Passengers travelling on some major trains connecting Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi need to plan carefully for the first week of September. Indian Railways has announced temporary changes to the routes and stoppages of several trains because of patch doubling and non-interlocking work between Gorakhpur Cantt and Unaula stations in the Varanasi division.
The operational changes will affect trains including the Bihar Sampark Kranti Express, Shaheed Express and Amrit Bharat Express between August 31 and September 4, 2026. Some trains will run on diverted routes, while several scheduled stations will be skipped during the affected trips.

Train No. 14674: Amritsar–Jaynagar
The reverse-direction Amritsar–Jaynagar Shaheed Express, departing Amritsar on September 1, will also run on a changed route.
Its route will be diverted through Barabanki, Ayodhya Cantt, Varanasi Junction, Varanasi City, Mau and Bhatni.
The train will skip the scheduled stops at Jarwal Road, Gonda, Mankapur, Babhnan, Basti, Khalilabad, Gorakhpur and Deoria Sadar.
Amrit Bharat Express Route Also Affected
The Khatiupura–Darbhanga Amrit Bharat Express, Train No. 19725, will also operate differently during the affected period.
The trains departing from Khatiupura on September 1 and 2 will take the route:
Barabanki → Ayodhya Cantt → Shahganj → Mau → Bhatni → Siwan → Thawe → Kaptanganj
Because of the route change, the train will not halt at Gonda and Gorakhpur.
The opposite service, Train No. 19726 Darbhanga–Khatiupura Amrit Bharat Express, departing Darbhanga on September 3, will not follow the same kind of full route diversion. Instead, railway operations will be controlled by 45 minutes in the Varanasi division, potentially affecting its running time.
Several Other Trains Are Also Affected
The changes are not limited to these three trains.
Railway operations during the work period will affect multiple services running through the Gorakhpur region. Reports say 13 express trains will operate through changed routes, while several other trains will be cancelled, rescheduled or controlled.
Among the other affected services are the Jananayak Express, Bagh Express, Jansewa Express, Vaishali Express and Katihar–Amritsar Express.
For example, the 15565 Lalitgram–New Delhi Vaishali Express departing on September 3 will be diverted via Chhapra, Varanasi Junction, Ayodhya Cantt and Barabanki, and will skip several scheduled stops including Siwan, Deoria Sadar, Gorakhpur, Khalilabad, Basti and Gonda.
Some Trains Will Also Run Late
Passengers should also be prepared for delays because route diversions are not the only operational change.
Several trains have been rescheduled or controlled during the construction period.

15705 Katihar–Delhi Champaran Humsafar Express: rescheduled by 1 hour 15 minutes on September 3.
19726 Darbhanga–Khatiupura Amrit Bharat Express: controlled for 45 minutes in the Varanasi division.
These are temporary changes connected with the railway works and should not be confused with permanent timetable revisions.
