Noida’s First Skywalk Opens on Raksha Bandhan: ₹33 Crore Link to Connect Sector 51 and 52 Metro Stations
Noida is set to get its first skywalk on Raksha Bandhan, making the interchange between Sector 51 and Sector 52 metro stations significantly easier for daily commuters. The approximately ₹33 crore air-conditioned skywalk will connect the Noida Metro Aqua Line at Sector 51 with the Delhi Metro Blue Line at Sector 52, replacing the difficult road-level transfer between the two stations.
The facility is scheduled to open to the public at 7 am on Friday, August 28, 2026, after construction delays spanning more than three years. The project includes travelators, lighting, railings and other commuter-safety features.
Why the Sector 51-52 Skywalk Matters
The biggest problem for passengers changing between the two metro corridors has been the gap between the stations.
Sector 51 serves the Aqua Line, operated by Noida Metro Rail Corporation, while Sector 52 is on the Blue Line of Delhi Metro. Although the stations are relatively close, passengers have traditionally had to walk outside and negotiate the road-level route to transfer between them.
According to reports, the existing walking route can stretch to more than 800 metres, while the new skywalk reduces the transfer distance to roughly 480 metres.
That difference could be particularly useful during Noida's summer heat, monsoon rains and busy office hours.
₹33 Crore Skywalk Comes With Travelators
The new Noida Sector 51-52 skywalk is approximately six metres wide and has been designed as an enclosed, air-conditioned pedestrian connection.
One of its most notable features is the installation of 10 travelators, placed at intervals along the route. Travelators are moving walkways that allow passengers to cover the distance without having to walk the entire stretch themselves.
The facility is expected to be particularly helpful for senior citizens, passengers with mobility difficulties and commuters carrying luggage or bags.
The skywalk also includes improved lighting and railings, while operational arrangements cover systems such as air-conditioning, CCTV, fire safety and travelators. A Noida Authority tender for annual operation and maintenance specifically lists these systems for the Sector 51-52 skywalk.
From 800 Metres of Road-Level Walking to a Covered Connection
For commuters, the benefit is not simply about reducing distance.
The current interchange requires passengers to leave one metro station and navigate an outdoor route before reaching the other station. Traffic, weather and pedestrian congestion can make the transfer uncomfortable.
The new skywalk creates a dedicated pedestrian corridor above ground.
That means a passenger arriving at Sector 51 can use the connection towards Sector 52 without having to undertake the same road-level journey. Similarly, Blue Line passengers can use the facility when transferring towards the Aqua Line.
This could make the two metro corridors function more like a practical interchange even though they remain separate metro lines.
Project Was Delayed for More Than Three Years
The opening comes after a lengthy construction process.
Work on the air-conditioned skywalk began in March 2023, with an original completion target of roughly one year. However, several technical and construction-related issues delayed the project and multiple deadlines were missed.
One major complication arose when an underground metro cable was discovered during excavation. The structural design consequently had to be changed from the initially planned single-pillar arrangement to a two-column support system.
There was also a problem involving a beam that obstructed access to the Sector 52 station. Officials have since removed the obstruction, allowing the facility to move towards opening.
Construction restrictions during winter imposed under National Green Tribunal-related measures also contributed to delays.
Why Raksha Bandhan Is Significant for the Opening
The timing of the opening gives the project an additional public significance.
After repeatedly missing earlier deadlines, the Noida Authority has chosen Raksha Bandhan for opening the facility to commuters. Recent reports said the skywalk was ready and would initially be opened for public use/trial before its formal inauguration arrangements.
The latest report confirms that the facility is scheduled to open to the public on Friday morning.
For commuters, however, the festival date is less important than what happens after the opening: whether the travelators, air-conditioning and other systems remain reliable during everyday peak-hour usage.
What the New Skywalk Means for Noida’s Public Transport
The project is relatively small compared with a new metro corridor, but its potential commuter impact is much larger than its physical size suggests.
Metro systems work best when passengers can transfer between corridors conveniently. Even a short gap between stations can discourage people from making an interchange if they have to walk through traffic or deal with uncomfortable weather.

- Lighting
- Passenger-care facilities
A tender for annual operation and maintenance indicates that these systems require dedicated manpower and servicing.
This matters because the travelators and air-conditioning are not merely decorative additions. They are central to the project's promise of making the transfer easier.
If the moving walkways frequently remain out of service or the air-conditioning is inadequate, commuters may not receive the full benefit of the ₹33 crore investment.
What Commuters Should Expect
Passengers using the new facility should see three major improvements.
First, shorter effective walking time. The route between the two stations becomes more direct.
Second, protection from weather. An enclosed and air-conditioned environment is particularly valuable during Noida's hot summers and monsoon season.
