Sambhal News: Around 350 farmers have taken part in a farmer workshop and monsoon sugarcane field day organised by DSM Sugar Mill, Rajpura, in Kanhaiya village under the Gawan area. The programme focused on scientific monsoon sugarcane cultivation, wider row spacing, lower seed requirements, intercropping and ways to improve farm returns.

The event is significant for local sugarcane growers because it moved beyond general advice and showcased a field-level example of how monsoon planting can be combined with intercropping to generate additional income.

What Happened in Sambhal?

DSM Sugar Mill, Rajpura organised the farmer meeting and monsoon sugarcane field day in Kanhaiya village, bringing together farmers from several villages in the surrounding area.

According to the report, experts explained techniques aimed at achieving higher production at lower cost, while also discussing intercropping as a way to generate additional income from the same field. Unit Head Upendra Kumar Tomar encouraged farmers to adopt timely planting and visit successful demonstration fields before adopting new practices.

One of the key recommendations discussed at the event was maintaining six feet between sugarcane rows. The wider spacing can leave room for suitable intercrops while also reducing the quantity of planting material required.

Why Six-Foot Row Spacing Matters

Traditional sugarcane cultivation can involve relatively close planting, but wider-row systems are increasingly being used in some sugarcane-based farming models.

The objective is not simply to leave more empty space between rows. A wider layout can provide room for intercrops and make certain field operations easier.

The Sambhal field demonstration is particularly useful because farmers were shown an example under local conditions rather than being given only theoretical instructions.

However, the performance of any planting system depends on variety, soil, rainfall, irrigation, plant population and subsequent crop management. Farmers should therefore treat the six-foot spacing discussed at the programme as a technique demonstrated under particular conditions, not a universal rule for every sugarcane field.

A Field Example Shows the Income Potential

The most notable part of the programme was the experience shared by senior general manager (cane) Iqbal Singh.

According to the report, sugarcane was planted on one acre on August 13, 2025, using six-foot row spacing and only 7.5 quintals of seed. Two rows of chilli were grown as an intercrop with the sugarcane. The reported income from chilli was around ₹1.50 lakh, followed by approximately ₹35,000 from onion cultivation.

The field also reportedly produced around 48 quintals of quality sugarcane seed, which could be used by the grower and supplied to other farmers.

The one-year-old crop was described as healthy, with around 10–12 canes emerging from each set. The programme also cited an estimated production potential of around 90–100 quintals per bigha under the technique.

These figures are best understood as a reported field example, not as a guaranteed return for farmers.

How Intercropping Can Change Sugarcane Economics

Sugarcane occupies farmland for a long period, meaning farmers may have an opportunity to generate additional income before the crop develops a dense canopy.

Intercropping uses the space between sugarcane rows for another crop. Depending on local conditions, suitable crops can include vegetables, pulses or oilseeds.

The Sambhal demonstration used chilli followed by onion. The reported additional income of about ₹1.85 lakh from these two crops illustrates why intercropping is attracting attention among sugarcane growers.

But farmers should distinguish gross additional income from profit. Revenue from an intercrop does not represent net earnings because seed, fertiliser, labour, irrigation, crop protection and harvesting expenses must be deducted.

The right comparison is therefore the additional profit generated after costs, not simply the value of the produce sold.

Why Monsoon Sugarcane Is Getting Attention

Monsoon planting can offer farmers a different way to establish sugarcane and utilise rainfall during the crop's early growth phase.

Scientific sugarcane cultivation generally requires attention to planting material, spacing, soil moisture, drainage, nutrition, weeds and disease management. Agricultural guidance also stresses the importance of quickly removing excess water from fields because prolonged waterlogging can damage the crop.

The Sambhal programme's emphasis on timely planting and field visits reflects a broader shift towards demonstration-based agricultural extension, where farmers can observe the results of a technique before adopting it.

Lower Seed Requirement Could Reduce an Important Cost

Another point highlighted at the Sambhal event was the relatively low quantity of seed used in the demonstration.

The reported figure was 7.5 quintals of seed per acre under six-foot row spacing.

Lower seed requirements can potentially reduce establishment costs, particularly when farmers use quality planting material.

  • Drainage: Remove excess water quickly after heavy rainfall.

  • Seed quality: Use healthy and recommended planting material.

  • Weed management: Early weed competition can affect crop establishment.

  • Intercrop economics: Calculate costs before selecting chilli, onion or another crop.

  • Disease and pest symptoms: Regular field inspection is important.

  • Nutrient management: Fertiliser application should be based on soil and crop requirements.

These factors will determine whether the technology works economically on an individual farm.

For the local sugar industry, improved farm productivity can have a wider business impact.

Higher and more stable cane production can strengthen the raw-material supply available to sugar mills. Better farmer economics can also encourage growers to remain committed to sugarcane cultivation.

However, one field demonstration or a single farmer workshop is not enough to establish a regional productivity trend.

The more important indicator will be whether the practices demonstrated in Kanhaiya are adopted by more farmers and produce consistent results across different soil and weather conditions.

Investor Perspective: Is This a Sugar Stock Trigger?

For stock-market investors, the Sambhal development should be viewed primarily as a regional agricultural productivity story, rather than an immediate trigger for sugar stocks.

The reported participation of around 350 farmers is meaningful from an extension and farmer-awareness perspective, but it is too early to conclude that the programme will materially change sugar production or earnings for the wider sugar industry.

Investors tracking sugar companies should instead watch broader indicators such as cane availability, sugar production, domestic prices, ethanol policy, inventory levels, export conditions and mill profitability.

The long-term significance of initiatives such as this would become greater if improved cultivation techniques are adopted on a much larger acreage and result in consistently higher cane availability.
