Fastest Trains in India: 7 Trains That Rival Vande Bharat and Why Global Railways Are Watching India



India’s railway story is changing rapidly. Vande Bharat Express may be the face of this transformation, but it is not the only train pushing Indian Railways toward faster inter-city travel.

From Gatimaan Express and Tejas Express to upgraded Rajdhani and Shatabdi services, several trains are already capable of high speeds on suitable sections of the Indian network. At the same time, Indian Railways is developing the next generation of trainsets with a design speed of 220 kmph, while work is underway to make Vande Bharat suitable for export markets.

That combination explains why India's railway technology is attracting increasing international attention.

There is, however, an important distinction between design speed, maximum permissible speed and actual average speed. A train designed for 180 or 200 kmph does not necessarily operate at that speed throughout its journey. Track geometry, signalling, curves, congestion, station stops and safety restrictions determine the speed passengers actually experience.

Vande Bharat Is Still India's Speed Benchmark

The Vande Bharat Express remains the country's most prominent indigenous semi-high-speed train.

Its trainsets have a design speed of 180 kmph, while suitable sections of the network permit operations at up to 160 kmph. Vande Bharat has also demonstrated 180 kmph during trials.

What makes it different from older locomotive-hauled trains is its distributed traction system. Instead of relying on a separate locomotive at the front, traction equipment is distributed through the trainset.

That allows faster acceleration and braking, which can reduce journey times even when the maximum line speed remains unchanged.

Demand has also been strong. Vande Bharat carried approximately 3.98 crore passengers in FY 2025-26, up from 2.97 crore a year earlier—a rise of nearly 34%.

But several other trains deserve attention.

1. Gatimaan Express: The Pioneer of India's Semi-High-Speed Era

Before Vande Bharat became synonymous with fast Indian trains, there was Gatimaan Express.

Introduced in 2016, Gatimaan became India's first semi-high-speed passenger service. Its maximum permissible speed reaches 160 kmph on suitable sections, particularly on the Delhi–Agra corridor.

Gatimaan demonstrated that Indian Railways could operate passenger services at speeds substantially above the traditional 110–130 kmph range.

Its significance today is therefore larger than its passenger numbers.

It was a proof of concept for the infrastructure, signalling and rolling-stock upgrades that later helped create the environment for Vande Bharat.

2. Tejas Express: Designed for Much More Than Today's Speed

Tejas Express is another important name in India's semi-high-speed railway development.

Some Tejas trainsets have a design capability of up to 200 kmph, although actual permitted operating speeds are lower because of track and operational constraints.

This distinction is crucial.

A train's engineering capability does not automatically translate into commercial operating speed. India's railway network has thousands of kilometres of track built for different operating conditions, and increasing speeds requires corresponding upgrades in track, signalling, level crossings and safety systems.

Still, Tejas represents India's attempt to combine higher-speed travel with premium passenger amenities.

3. Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani: An Old Name That Still Matters

The Rajdhani Express may look less futuristic than Vande Bharat, but it remains one of India's most important premium long-distance trains.

The Mumbai Central–New Delhi Rajdhani has historically been among the faster Rajdhani services, with upgraded Tejas-style coaches and higher permissible speeds on suitable sections.

The larger significance of Rajdhani is its role in India's long-distance passenger network.

Vande Bharat initially focused heavily on daytime inter-city journeys. Rajdhani, by contrast, demonstrated for decades that passengers were willing to pay for faster, premium overnight connectivity.

That experience is now relevant to Vande Bharat Sleeper.

4. Bhopal Shatabdi: The Classic Speed Leader

The Shatabdi Express was one of India's earliest premium daytime train concepts and continues to be associated with fast inter-city travel.

The New Delhi–Rani Kamalapati Shatabdi has a maximum permissible speed of around 150 kmph on relevant sections, although its overall journey average is much lower.

The important lesson from Shatabdi is that speed alone does not determine travel time.

A train may briefly reach 150 kmph, but its average speed depends on stops, curves, acceleration and the condition of the route.

This is precisely why newer trainsets such as Vande Bharat can offer meaningful time savings without necessarily operating at their maximum speed throughout the journey.

5. New Delhi–Kanpur Shatabdi: High Average-Speed Performance

The New Delhi–Kanpur Shatabdi is another notable performer.

Railway speed data compiled by IRFCA has historically placed the service among India's fastest trains by average journey speed, with the 12034 service listed at about 89.6 kmph average speed over its route.

That figure may sound modest compared with a headline maximum speed of 160 or 180 kmph.

But average speed is arguably more useful to passengers.

A train that spends less time waiting, accelerates quickly and maintains a high speed over long sections can produce a faster end-to-end journey even if its headline top speed is lower.

