₹10,000 SIP or ₹10 Lakh FD for Child Education: Which Can Build a Bigger Fund?
If the goal is to build a large corpus for a child's higher education, the choice between a ₹10,000 monthly SIP and a ₹10 lakh fixed deposit can produce very different results over 15 years.
At first glance, the ₹10 lakh FD looks far ahead because the entire amount is invested on day one. But a ₹10,000 SIP continues receiving fresh money every month, and long-term compounding can significantly change the outcome.
For a meaningful comparison, let us assume a 15-year investment horizon and use illustrative returns of 6.5% for the FD and 10% annualised for an equity-oriented mutual fund SIP. These are assumptions for calculation, not guaranteed returns. Mutual fund investments are market-linked, and SEBI requires mutual fund schemes to display their risk level through the Riskometer.
₹10 Lakh FD: How Much Could It Become in 15 Years?
Suppose the parent deposits ₹10 lakh in an FD and, purely for this calculation, the money compounds at 6.5% annually for 15 years.

This is only an illustration. An investor cannot assume that today's FD interest rate will remain unchanged for 15 years. If the FD matures earlier and is renewed, the applicable rate at renewal will determine the future return.
The major attraction of an FD is predictability. Unlike an equity mutual fund, its return is not directly exposed to daily stock-market fluctuations during the deposit tenure.
₹10,000 SIP: What Can It Become?
Now consider a parent who invests ₹10,000 every month through an SIP for 15 years.
The total amount actually contributed would be:
₹10,000 × 12 × 15 = ₹18 lakh
That is an important point. The SIP investor is putting ₹8 lakh more of their own money into the investment than the person making the ₹10 lakh lump-sum FD investment.

So, Who Has the Bigger Fund?
Under the assumptions above:
₹10 lakh FD at 6.5%: approximately ₹25.72 lakh
₹10,000 SIP at 10%: approximately ₹41.45 lakh
On these assumptions, the SIP produces a corpus about ₹15.73 lakh larger.
But there is a crucial detail that should not be missed.
The SIP investor contributed ₹18 lakh, while the FD investor contributed only ₹10 lakh.
Therefore, this is not a perfect comparison of the investment products. It is also a comparison of two different investment amounts and cash-flow patterns.
The SIP wins in the illustration because it combines regular contributions with a higher assumed rate of return.
What If the SIP Earns Only 8%?
This is where the calculation becomes more realistic from a planning perspective.
If the SIP earns an assumed 8% annualised return instead of 10%, the corpus would still be around ₹34.60 lakh after 15 years.
That remains higher than the approximately ₹25.72 lakh FD corpus in our 6.5% illustration.
However, the investor takes market risk to pursue that higher potential return.
An equity mutual fund's NAV can rise and fall with market conditions. SEBI notes that investment values in securities markets can fluctuate and that investors need to consider the risk associated with the investment.
The FD Has One Major Advantage
For a child's education goal, certainty can be extremely valuable.
Imagine the child is expected to start university in 15 years. If the money is kept in an FD, the investor generally has greater visibility into the interest structure applicable to the deposit.
An equity SIP does not provide that certainty.
The portfolio could be worth considerably more after 15 years—but it could also experience substantial declines during market downturns.
That makes the time horizon extremely important.
If the education expense is only two or three years away, taking substantial equity-market risk may be inappropriate for the money that must be available at that specific time. If the child is very young and the goal is 15 years away, the investor has more time to tolerate market volatility and plan the transition toward safer assets as the goal approaches.
Inflation Is the Hidden Problem for Education Planning
There is another factor parents should not ignore: education inflation.
A corpus of ₹25 lakh or ₹40 lakh may sound large today, but education costs are unlikely to remain at today's levels for the next 15 years.
For example, if a particular education expense costs ₹10 lakh today, assuming an illustrative 7% annual increase in that cost, it would become roughly ₹27.59 lakh after 15 years.
That is why simply asking, "Will I have ₹25 lakh?" is not enough.
The better question is:
"How much will my child's education actually cost when the money is needed?"

An SIP works differently from a lump-sum FD.

Putting the entire amount into an FD and comparing it with a ₹10,000 SIP is not necessarily the most efficient way to frame the decision.
The parent could instead evaluate a strategy based on:
- How much money is already available
- How much can be invested every month
- How many years remain until college
- Expected education costs
- Risk tolerance
- Emergency-fund requirements
- Tax implications
- How the portfolio will be shifted toward safer investments as the goal approaches
For a long-term education goal, the right answer may not be FD or SIP. A combination of different asset classes can sometimes be more appropriate, depending on the investor's circumstances.
What Happens During a Market Crash?
Suppose the SIP portfolio falls sharply after several years.
The value of the investment could temporarily decline, which can be uncomfortable for parents who are watching a specific education goal.
But a market decline does not automatically mean the long-term SIP has failed. Monthly contributions continue purchasing mutual-fund units at prevailing prices, provided the investor stays invested.
However, this is not a guarantee of recovery or profit. SEBI's Riskometer exists precisely because mutual-fund schemes carry different levels of investment risk.
This is also why parents should avoid choosing an investment solely because a historical return looks attractive.

A practical approach is to divide the planning process into stages.

Estimate the amount likely to be required rather than simply targeting an arbitrary corpus.
2. Start Investing Early
A longer investment period gives compounding more time to work.
3. Use Market-Linked Investments Only According to Risk Capacity
A long horizon can help, but it does not eliminate market risk.
4. Review the Plan Regularly
Income, education costs and investment performance can change.
5. Reduce Risk as the Goal Approaches
If the money is needed soon, protecting the accumulated corpus becomes increasingly important. A parent should not wait until the last moment to think about capital protection.
