.

A 2025 company-sector disclosure also highlighted excessive rainfall during August-September and red rot management as important risks for Uttar Pradesh's sugar output, particularly in areas that had already suffered crop losses.

For investors tracking sugar stocks, this means disease developments should be considered alongside sugar prices, cane availability, sugar recovery, ethanol policy, government regulations and mill-level financial performance.

What Farmers Should Do Now

The immediate priority is regular field monitoring during the monsoon.

Farmers should inspect suspicious plants, maintain drainage, remove infected clumps where advised and avoid carrying diseased planting material into the next crop. For future planting, disease resistance should be an important consideration alongside yield, maturity, sugar recovery and local suitability.

Most importantly, farmers should not rely on unverified pesticide or fungicide recommendations circulating on social media. The correct treatment, if any, should be based on the disease diagnosis and local agricultural advice.

Outlook: Disease Management Will Remain Important

The red rot challenge is unlikely to disappear simply by replacing one variety with another. Pathogens can evolve, and a variety that performs well today may face new disease pressures over time.

That makes continuous disease surveillance and breeding for resistance important for Uttar Pradesh's sugar economy. ICAR has already identified red rot as a major research challenge and highlighted the need for improved approaches to disease resistance.

For farmers, the key message is straightforward: do not ignore early symptoms, do not allow infected cane to spread through planting material, and choose future varieties based on locally recommended disease resistance as well as yield.

The immediate red rot risk is a crop-management issue, but its consequences can extend to sugar production and the broader sugar industry. Farmers should therefore remain particularly alert during the monsoon and follow advice from qualified agricultural experts and local sugarcane authorities.
