Balrampur Sugarcane Crop Faces Red Rot Risk: Why Farmers Need to Act Early



The red rot disease in Balrampur sugarcane remains a serious crop-protection concern, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and prolonged waterlogging. Agricultural experts have described red rot as the “cancer of sugarcane” because severe infection can weaken and destroy affected cane, while contaminated planting material and soil can help the disease spread.

Balrampur is not new to the problem. A major Uttar Pradesh sugarcane disease survey covering 2020-21 recorded 1,760 hectares of red-rot-affected sugarcane in Balrampur, making it one of the state's six districts with the largest reported affected areas that year.

That historical experience explains why farmers are being urged to identify symptoms early, prevent water stagnation and increasingly move away from highly susceptible varieties.

Why Red Rot Is Called the “Cancer of Sugarcane”

Red rot is a fungal disease caused by Colletotrichum falcatum. It primarily affects the stalk and can significantly damage the crop when conditions are favourable.

The disease can be deceptive because early symptoms may appear simply as yellowing or drying leaves. The more characteristic signs become visible when an infected stalk is split lengthwise. Research on sugarcane diseases in Uttar Pradesh describes reddish internal tissue with white patches as a diagnostic symptom.

As the infection progresses, the upper leaves can turn yellow or orange-yellow and eventually dry. In severe cases, the entire plant may deteriorate.

The “cancer” comparison is therefore used to describe the destructive nature of the disease, not because red rot is medically related to cancer.

Balrampur Has Previously Seen Significant Red Rot Damage

The risk in Balrampur is supported by documented disease history rather than being a new theoretical concern.

A five-year Uttar Pradesh disease survey found severe red rot incidence in several districts, including Balrampur. In 2020-21, Balrampur had 1,760 hectares recorded as affected, behind Lakhimpur, Sitapur and ahead of several other major cane-growing districts.

The same research found that the highly popular Co 0238 variety was particularly vulnerable. Across Uttar Pradesh, red rot incidence on Co 0238 reached severe levels in several locations.

The problem was significant enough that Uttar Pradesh's sugarcane authorities subsequently pushed for replacement of susceptible varieties.

Why Co 0238 Became a Major Concern

Co 0238 became extremely popular because of its strong yield and sugar-recovery performance. But its widespread cultivation also increased the consequences when disease susceptibility emerged.

Research found that Co 0238's share of Uttar Pradesh's sugarcane area rose sharply from about 19.8% in 2015-16 to 86.7% in 2020-21.

Such concentration creates a vulnerability: if a widely cultivated variety becomes susceptible to a particular pathogen, disease can affect a very large area.

The experience has encouraged farmers and sugar mills to diversify varieties rather than depending excessively on a single high-performing cane variety.

Why Monsoon Conditions Matter

Rain itself does not automatically mean a red rot outbreak. The bigger concern is a combination of favourable weather, susceptible varieties, infected planting material and poor field drainage.

ICAR advisories specifically recommend avoiding water stagnation in sugarcane fields and removing affected plants, known as rouging, when red rot is detected.

This is especially relevant during the monsoon. Farmers should inspect low-lying portions of their fields after heavy rainfall because water can remain trapped there for longer than in better-drained areas.

A 2025 report also noted that agricultural scientists had advised Uttar Pradesh farmers to remain alert to red rot during periods of prolonged waterlogging.

Therefore, the current concern should be understood as a need for vigilance, rather than evidence that every sugarcane field in Balrampur is currently infected.

Symptoms Farmers Should Watch For

Farmers should regularly inspect their cane and look for unusual changes, especially in fields containing susceptible varieties.

Important warning signs include:

  • Yellowing or drying of leaves without an obvious nutritional explanation.

  • Weak or poorly developing cane clumps.

  • Drying of the top portion of the plant.

  • Reddish or purple discoloration on the stalk.

  • Red-coloured internal tissue when a suspicious stalk is split.

  • White patches appearing within the reddened tissue.

