Train Complaint: RailMadad, 139 & How to Complain

Dirty Toilet, Bad Food or No AC in Train? How to File a Complaint During Your Journey

A dirty toilet, poor-quality food, a malfunctioning AC or another service problem can quickly turn a comfortable train journey into a frustrating experience. But passengers do not necessarily have to wait until they reach their destination to complain.

Indian Railways’ RailMadad system allows passengers to register train and station complaints while they are travelling. Complaints can be submitted through the RailMadad website, app, SMS or the integrated helpline 139, and passengers can track the status of a registered grievance.

This means passengers facing issues such as dirty toilets, cleanliness problems, catering complaints, coach-related issues or other onboard service deficiencies have an official channel to seek assistance during the journey.

What Is RailMadad?

RailMadad is Indian Railways' grievance-redressal platform for passengers. The system covers complaints relating to trains and stations and provides a mechanism to track complaints and receive feedback after resolution.

The official RailMadad portal currently provides separate options for Train Complaints and Station Complaints.

For a train complaint, passengers may be asked to provide details such as their mobile number, train number, PNR, journey information, coach and berth or seat number, along with a description of the problem. The current complaint form also allows supporting files such as images or videos to be uploaded within the prescribed file-size limits.

How to Complain About a Dirty Train Toilet

A dirty or unhygienic toilet is one of the most common problems passengers can encounter during a long-distance journey.

Instead of simply informing another passenger or waiting for the next station, a traveller can register a complaint through RailMadad.

Step 1: Open RailMadad

Visit the official RailMadad portal and choose the train complaint option.

Step 2: Enter Journey Details

Passengers can provide their PNR and other journey information. The complaint system uses journey details to help route the grievance to the appropriate railway authorities.

Step 3: Describe the Problem Clearly

Instead of writing only "toilet dirty", mention useful details such as:

  • Coach number

  • Toilet location, if relevant

  • Nature of the cleanliness problem

  • Whether the issue is continuing

  • Any immediate assistance required

A photograph can also help document the problem, where appropriate.

Step 4: Submit and Track the Complaint

After registration, the complaint can be tracked through the available RailMadad channels. Indian Railways says passengers are informed when a complaint is resolved and can provide feedback on the resolution.

What If the Train Food Is Bad?

Food-related complaints can also be raised through the railway grievance system when the issue concerns train or railway catering services.

Passengers should preserve useful evidence where possible, such as the bill, order details, packaging or photographs of the food. This can make it easier to explain the complaint accurately.

For IRCTC eCatering orders, there is also a dedicated complaint mechanism. IRCTC's eCatering service says passengers unhappy with the quality of food or delivery can lodge a complaint through its official website, Food on Track app or by calling 1323, subject to the stated complaint window.

Passengers should therefore distinguish between an IRCTC eCatering order and food purchased from another source during the journey.

IRCTC also advises passengers to use authorised eCatering channels and warns about unauthorised food vendors and fraudulent ordering platforms.

AC Not Working? Report It While You Are Still on the Train

A malfunctioning AC, fan or other coach-related problem can be particularly uncomfortable during a long journey.

Rather than waiting until arrival, passengers can submit a train complaint through RailMadad with their coach and berth details.

The official complaint form specifically captures information such as train number, coach number and berth/seat number, making it easier to identify where the problem is occurring.

The key is to provide accurate information. A complaint such as "AC not working" is less useful than specifying the coach, berth area and nature of the problem.

You Can Also Use 139

Passengers who do not want to use the website or app can use the integrated railway helpline 139 for complaints.

According to the RailMadad FAQ, complaints can be lodged over the phone on 139. The system also supports SMS complaints by sending "MADAD" followed by the complaint text to 139.

Indian Railways' official material describes RailMadad as an integrated complaint-management system operating through multiple channels, including the 139 helpline.

The important point is that 139 should not be treated as a guarantee that every complaint will be fixed instantly. Railways says it makes efforts to resolve complaints at the earliest and allows passengers to track their status. The actual response time can depend on the nature of the problem and the availability of the concerned staff or service team.

What Information Should You Keep Ready?

Before registering a complaint, keeping a few details handy can make the process easier:

  • PNR number

  • Train number

  • Coach number

  • Seat or berth number

  • Boarding and destination stations

  • Description of the problem

  • Date of the incident

  • Photograph or video, if useful

The current RailMadad train complaint form asks for journey details and provides an option to upload supporting files.

Why Complaining During the Journey Matters

The biggest advantage of reporting a problem while the train is still running is that the railway administration has a better opportunity to act on the issue before the passenger reaches the destination.

For example, if a passenger reports a serious cleanliness problem in a coach while the train is travelling, the complaint can provide railway authorities with the coach and journey information needed to identify the affected service.

RailMadad's system is designed around this idea of connecting passenger grievances with the relevant railway authorities and allowing the passenger to monitor the complaint.

For passengers, this is more useful than simply posting a complaint after the journey has ended.

What Passengers Should Do

If you face a problem on a train, don't exaggerate the complaint or provide incorrect information. Report the issue factually and include the exact coach and berth details.

For serious security or medical emergencies, passengers should use the appropriate emergency assistance channels rather than treating the matter as an ordinary cleanliness or service complaint. The current RailMadad platform identifies 139 for security/medical assistance as well.

For routine service problems, RailMadad and 139 give passengers a direct official route to register and track their grievances.

The Bottom Line

A dirty toilet, poor food, broken AC or another onboard problem does not have to remain unresolved until the end of your train journey. Indian Railways' RailMadad platform allows passengers to raise train complaints while travelling, while 139 provides an additional complaint channel.

The most important thing is to report the issue with accurate journey details, clearly describe the problem and keep the complaint reference for tracking. For IRCTC eCatering orders, passengers can use the dedicated eCatering complaint process when applicable.
