Sukhoi, Tejas or Rafale: Which Fighter Jet Is the Most Powerful?



India's fighter-jet fleet combines aircraft built around very different roles. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI, HAL Tejas and Rafale are all capable combat aircraft, but asking which one is the “most dangerous” does not have a simple one-word answer.

The Su-30MKI is a large, twin-engine, long-range multirole fighter; Tejas is a lighter indigenous fighter designed around agility, modern avionics and a smaller footprint; and Rafale is a sophisticated multirole “omnirole” aircraft designed to perform air-to-air, air-to-ground, reconnaissance and other missions. India's own Vayu Shakti-2026 exercise featured all three platforms conducting operational missions, highlighting that they complement rather than simply replace one another.

So, which is the most capable? For overall high-end multirole capability, Rafale has the edge. For long-range heavy strike and payload, Su-30MKI remains extremely important. For indigenous capability, lighter weight and future scalability, Tejas is strategically significant.

Su-30MKI: India's Heavyweight Fighter

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is the largest and heaviest of the three. HAL describes it as a twin-seat, multirole, long-range fighter/bomber and air-superiority aircraft.

Its biggest advantage is the combination of range, payload, twin-engine performance and flexibility.

The aircraft has 12 hard points and can carry a wide variety of guided and unguided weapons. It also has in-flight refuelling capability, allowing it to remain relevant for long-range missions.

One of the Su-30MKI's most important Indian-specific capabilities is its integration with the BrahMos air-launched missile. India successfully demonstrated the extended-range BrahMos air-launched missile from the Su-30MKI, giving the IAF a long-range precision-strike capability against land and maritime targets.

That makes the Su-30MKI particularly valuable when the mission requires carrying substantial weapons over long distances.

The aircraft is also continuing to receive attention from the Indian defence establishment. In December 2024, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with HAL for 12 additional Su-30MKI aircraft, with the jets to be manufactured at HAL's Nashik division.

Its main disadvantage compared with newer designs is that it is a much larger platform. Modern combat is increasingly about sensors, electronic warfare, networking and weapons integration rather than simply aircraft size or engine power.

Tejas: India's Indigenous Lightweight Fighter

The HAL Tejas represents a different philosophy.

It is a lightweight, single-engine fighter developed in India and features a compound tail-less delta configuration, quadruplex-redundant fly-by-wire flight controls and an open-architecture mission computer.

HAL lists the LCA's maximum speed at Mach 1.6, service ceiling at 50,000 feet and maximum take-off mass at 13,500 kg. The aircraft has nine hard points and is designed to carry a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.

The more advanced Tejas Mk1A brings a significant avionics upgrade. HAL's published material lists an AESA radar, long-range beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile capability, an AESA-based self-protection jammer and a digital wide-band radar warning receiver among its features.

That is important because modern air combat is increasingly decided by who can detect, identify, track, jam and engage an opponent first.

Tejas is therefore not simply a smaller version of the Su-30MKI. Its value lies in providing the IAF with a lighter indigenous fighter while expanding India's domestic aerospace manufacturing and technology base.

Its limitation is straightforward: it does not have the same physical size, payload capacity or twin-engine power as the Su-30MKI.

Rafale: The High-End Multirole Fighter

The Rafale occupies the high-end of this comparison.

Dassault Aviation describes it as an “omnirole” fighter capable of combining air superiority, air defence, ground attack, reconnaissance and anti-ship missions. It is also designed to perform multiple mission types during the same sortie.

Its published specifications include a maximum speed of Mach 1.8, a service ceiling of 50,000 feet, a maximum take-off weight of 24.5 tonnes and an external load capacity of 9.5 tonnes. It has 14 store stations, five of which can carry heavy ordnance or drop tanks.

One of the Rafale's biggest advantages is its sensor and electronic-warfare ecosystem.

The aircraft uses the RBE2 AESA radar, which Dassault says provides multi-target detection and tracking, including in severe jamming environments. It also has an integrated Front Sector Optronics system for passive detection and tracking.

Its weapon integration includes the Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, MICA missiles and SCALP long-range cruise missiles, among other weapons.

India currently operates 36 Rafales acquired for the IAF, while a separate contract for 26 Rafale Marine fighters for the Indian Navy was signed in April 2025. In February 2026, India's Defence Acquisition Council also granted Acceptance of Necessity for procurement of Rafale aircraft under the Multi Role Fighter Aircraft programme for the IAF.

The figures should not be interpreted as a direct “scorecard.” Aircraft performance changes with configuration, weapons, fuel load and mission profile.

Which Fighter Is the Most Dangerous?

If the question is which aircraft has the strongest overall high-end combat package, Rafale is the most convincing answer among these three.

Its combination of AESA radar, electronic warfare, sensor fusion, long-range weapons, multirole capability and combat experience makes it exceptionally capable. Dassault says Rafale has been combat-proven since 2007 across operations including Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq and Syria.

But that does not make the Su-30MKI obsolete.

For missions requiring heavy weapons, long range and substantial payload, the Su-30MKI offers capabilities that a lightweight fighter cannot replicate. Its BrahMos integration further gives it a distinctive strategic role within India's airpower structure.

Tejas, meanwhile, should be judged against its role rather than against the Su-30MKI's size. The Mk1A's AESA radar, electronic-warfare capabilities and indigenous architecture make it an important part of India's attempt to build a larger and more self-reliant fighter fleet.

Why India Needs All Three

Modern air warfare is rarely about sending one type of fighter against another in isolation.

A realistic operation can involve fighters, airborne early-warning aircraft, tankers, ground-based air defence, electronic warfare, drones, data links and long-range missiles working together.

The Vayu Shakti-2026 exercise demonstrated this broader approach, with Rafale, Su-30MKI and Tejas participating alongside other aircraft and advanced weapon systems. The Ministry of Defence described the exercise as a demonstration of integrated, network-centric operations.

That is why asking whether Tejas can simply “beat” a Rafale misses the larger picture. The effectiveness of a fighter depends heavily on the mission, pilot training, sensors, weapons, support systems, intelligence and the wider network in which the aircraft operates.

The Bottom Line

There is no single winner in every category.

Rafale: strongest overall high-end multirole package among the three.

Su-30MKI: heavyweight platform with exceptional range, payload and strategic strike potential, including BrahMos integration.

Tejas Mk1A: lighter indigenous fighter with modern AESA radar and electronic-warfare capabilities, and major importance for India's long-term aerospace self-reliance.

The real strength of India's fighter fleet comes from combining these capabilities, not choosing one aircraft as universally superior. The next major story to watch is how quickly newer Tejas variants and upgraded Su-30MKI aircraft enter service alongside Rafale and how effectively India's fighter fleet becomes integrated with indigenous missiles, sensors and networked warfare systems.
