Stock Market LIVE Updates, Sensex Today: Sensex Opens Higher Amid Mixed Global Cues
Indian equity markets opened higher on Friday, August 28, 2026, after two consecutive sessions of losses, but the early gains came against a mixed global backdrop. The market was taking cues from stronger US equities, firm technology stocks and a positive GIFT Nifty signal, while investors remained cautious ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium.
The previous session had been particularly volatile. The BSE Sensex fell 539.35 points, or 0.70%, to close at 76,933.59, while the Nifty 50 declined 116.90 points, or 0.48%, to 24,090.85. Selling in heavyweight stocks, including HDFC Bank, along with weakness in metals and banking stocks, weighed on sentiment.
Sensex, Nifty Open Higher
The positive opening on Friday marks an attempt by domestic equities to recover from Thursday's sharp decline. Before the opening bell, GIFT Nifty was trading around 24,245–24,265, indicating a positive start for the Nifty 50.
However, investors are unlikely to treat the opening gains as confirmation of a sustained reversal. The Nifty closed Thursday just above the important 24,000 level, making that zone an important near-term support area.
Technical analysts cited by Moneycontrol identified 24,200–24,300 as the immediate resistance zone for any rebound, with 24,400 considered a more important hurdle. On the downside, 24,000 and 23,800 remain key levels to watch.
Why Are Indian Markets Rising Today?
Several factors are influencing the opening mood.
Strong US Market Performance
Wall Street ended Thursday on a positive note, led by technology stocks after Nvidia delivered a strong earnings outlook.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.20% to 53,569.44, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.72% to 7,730.99. The Nasdaq Composite was the strongest performer, rising 1.57% to 26,541.35.
The strength in US technology stocks is supportive for Indian IT and technology-linked shares, although domestic factors remain important.
Nvidia Boosts AI Sentiment
Nvidia's earnings outlook helped revive optimism around the global artificial-intelligence investment cycle. Reuters reported that the company's projection of roughly 70% revenue growth through fiscal year-end January 2028 helped lift technology stocks globally.
For Indian investors, this could provide a short-term positive backdrop for large IT companies and technology suppliers. However, the impact may vary from stock to stock because Indian IT companies also remain sensitive to US technology spending, currency movements and global economic growth.
Asian Markets Remain Mixed
The Asian market picture is less convincing.
Japan's Nikkei was higher, while South Korea's Kospi and Hong Kong-linked indicators showed weaker or mixed trends. Investors were also watching the reaction to the latest technology earnings and awaiting further signals on US monetary policy.
This explains why Friday's Indian opening has a positive tone but lacks a clear global risk-on signal.
Fed Chair Speech in Focus
One of the biggest market events on Friday is Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium.
Investors are looking for clues about the future path of US interest rates. The US 10-year Treasury yield was around 4.68%, while the dollar remained relatively firm. Higher US bond yields can create pressure on emerging-market equities because they can make dollar-denominated assets relatively more attractive.
For Indian stocks, any unexpectedly hawkish signal from the Fed could limit gains during the session. Conversely, a more supportive view on future monetary easing could improve global risk appetite.
Crude Oil and Rupee Remain Important
Crude oil is another key variable for Indian markets.
Brent crude was trading around $89 a barrel, while WTI was around $83 a barrel, according to market reports. Oil prices have remained elevated because of geopolitical tensions and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz.
For India, expensive crude can increase the country's import bill and put pressure on inflation and the rupee. Oil-sensitive sectors such as aviation, paints and chemicals can also feel the impact through higher input costs.
The Indian rupee closed Thursday at around ₹95.55 against the US dollar, adding another risk factor for domestic investors.
HDFC Bank and Other Stocks in Focus
HDFC Bank remains one of the biggest stocks to watch after its sharp decline on Thursday.
Reuters reported that HDFC Bank shares fell around 2.2% to a 2.5-year low following reports related to a US class-action lawsuit involving alleged illegal payments and uncertainty surrounding CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan's tenure renewal.
Because HDFC Bank carries significant weight in benchmark indices, continued weakness in the stock could restrict gains in the Sensex and Nifty even if other sectors perform well.
Other stocks in focus on Friday include Wipro, Lenskart, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Ather Energy, Kotak Mahindra Bank and BPCL.
Key Levels for Nifty and Sensex
For traders, the Nifty's ability to sustain above 24,200 will be important after the opening bounce.
Nifty 50:
- Immediate support: 24,000
- Next support: 23,800
- Immediate resistance: 24,200–24,300
- Stronger resistance: 24,400
A sustained move above 24,400 could improve the short-term technical setup. Until then, the market may remain in a consolidation phase, according to technical analysis published by Moneycontrol.
For the Sensex, investors should focus less on the initial point gain and more on whether buying continues after the first hour of trading. Thursday's session demonstrated how quickly sentiment can reverse.
What Investors Should Watch Today
Friday's market action could be driven by five major factors:
- Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech
- US Treasury yields and the dollar
- Crude oil prices and Iran-related developments
- HDFC Bank and other heavyweight stocks
- Nifty's ability to hold the 24,000–24,200 zone
Foreign institutional investors turned sellers on Thursday, offloading about ₹298 crore of Indian equities. Domestic institutional investors, however, continued their buying streak, purchasing shares worth roughly ₹4,977 crore.
That institutional divergence is important. Strong domestic buying can cushion declines, but sustained foreign selling could continue to limit large-cap upside.
Investor Takeaway
The higher opening on August 28 offers some relief after Thursday's sell-off, but investors should be careful about interpreting the early strength as a confirmed trend reversal.
Global technology optimism, particularly after Nvidia's results, is supporting sentiment, while high US yields, elevated crude prices, geopolitical risks and weakness in heavyweight Indian stocks remain potential headwinds.
The key question for the session is whether the Sensex and Nifty can hold their opening gains and reclaim important resistance levels, rather than simply whether the market starts higher.
For investors, the 24,000 level on the Nifty and the performance of heavyweight stocks such as HDFC Bank will remain particularly important. A sustained recovery would require broader participation and improving global risk sentiment.
