Pakistan's F-16 fleet is certainly ageing, particularly compared with newer fourth-generation and 4.5-generation fighters. But there is no reliable evidence that the aircraft were simply left out of the conflict because they were technologically incapable of fighting India. In fact, Pakistan said after the confrontation that its F-16s were not flown during the May 7–10 fighting, while Indian officials later said several parked F-16s were damaged on the ground.
The bigger story is the changing composition of Pakistan's air force — and the growing importance of Chinese-made fighters, long-range missiles, air defence and networked warfare.
Pakistan's F-16s Are Old, But “Obsolete” Is Too Simple
The F-16 Fighting Falcon first entered service decades ago, but age alone does not make every aircraft ineffective.
Pakistan operates different generations of F-16s, including older Block 15 aircraft and newer Block 52 variants. Some aircraft have also received upgrades over their service lives.

Pakistan's deputy prime minister later said U.S. officials had confirmed to Islamabad that Pakistani F-16s had neither been flown nor shot down during the May confrontation. That claim came from Pakistan and has not been independently established as a complete account of every operational movement.
India subsequently offered a different picture.
In August 2025, Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh said Pakistani aircraft had been destroyed during Operation Sindoor and that some parked F-16s were damaged at the Jacobabad airbase. He did not say those F-16s had been destroyed in air-to-air combat.

The statement that Pakistan's U.S.-supplied F-16s were too obsolete to fight India in 2025 is more dramatic than the evidence supports.
The better interpretation is that Pakistan's F-16 fleet is ageing and no longer represents the country's newest high-end fighter capability. During the May 2025 conflict, Pakistan's Chinese-made J-10C received far more attention, while Pakistan said its F-16s were not flown. India later said some F-16s were damaged while parked.
What matters strategically is the direction of travel.
