A claim that a former Pakistan Air Force officer confirmed that Rafale's missile advantage forced Pakistan to keep its F-16 fighters grounded during Operation Sindoor has attracted attention in defence circles. But the available evidence does not support presenting that claim as an established fact.

What the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict did demonstrate, however, was something more significant: modern air combat is increasingly determined by beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles, sensors, electronic warfare, airborne early warning, data links and tactics, rather than by the fighter aircraft alone.

That distinction matters because Pakistan's F-16 fleet was not simply rendered useless by the Rafale. Pakistan had newer J-10C fighters and PL-15 missiles, while the actual employment of F-16s during the confrontation remains disputed.

What Did the Former PAF Officer Actually Say?

One former PAF officer whose comments received attention after Operation Sindoor was retired Air Marshal Masood Akhtar. In May 2025, reports quoted him acknowledging that an Indian BrahMos strike damaged a Pakistani Saab 2000 Erieye airborne early-warning aircraft at Bholari airbase.

That is different from confirming that Rafale missiles forced every Pakistani F-16 to remain grounded.

Another former PAF officer, Air Commodore (Retd.) Khalid Chishti, discussed Pakistan's experience during Operation Sindoor in a later interview, describing the strikes as exposing weaknesses in Pakistan's military response.

But neither source provides reliable evidence for the sweeping claim that Rafale missile superiority alone grounded Pakistan's entire F-16 fleet.

That distinction is essential when reporting on a conflict where both sides have released competing narratives.

Why BVR Combat Became the Central Issue

BVR combat means engaging an aircraft with an air-to-air missile before the opposing pilots can see each other.

In traditional dogfighting, manoeuvrability, pilot skill and short-range missiles could dominate the outcome. Modern BVR warfare is much more complicated.

A fighter may receive information about an enemy from an airborne early-warning aircraft, ground radar or another networked platform. It can then launch a missile without necessarily turning on its own radar continuously.

A DRDO publication discussing Operation Sindoor noted that aircraft on both sides had electronically scanned radars and BVR missiles capable of engagements at very long distances. It also highlighted the role of AWACS aircraft and datalinks in creating the broader air picture.

This is why the phrase “Rafale vs F-16” can be misleading.

The real contest is closer to:

Rafale + Meteor + sensors + electronic warfare + Indian network

versus

F-16/J-10C + air-defence network + AWACS + BVR missiles + Pakistani command-and-control.

Rafale's Meteor Missile Is a Major Capability

India's Rafale fighters are capable of carrying the Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, which is widely regarded as one of the most capable BVR weapons in its class.

The missile's importance comes from its propulsion and ability to retain energy during the terminal phase of an engagement. That potentially gives the launching aircraft a large “no-escape” zone compared with conventional air-to-air missiles.

India Today highlighted the Meteor, Rafale's electronic-warfare suite and AESA radar among the aircraft's important advantages during its comparison of Indian Rafales and Pakistan's F-16s.

But a missile's published range does not automatically translate into a guaranteed kill.

The actual outcome depends on target altitude, speed, aspect, electronic warfare, radar support, missile warning systems and the quality of the information supplied to the shooter.

That is why calling Meteor an automatic “F-16 killer” would be inaccurate.

Pakistan Had Another Answer: J-10C and PL-15

Perhaps the most important part of the 2025 air-war story is that Pakistan was not relying solely on its F-16s.

The Pakistan Air Force had already introduced China's J-10C fighter, and the aircraft is associated with the PL-15 long-range air-to-air missile.

Reuters reported during the May 2025 confrontation that U.S. officials believed Pakistani J-10 fighters had shot down at least two Indian aircraft, including at least one Rafale. India subsequently acknowledged that it had suffered aircraft losses, although officials rejected Pakistan's larger claims.

This is important because it undermines a simplistic narrative in which Rafale enjoyed an uncontested BVR advantage throughout the conflict.

Pakistan's J-10C gave its air force a relatively modern platform designed for the same broad generation of networked, long-range air combat.

In other words, Pakistan had already begun moving beyond dependence on its older American fighters.

Were Pakistan's F-16s Actually Grounded?

This is where the headline claim needs the most caution.

Some Indian reporting argued that Pakistan's F-16 fleet faced restrictions, maintenance challenges and limitations compared with India's Rafale.

Pakistan, meanwhile, said after the confrontation that its F-16s were not flown and that none had been shot down.

Indian officials later provided a different account, saying that Pakistani aircraft and infrastructure had been hit during the operation. Claims about individual F-16 losses have remained contested.

