LPG connection booking for new domestic consumers remains on hold in India, with no official date announced yet for the restart of regular 14.2-kg LPG connections. The restriction has become a major concern for households shifting to LPG for the first time. While existing consumers can continue using their connections, people looking to obtain a fresh standard domestic LPG connection are still facing difficulties.
The key question, therefore, is simple: when will LPG connection booking reopen?
As of August 28, 2026, there is no confirmed nationwide reopening date. Recent reports indicate that the suspension could continue for some time, while the government and oil marketing companies focus on supply management and e-KYC verification.
Why Is New LPG Connection Booking Still Closed?
The suspension began during the severe LPG supply disruption triggered by the West Asia conflict earlier this year.
India imports a substantial share of its LPG requirement, making international shipping routes particularly important. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for energy shipments, and disruptions in the region created concerns about maintaining adequate LPG supplies for India's huge household consumer base.
During the crisis, the priority shifted toward existing LPG consumers.
Instead of adding new customers who would create additional recurring demand for cylinders, distributors were instructed to focus on supplying refills to households that already had LPG connections. The Petroleum Ministry has described the suspension as a temporary measure linked to the geopolitical situation.
This explains why a consumer may currently be able to refill an existing connection but still be unable to obtain a new 14.2-kg domestic connection.
When Will New LPG Connections Resume?
At present, there is no officially announced date for the reopening of normal new LPG connection bookings.
Recent reports published on August 27 said new 14.2-kg domestic connections were still not being issued and that consumers were being advised to wait while supply and verification measures continued.
Some reports have suggested that bookings could take several more months to reopen. However, consumers should treat such timelines as expectations rather than an official deadline because no confirmed restart date has been announced.
In other words, someone telling consumers that new LPG bookings will definitely start on a particular date should not be considered reliable unless the announcement comes from the government or the relevant oil marketing company.
e-KYC Is Also a Major Part of the Current Process
Another important development is the government's focus on LPG e-KYC.
The objective is to verify genuine consumers and identify duplicate, inactive or potentially fraudulent connections. The e-KYC exercise has become an important part of the broader effort to clean up the domestic LPG database while supplies remain under tighter management.
The latest reports indicate that oil marketing companies have set August 31, 2026, as the deadline for domestic LPG consumers in the current e-KYC exercise.
That does not mean new connections will automatically become available on September 1.
The two issues should not be confused. Completing e-KYC is primarily about verifying existing consumers; the reopening of new connections depends on the government's assessment of LPG supply and the wider distribution situation.
What Can Consumers Do If They Need LPG Now?
Consumers who urgently need cooking gas may have alternatives depending on availability in their area.
5-kg LPG cylinders
Smaller Free Trade LPG cylinders can be an option for consumers who do not currently have a standard domestic connection. Availability and pricing can vary by distributor and location.
10-kg composite cylinders
Oil companies have also been expanding smaller-cylinder options. IndianOil launched an express-delivery service for its 10-kg composite LPG cylinder in July 2026, offering another option while regular new domestic connections remain restricted.
These alternatives should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a normal 14.2-kg domestic connection. Consumers should check the applicable price, deposit, refill process and availability with an authorised distributor.
PNG where available
Households located in areas with an established piped natural gas network can also explore a PNG connection.
The government has recently approved a new incentive scheme to promote domestic PNG connections, with the scheme scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026.
The government is increasingly looking at PNG as another way to reduce pressure on LPG demand in areas where pipeline infrastructure is available.
Is LPG Supply Situation Improving?
There are signs that India has strengthened its supply position compared with the peak of the crisis.
The country has increased domestic LPG production and diversified imports. Recent reports indicate that US LPG supplies have become an increasingly important source as shipments from traditional Middle Eastern suppliers have faced disruptions.
At the same time, India is investing in infrastructure to improve the movement of LPG inside the country.

The official PMUY portal continues to provide information and an application facility for eligible beneficiaries. As of August 25, 2026, the scheme had recorded more than 105.68 million connections, while the latest 25-lakh extension had crossed 2.43 million connections.
Therefore, eligible households should check the official PMUY process rather than assuming that the general suspension applies identically to every government LPG programme.
However, consumers should still verify their eligibility and the actual availability of connections with the authorised distributor.
Will LPG Refill Booking Rules Change?
The suspension of new connections should not be confused with the rules for booking refills on an existing connection.
In March, the Petroleum Ministry clarified that reports claiming completely new refill timelines were incorrect. The government stated that the existing refill booking intervals remained 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas, irrespective of connection type.
Consumers should therefore rely on official updates from the Petroleum Ministry and their respective LPG company instead of social-media claims about sudden booking restrictions.