6. Mumbai–Delhi and Other Rajdhani Services

Rajdhani is not one single train but a family of premium long-distance services connecting Delhi with major cities.

Several Rajdhani routes have remained among India's faster conventional passenger services because they receive priority and operate on important trunk routes.

The Mumbai Central–New Delhi Rajdhani, Mumbai CSMT–Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani and New Delhi–Howrah Rajdhani are examples of services that have historically ranked strongly on average journey speed.

Their future importance could actually increase as India's main railway corridors become faster.

Better tracks and signalling benefit both older premium services and newer trainsets.

7. Vande Bharat Sleeper: The Next Big Challenge to Traditional Premium Trains

The most important newcomer is arguably not another daytime train at all.

It is Vande Bharat Sleeper.

The sleeper version extends the Vande Bharat platform into long-distance overnight travel. The first service was launched in January 2026 on the Howrah–Guwahati route, opening a new segment for the train family.

The government has reported strong early demand. The sleeper service carried more than 1.21 lakh passengers across 119 trips in its first three months, with occupancy above 100% on the relevant measure.

This matters because the sleeper market is much larger than daytime chair-car travel.

If Vande Bharat Sleeper can combine shorter journey times with modern accommodation, it could increasingly compete with conventional Rajdhani and other premium overnight services.

Why Is the World Looking at India?

The international interest is not simply about how fast Vande Bharat can run.

It is about cost, manufacturing capability and scalability.

India is developing a railway manufacturing ecosystem that can produce modern trainsets domestically. The next opportunity is to sell that capability abroad.

RITES and Indian Railways are working on a standard-gauge version of Vande Bharat intended for export markets, because standard gauge is used by most railway networks worldwide while India's domestic network predominantly uses broad gauge. Reports have identified interest from countries including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, as well as opportunities in Africa and Latin America.

This could be strategically important.

Instead of India simply importing railway technology, domestic manufacturers and railway PSUs could increasingly compete for international rolling-stock projects.

For companies such as RITES and other railway suppliers, successful exports could potentially create an additional market beyond India's massive domestic railway programme.

The Next Target: 220 Kmph

India's railway ambitions are also moving beyond Vande Bharat's current design speed.

Indian Railways has approved plans for two new train types with a design speed of 220 kmph, with production targeted for the coming years.

This is significant because it suggests that Vande Bharat is being treated as a platform rather than an endpoint.

The progression could look something like this:

Conventional express → premium Rajdhani/Shatabdi → Vande Bharat → 220 kmph next-generation trainsets → dedicated high-speed rail.

The last category is fundamentally different. India's Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail project is being built around Japanese Shinkansen technology and is intended to operate at much higher speeds than conventional Indian railway corridors.

So India is effectively developing several layers of faster rail rather than relying on one train.

What This Means for Railway Stocks and Businesses

For investors, the most interesting part may be the ecosystem surrounding these trains.

More modern trainsets can create demand for:

  • Train manufacturing

  • Railway components

  • Propulsion systems

  • Braking equipment

  • Signalling

  • Electrification

  • Maintenance

  • Railway electronics

  • Track upgrades

  • Station infrastructure

The opportunity is potentially significant, but investors should avoid treating every railway company as an automatic beneficiary.

The key variables remain order inflows, execution, margins, working capital, competition and the sustainability of government railway capital expenditure.

A large railway announcement does not automatically translate into proportional profits for every listed supplier.

Why India Could Become More Important in Global Rail Manufacturing

The biggest development to watch may therefore be India's transition from railway technology consumer to railway technology exporter.

The country has a huge domestic market, allowing manufacturers to develop products at scale before attempting international expansion.

That creates a potential advantage: domestic demand can help companies build manufacturing capacity, while export markets can eventually broaden the revenue base.

The Vande Bharat platform is becoming the most visible example of that strategy.

But the real test will come when Indian-built trainsets compete against established international suppliers on price, reliability, certification and lifecycle cost.

The Bottom Line

Vande Bharat has changed the perception of speed on India's conventional railway network, but it did not emerge in isolation.

Gatimaan, Tejas, Rajdhani and Shatabdi services laid important foundations, while Vande Bharat has pushed trainset technology, passenger expectations and domestic manufacturing to another level.

Now the ambition is moving further—with Vande Bharat Sleeper, planned 220 kmph trainsets and potential exports to international markets.

That is why global interest in Indian railway technology is growing.

The real story is no longer simply “How fast can an Indian train run?”

It is whether India can build a competitive railway manufacturing ecosystem capable of supplying fast, reliable and cost-effective trains both at home and abroad.

For investors, the next milestones to watch are new trainset orders, export contracts, manufacturing capacity, railway capex and the rollout of 220 kmph platforms.