There is therefore not enough independently verified evidence to state as fact that all F-16s were grounded because pilots feared Rafale's Meteor missile.

A more defensible conclusion is that Pakistan had strong reasons to carefully manage the exposure of its aircraft during a high-end BVR confrontation.

Keeping valuable fighters away from an opponent's strongest engagement zones can itself be a tactical decision. It does not necessarily mean the aircraft is technologically obsolete.

The Bigger Advantage Was the Entire Combat Network

The most important lesson from Operation Sindoor may be that fighter specifications alone are becoming less useful for judging air superiority.

Consider an aircraft approaching hostile airspace.

It needs to know:

  • Where the enemy fighters are
  • What missiles they are carrying
  • Whether hostile radar has detected it
  • Which electronic-warfare systems are active
  • Where enemy surface-to-air missiles are positioned
  • Which friendly aircraft can provide targeting information

This is why AWACS and datalinks are so important.

If an aircraft can receive accurate targeting information without exposing its own position, it can potentially launch a missile while remaining difficult to detect.

The loss or damage of an airborne early-warning platform can therefore affect much more than one aircraft.

It can degrade the entire air picture.

Operation Sindoor Was Not a Simple Rafale Victory Story

Another reason for caution is that India itself acknowledged that aircraft were lost during the conflict.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan later confirmed Indian aircraft losses while rejecting Pakistan's larger claim that six Indian fighters had been destroyed. Independent reporting also documented evidence of at least some Indian aircraft losses.

That makes the May 2025 conflict particularly important for defence analysts.

It demonstrated that even highly sophisticated fighters can be vulnerable when operating inside a complex BVR engagement.

The lesson is not that Rafale failed.

Nor is it that F-16 succeeded.

The lesson is that BVR warfare has become a contest of systems, information and tactics.

What This Means for India's Defence Modernisation

For India, the experience reinforces the importance of expanding the country's BVR missile and electronic-warfare capabilities.

India has already been developing the Astra family of air-to-air missiles and integrating them with platforms including the Su-30MKI and Tejas. India's longer-term fighter programmes also aim to improve indigenous sensor, electronic-warfare and weapons integration.

The post-Sindoor debate has also increased attention on India's future air-power requirements, including stealth aircraft and longer-range weapons.

An analysis published by ThePrint noted that India's post-Balakot BVR position evolved from Pakistan's earlier AMRAAM advantage to India's Meteor-equipped Rafale advantage, followed by Pakistan's acquisition of J-10C and PL-15 capabilities.

That cycle is likely to continue.

The Defence Investment Angle

For investors, the story has implications beyond fighter jets.

The modernisation race creates demand across multiple defence categories:

Missiles: Longer-range air-to-air and surface-to-air weapons are becoming increasingly important.

Radar: AESA radar and distributed sensor networks are central to detecting threats.

Electronic warfare: Jamming, decoys and electronic intelligence can determine whether a missile seeker gets a clean target.

Drones: Unmanned platforms can provide surveillance and strike capabilities without risking pilots.

Data networks: Connecting fighters, radars, satellites, AWACS and command centres is increasingly critical.

This means India's defence opportunity is much broader than individual fighter procurement.

Companies involved in missiles, radar, electronics, communications and unmanned systems could benefit from sustained military modernisation, although investors must evaluate each company's valuation, order book, execution and profitability separately.

What Investors and Defence Watchers Should Monitor

The most important developments to watch are not simply claims about how many aircraft each side lost.

Instead, attention should remain on:

  • India's Astra missile development
  • Longer-range BVR weapons
  • Rafale weapon integration
  • Tejas Mk1A and future fighter programmes
  • Electronic-warfare upgrades
  • AWACS and airborne surveillance
  • Counter-drone systems
  • Indigenous radar technology
  • India's AMCA programme
  • Pakistan's J-10C and PL-15 capabilities

These factors will shape the next stage of the South Asian air-power competition.

Conclusion

The claim that an ex-PAF officer confirmed Rafale's missile superiority forced Pakistan to completely ground its F-16s during Operation Sindoor goes further than the publicly verifiable evidence allows.

What can be established is more nuanced. Operation Sindoor highlighted the importance of BVR missiles, airborne early warning, electronic warfare and networked combat. India's Rafale-Meteor combination represented a major capability, but Pakistan's J-10C and PL-15 combination demonstrated that the opposing side also possessed modern long-range air-combat tools.

The real lesson from the 2025 conflict is therefore not simply Rafale versus F-16.

It is systems versus systems.

And in future air wars, the side that sees first, understands the battlespace faster and can launch an effective weapon before the opponent can respond may hold the decisive advantage.
