Gold Futures Hit ₹1.63 Lakh on Strong Spot Demand

Gold Futures Jump to ₹1.63 Lakh on Firm Spot Demand: What Is Driving the Rally?

Gold futures jumped to around ₹1.63 lakh per 10 grams on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) as firm spot demand and fresh positions from market participants supported prices. The October gold contract rose ₹1,283, or 0.79%, to ₹1,63,721 per 10 grams on August 24, according to market data reported by PTI.

The move comes as gold prices continue to find support from a combination of strong buying interest, a softer US dollar, lower bond yields and renewed demand for the precious metal as a safe-haven asset.

But the latest rally is not simply a story of physical demand. Futures positioning, global monetary-policy expectations and geopolitical uncertainty are also playing an important role.

For investors and traders tracking the gold futures price today, the bigger question is whether the current momentum can continue or whether gold is becoming vulnerable to a near-term correction.

Gold Futures Rise to ₹1,63,721 on MCX

On August 24, the October gold futures contract on MCX gained ₹1,283, or 0.79%, to ₹1,63,721 per 10 grams. Trading volume stood at 3,424 lots. The rise was attributed to fresh positions created by participants alongside firm spot demand.

The move also followed strength in international markets. Gold futures in New York were reported to be up around 0.99% at $4,648.78 per ounce during the session.

The MCX is particularly important for Indian investors because its gold contracts provide a domestic benchmark for gold derivatives and incorporate global bullion prices along with currency and local-market factors.

Why Is Gold Rising?

Several forces are working together to support gold prices.

1. Firm Spot Demand

The immediate trigger cited for the latest move was firm demand in the spot market.

When buyers are willing to purchase physical gold at higher prices, it can provide underlying support to futures markets. Traders may also interpret stronger spot activity as a sign that the rally has broader participation rather than being driven exclusively by short-term speculation.

However, spot demand and futures positioning can behave differently, so investors should not assume that one automatically guarantees the other.

2. Fresh Positions in Futures

The latest MCX move was also accompanied by fresh positions from market participants. PTI reported that the creation of new positions contributed to the rise in gold futures.

This matters because futures prices can move sharply when traders build bullish positions.

For beginners, a fresh position broadly means traders are entering new futures contracts rather than merely closing existing trades. A sustained increase in prices alongside rising participation can indicate stronger market conviction, although it can also increase volatility.

The Dollar Is Another Major Factor

Gold's global price is quoted in US dollars, making currency movements an important driver.

A weaker dollar generally makes gold relatively cheaper for buyers using other currencies and can therefore support international demand.

Recent gold strength has coincided with a weaker US dollar and lower US Treasury yields. Reuters reported that gold reached a more than three-month high on August 24, with the rally supported by technical momentum and a softer dollar.

On August 25, however, spot gold pulled back slightly after reaching that high. Reuters reported spot gold down 0.2% at $4,640.39 per ounce, while US gold futures were steady around $4,696.

This shows why investors should distinguish between the broader bullish trend and day-to-day price movements.

Lower Bond Yields Are Supporting Gold

Gold does not generate interest income.

That makes the opportunity cost of holding gold particularly important. When bond yields decline, the relative disadvantage of holding a non-yielding asset can become smaller.

Recent declines in US Treasury yields have therefore helped improve gold's appeal.

Reuters reported that gold's latest rally was helped by expectations and developments around US Treasury bond buybacks, which contributed to lower yields and a weaker dollar.

This is an important macroeconomic factor to watch because a reversal in bond yields could put pressure on gold even if physical demand remains reasonably strong.

Gold's Global Rally Has Gained Momentum

The latest MCX move is part of a broader international rally.

On August 24, gold climbed above $4,680 per ounce intraday before settling around $4,639.49, according to Reuters. December gold futures closed at $4,697.80.

Comex gold had also gained for several consecutive sessions, reflecting renewed investor interest in bullion.

Gold-backed ETFs have also attracted significant inflows. Reuters reported that gold-backed ETFs recorded their largest inflows in 10 months, with 46.7 metric tonnes worth around $6.4 billion entering funds, particularly in North America and Europe.

That kind of investment demand can become an important source of support if it continues.

What Does This Mean for Indian Gold Prices?

A rise in MCX futures can influence the domestic gold market, although the retail price paid by consumers will not necessarily move by exactly the same amount.

Indian gold prices are influenced by several variables, including:

  • International gold prices
  • USD/INR exchange rate
  • Import-related costs
  • Domestic demand
  • Taxes and duties
  • Local bullion-market conditions
  • Jewellery demand

This means a stronger global gold price combined with a weaker rupee can create additional upward pressure on domestic gold prices.

The opposite is also possible.

If international gold falls while the rupee strengthens, the impact on Indian prices could be comparatively smaller.

Is the Gold Rally Sustainable?

The medium-term backdrop remains supportive, but investors should not confuse a strong trend with a one-way market.

Reuters reported that gold remained well supported but also highlighted the risk that higher interest rates could limit further gains because gold is a non-yielding asset.

This creates an important balancing act.

Factors that could support gold

  • Continued weakness in the US dollar
  • Lower bond yields
  • Strong ETF inflows
  • Central-bank demand
  • Geopolitical uncertainty
  • Inflation and fiscal concerns
  • Continued physical demand

Factors that could pressure gold

  • Higher-for-longer interest rates
  • A stronger US dollar
  • Rising Treasury yields
  • Profit-taking after the rally
  • Weakening investment demand
  • A reduction in geopolitical risk

The next major market signals are likely to come from US economic data and Federal Reserve policy expectations.

US Inflation Data and Fed Signals Could Be Crucial

Markets are now watching upcoming US inflation data and Federal Reserve communication for clues about the future direction of interest rates.

Reuters noted that investors were awaiting US inflation data and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole conference for indications about monetary policy.

If upcoming data reinforces expectations of easier monetary policy, gold could receive additional support.

If inflation proves persistent and markets begin pricing in higher rates, gold could face renewed pressure.

This is why the next phase of the rally may depend as much on macroeconomic data as on physical gold demand.

What Should Gold Investors Watch Now?

Investors and traders tracking the gold futures price should focus on a combination of technical and fundamental indicators rather than a single price level.

Key factors include:

  1. MCX gold futures positioning — rising prices accompanied by fresh positions can signal strong participation.
  2. US dollar movement — sustained dollar weakness would generally support gold.
  3. US Treasury yields — a sharp rise could create headwinds.
  4. ETF flows — continued inflows would indicate strong investment demand.
  5. US inflation data — important for interest-rate expectations.
  6. Federal Reserve signals — monetary-policy guidance can quickly change bullion sentiment.
  7. Geopolitical developments — heightened uncertainty can increase safe-haven demand.
  8. Indian physical demand — especially as the festive and wedding seasons approach.

Gold Futures at ₹1.63 Lakh: Key Takeaway

The rise in gold futures to ₹1.63 lakh per 10 grams reflects a combination of firm spot demand, fresh futures positions and supportive global conditions. The October MCX contract reached ₹1,63,721 on August 24, while international gold also climbed to multi-month highs.

However, the rally is entering a phase where macroeconomic factors could become increasingly important. A weaker dollar, lower bond yields and continued investor demand remain supportive, while higher interest rates or a stronger dollar could trigger volatility.

For Indian investors, the key takeaway is simple: gold's momentum remains strong, but the next major move will depend on whether global investment demand and favourable monetary conditions can keep pace with the sharp rise already seen in prices.
