145 Kmph Freight Train: India’s Vande Bharat Cargo Could Change Railway Logistics
India’s railway network is preparing for a major shift in freight transportation. The country’s first Vande Bharat Freight EMU has reached 145 kmph during technical trials, bringing Indian Railways closer to a dedicated high-speed cargo service for time-sensitive shipments.
But there is an important distinction behind the headline: these are trial speeds, not yet regular commercial freight operations. The 16-coach prototype began testing on July 29, 2026, on the Kota–Nagda–Sawai Madhopur section in Rajasthan, with the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) conducting detailed evaluations.
If the testing and regulatory clearances are successful, the Vande Bharat Freight concept could eventually give Indian Railways a new weapon in the competition for high-value and time-sensitive logistics.
And that is where the real business story begins.
India’s First Vande Bharat Freight Train Hits 145 Kmph
The prototype is based on the Vande Bharat platform and has been developed by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai.
During its first day of trials, the train was tested at 120 kmph and 135 kmph on different sections before reaching a maximum of 145 kmph on its return journey to Kota. The trial programme is planned for roughly a month and includes multiple speed and safety tests.
The test schedule includes oscillation trials at 120, 130, 140 and 145 kmph, along with emergency braking-distance tests, coupler-force tests, curve-performance checks, traction and braking evaluations, regenerative-energy tests and signal and telecommunications interference checks.
At least two round trips are planned each day during the testing programme.
So, while the 145 kmph figure is impressive, it should currently be viewed as a technical trial milestone rather than a new nationwide operating speed for freight trains.
What Makes the Vande Bharat Freight EMU Different?
The prototype is not simply a conventional freight train pulled by a locomotive at higher speed.
It is a 16-coach Freight Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) designed specifically around faster cargo movement.

Coal, iron ore, cement and other bulk commodities can generally tolerate longer transportation times because their economics are primarily driven by volume and cost.
But consider pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, electronics, e-commerce parcels or temperature-sensitive products.
For these shipments, time has a monetary value.
A package that reaches a distribution centre several hours earlier can potentially move into the next stage of the supply chain sooner. For perishables, faster transportation can also reduce spoilage risk.
That is the market the Vande Bharat Freight EMU is targeting.
The railway's own officials have highlighted e-commerce, express parcels, cold-chain logistics and time-bound freight as potential applications.
The Timetable Advantage Could Be More Important Than 145 Kmph
The biggest change may not ultimately be the maximum speed.
It could be predictability.
Traditional freight trains share railway infrastructure with passenger services and other traffic. Their schedules and average speeds can therefore be affected by congestion, operational priorities and infrastructure constraints.
A high-speed freight service designed around scheduled, time-sensitive cargo could offer logistics companies something extremely valuable: a more predictable arrival window.
This matters for modern supply chains.
An e-commerce company does not only want a cheap transportation option. It wants to know when inventory will reach a fulfilment centre.
Similarly, a pharmaceutical company may value controlled temperature and reliable delivery time more than simply paying the lowest freight rate.
If Indian Railways can combine speed with dependable schedules, it could make rail freight more attractive for categories that currently rely heavily on road transport.
Superfast Passenger Trains Are Not Being “Defeated”
The viral framing that a freight train has now made superfast passenger trains irrelevant would be misleading.
A passenger train's operating speed depends on its route, signalling, stops, track condition and timetable. Likewise, the Vande Bharat Freight train's 145 kmph achievement occurred during a controlled technical trial.
Indian Railways has not announced that ordinary freight trains across the country will suddenly begin running at 145 kmph.
In fact, the government has been progressively speeding up passenger services through timetable changes. Under the 2026 timetable, Indian Railways said 549 trains were sped up, alongside new trains, extensions and frequency changes.
The more accurate interpretation is that India is developing a new category of high-speed, specialised freight transportation.
The 397-Tonne Payload Is Also Important
Speed alone does not make a freight train commercially attractive.
It needs to carry enough cargo to make each journey economically viable.
The Vande Bharat Freight prototype has a payload capacity of more than 397 tonnes, according to reports based on railway information.
That creates an interesting combination:
Higher speed + specialised cargo handling + refrigeration + scheduled movement.
The model is therefore closer to an express logistics service on rails than a traditional bulk freight train.
If Indian Railways can maintain high utilisation, the concept could potentially create a new premium freight segment.
E-Commerce Could Be One of the Biggest Beneficiaries
India's e-commerce market has created enormous demand for faster movement of parcels between major distribution hubs.
Road transportation currently provides flexibility because trucks can operate directly from warehouse to warehouse.
Rail has traditionally had an advantage in moving large volumes over long distances, but time and last-mile connectivity can reduce its appeal for smaller, high-value shipments.
A specialised freight EMU could narrow that gap.
The combination of fast rail movement and road-based last-mile delivery could create a more integrated logistics chain.
For example, cargo could travel rapidly between two major cities by rail and then be transferred to local delivery networks.
That could become particularly useful for companies moving large numbers of parcels between regional fulfilment centres.
Cold-Chain Logistics Could Be Another Big Opportunity
The refrigerated facilities on the prototype are particularly significant.
India's food, pharmaceutical and healthcare supply chains increasingly require temperature-controlled transportation.
A fast refrigerated rail service could potentially reduce transit time while maintaining controlled conditions for sensitive cargo.
This does not mean the Vande Bharat Freight train will immediately replace refrigerated trucks.
Road logistics still has a major advantage in door-to-door flexibility.
But for predictable long-distance routes, a faster rail option could become competitive.
What This Means for Railway Stocks
The Vande Bharat Freight programme is not just a story about Indian Railways.
It potentially expands opportunities across India's railway manufacturing and logistics ecosystem.

The 145 kmph Vande Bharat Freight trial is an important first step in that direction.
But the real breakthrough will come only if the train moves from successful testing to commercially viable, scheduled operations.
For now, the headline should therefore be read carefully: India has demonstrated that a Vande Bharat-based freight train can touch 145 kmph in trials. The bigger question is whether that speed can be converted into a profitable logistics business.
