Bihar New Train: Bhagalpur–Ahmedabad Amrit Bharat Express to Boost Gujarat Connectivity

Bihar is set to get another important long-distance rail connection, with the Bhagalpur–Ahmedabad Amrit Bharat Express planned to connect eastern Bihar directly with Gujarat. The service is being developed as an extension of the existing Patna–Ahmedabad Amrit Bharat Express and is expected to provide a direct rail link for passengers travelling between Bhagalpur and Ahmedabad.

The proposed train is particularly significant for passengers from Bhagalpur, Munger and nearby areas who currently have limited direct options towards Gujarat. The journey is expected to take around 36 hours, while the service is planned to operate once a week.

However, passengers should note that the final commencement date and reservation details depend on the Railway Board's formal operational announcement. Reports published in June said the operational proposal and timetable had moved forward, with final approval still being awaited.

Bhagalpur–Ahmedabad Amrit Bharat Express: What We Know

The proposed service is essentially an extension of the existing Patna–Ahmedabad Amrit Bharat Express to Bhagalpur.

According to reports, Eastern Railway and Western Railway have reached agreement on the proposed extension, while the Railway Board is expected to announce the final operating date. A June 18 communication from Eastern Railway's Chief Passenger Transportation Manager to Western Railway reportedly included the proposal to extend the service and add commercial stops between Kiul and Bhagalpur.

This means the project has progressed beyond an initial demand for a new train, although passengers should still distinguish between railway planning/approval and a formally announced service available for booking.

When Could the New Train Start?

Reports have indicated that the service could begin around November 2026. Another report said the operational report and timetable had already been sent to the Railway Board for final approval.

The proposed schedule currently circulating is:

DirectionProposed DayDepartureArrival
Ahmedabad → BhagalpurWednesdayAround 6:30 PMFriday morning
Bhagalpur → AhmedabadFridayAround 4:30 PMSunday morning

One published proposal gives an Ahmedabad departure of 6:30 PM on Wednesday and arrival at Bhagalpur around 6:40 AM on Friday. The return service is proposed to leave Bhagalpur on Friday afternoon.

These timings should be considered provisional until Indian Railways publishes the final timetable.

Around 36 Hours From Gujarat to Eastern Bihar

The proposed service is expected to cover the Ahmedabad–Bhagalpur journey in roughly 36 hours.

That is important for passengers because the route covers more than 2,000 kilometres and connects two economically significant parts of India.

For workers travelling from Bihar to Gujarat, students travelling to cities such as Kota, traders and families visiting relatives, a direct train can eliminate the need for multiple connections.

The benefit is not simply saving a few hours. A direct service also means fewer changes of trains, less dependence on connecting services and easier luggage management on a long-distance journey.

Proposed Route and Important Stops

The train is expected to connect Bhagalpur with Ahmedabad through a route covering major stations in Bihar and western India.

In Bihar, the proposed extension includes important stops around the Kiul–Bhagalpur section, including:

  • Kiul
  • Abhaipur
  • Jamalpur
  • Sultanganj
  • Bhagalpur

Reports have also indicated connections through Patna and onward towards western India, including the Kota region.

The exact commercial stoppages, however, should be checked against the final railway timetable once the service is formally notified.

Why This Train Matters for Bihar

The biggest impact could be felt in eastern Bihar, particularly around Bhagalpur and Munger.

Ahmedabad is a major industrial and commercial centre, and Gujarat attracts workers, students, traders and businesses from across India. A direct Bhagalpur connection could therefore improve mobility between eastern Bihar and western India.

For Munger and nearby districts, stops such as Jamalpur and Abhaipur could make the service considerably more accessible.

The proposed route is also relevant for students. Connectivity towards Kota, a major education hub, could provide another rail option for students and families from Bihar travelling to Rajasthan.

In this sense, the train is not only a passenger-service development. Better connectivity can support employment mobility, education and regional trade.

Bhagalpur Could Get Its First Direct Ahmedabad Connection

One of the most significant aspects of the proposal is that it would give Bhagalpur a direct rail connection to Ahmedabad.

Reports have described the proposed extension as a major connectivity improvement because passengers from Bhagalpur currently have to depend on alternative services or connections for Gujarat-bound journeys.

For a city with a large surrounding catchment area, direct connectivity to a major industrial centre can make a meaningful difference to travel convenience.

The same logic applies to the wider Anga and Munger regions, where passengers can potentially access the service through connecting stations along the proposed route.

Railway Infrastructure Work Is Also Important

A long-distance terminating service needs facilities for handling and maintaining its rake.

Reports have said that an approximately 800-metre shunting line is being developed at Bhagalpur to support rake maintenance. The work was expected to be ready around August or September 2026, according to a June report.

This infrastructure is an important part of the proposed expansion.

It also explains why the start date should not be assumed solely from media reports. Train operations depend on several elements, including railway-board approval, infrastructure readiness, crew arrangements, rake availability and the final timetable.

What About Ticket Booking?

Passengers waiting to book the new train should be careful with unofficial announcements.

The train must first receive its final operational notification and be loaded into the railway reservation system. Only then will passengers be able to see the actual train number, journey dates, classes, fares and seat availability through the official booking system.

Therefore, until the official reservation schedule is published, claims about a specific booking opening date should be treated cautiously.

Once reservations open, passengers will be able to search the service using stations such as Bhagalpur (BGP) and Ahmedabad Junction (ADI), subject to the final train configuration.

What Passengers Should Watch Next

The next important announcements are likely to involve:

  • Final Railway Board approval
  • Official launch date
  • Confirmed train numbers
  • Final route and stoppages
  • Coach composition
  • Fare structure
  • IRCTC reservation opening
  • First commercial run
  • Final arrival and departure timings

The difference between a proposed schedule and a notified railway timetable is important. Until Indian Railways officially confirms the details, passengers should not book travel based solely on proposed timings circulating online.

Bihar New Train: What It Means for Passengers

The proposed Bhagalpur–Ahmedabad Amrit Bharat Express could become an important addition to Bihar's long-distance rail network. With an expected journey of around 36 hours and weekly operation, the service would provide eastern Bihar with a direct connection to Ahmedabad and improve access towards Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The project has already progressed through inter-zonal coordination and operational planning, but the final public launch and booking details remain the key milestones for passengers.

For travellers, the biggest advantage will be simplicity: one direct train instead of relying on multiple connections. The next thing to watch is the official Railway Board announcement confirming when passengers can actually board and book the service.