  • Disease appearing in clusters or patches within the field.

If symptoms are found, farmers should get the disease confirmed through local agricultural experts, sugar mills, Krishi Vigyan Kendras or relevant sugarcane research authorities rather than assuming every stalk discoloration is red rot.

Prevention Starts Before the Disease Appears

Red rot management is much easier when prevention begins before the disease becomes widespread.

Farmers should focus on four areas: healthy planting material, resistant varieties, field sanitation and drainage.

Using disease-free seed cane is particularly important because infected planting material can introduce the pathogen into new fields.

Farmers should also remove and properly dispose of clearly infected plants where recommended. Leaving diseased cane in the field can increase the risk of further spread.

ICAR's crop advisory specifically recommends rouging affected plants and preventing water stagnation as measures against red rot.

Chemical or biological treatments should not be selected solely on the basis of social-media recommendations. Farmers should follow locally approved recommendations and seek professional diagnosis before applying crop-protection products.

New Varieties Are Becoming an Important Defence

The long-term response to red rot is increasingly centred on varietal replacement.

In January 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Council of Sugarcane Research introduced 10 red-rot-resistant sugarcane varieties as part of efforts to reduce the disease threat and improve productivity. The varieties had undergone extensive field testing for disease resistance and yield performance, according to a report on the initiative.

The move is significant because the red rot problem exposed the risk of depending heavily on susceptible Co 0238.

Balrampur's sugar industry has also been working on varietal diversification. Balrampur Chini Mills, which operates major sugar units in the region, has reported efforts involving disease management and the replacement of vulnerable cane varieties. Its annual-report disclosures describe measures including soil treatment and disease-management practices, while a later company report noted that the area under Co 0238 had become very low because of red rot.

What This Means for Farmers and Sugar Mills

For farmers, a serious red rot problem can mean lower cane yields, higher replanting costs and potentially weaker farm income.

For sugar mills, the impact can extend to cane availability and sugar recovery. A lower supply of healthy cane can affect crushing volumes and factory utilisation.

This is particularly relevant for investors tracking sugar companies. Disease risk is only one factor among many, but cane availability, recovery rates, sugar prices, ethanol economics and weather conditions can collectively influence the financial performance of sugar mills.

Balrampur Chini Mills has previously reported that red rot infestation and adverse weather affected cane availability, while varietal balancing and disease-management measures helped the company maintain comparatively better sugar recovery.

The key investor point is that disease-related crop risk should be assessed alongside the company's actual cane availability and recovery data rather than treated as an automatic signal to buy or sell a stock.

What Farmers Should Do Now

Farmers in Balrampur should treat unusual yellowing, drying or internal red discoloration as a reason for immediate inspection.

The practical priorities are straightforward:

  1. Inspect fields regularly, particularly after prolonged rainfall.

  2. Improve drainage and prevent standing water.

  3. Remove suspected infected plants after obtaining appropriate local guidance.

  4. Avoid using diseased cane as planting material.

  5. Prefer locally recommended disease-resistant varieties for future planting.

  6. Consult agricultural experts before using fungicides or other crop-protection products.

The objective is not merely to treat an infected field but to prevent the disease from becoming established across the wider cane-growing area.

Outlook: Variety Replacement Could Reduce the Risk

The experience of Balrampur and other Uttar Pradesh districts shows why sugarcane disease management has become a structural issue for the state's sugar economy.

The introduction of new red-rot-resistant varieties in 2026 is a positive development, but adoption, availability of quality planting material and performance under local conditions will determine how quickly farmers can reduce their dependence on susceptible varieties.

For now, the message for Balrampur farmers is clear: red rot should not be ignored, especially during periods of prolonged rainfall and waterlogging. Early detection, proper drainage, healthy planting material and suitable varieties remain the most important lines of defence.

The disease has already demonstrated its ability to affect large areas of Uttar Pradesh's sugarcane belt. For farmers, acting before symptoms spread across the field can make the difference between containing a problem and facing a much larger crop loss.
