AIM-424 Malice vs PL-15: How Dangerous Is America’s New Long-Range Missile?



The United States has unveiled a new long-range air-to-air missile that could significantly change the balance of aerial warfare in the Indo-Pacific. The weapon, known as the AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile (LRAAM) or “Malice,” is being developed by Raytheon for the US Navy and Marine Corps.

The US Navy says the AIM-424 is designed to strengthen fleet defence and provide greater range, lethality and combat effectiveness against advanced aerial threats. Publicly disclosed information puts its range at more than 250 nautical miles, or over 463 kilometres.

That figure has immediately attracted attention because it appears to exceed publicly reported estimates for China's best-known long-range air-to-air missiles, including the PL-15.

But calling AIM-424 the definitive “PL-15 killer” would go beyond what the available evidence proves. The real significance of Malice lies in the broader US strategy: combining long-range missiles with stealth fighters, advanced sensors and networked warfare to engage threats before they can get close to American forces.

What Is the AIM-424 Malice?

AIM-424 is a next-generation long-range air-to-air missile (LRAAM) being developed by the Department of the Navy.

Unlike short-range missiles designed for close combat, an LRAAM is intended for beyond-visual-range engagements, where aircraft can potentially attack each other from hundreds of kilometres away.

The US Navy says the weapon is designed for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-generation aircraft and is intended to support the current and future naval air wing.

Publicly revealed characteristics include:

  • Range: More than 250 nautical miles (463 km)

  • Diameter: 13.5 inches

  • Length: Approximately 13.5 feet

  • Weight: About 1,500 pounds

Why Is AIM-424 Being Developed?

The answer is closely linked to the changing nature of air combat in the Indo-Pacific.

The US and China are engaged in a major competition involving fighter aircraft, aircraft carriers, missiles, radar systems, electronic warfare and long-range sensors.

In such an environment, getting close to the enemy can be extremely dangerous.

A missile with very long reach can potentially allow a fighter to engage an opposing aircraft while remaining farther away from enemy fighters and air-defence systems.

The US Navy describes the concept behind LRAAM as maintaining a “first look, first shot, first kill” advantage. In simple terms, the objective is to detect the opponent first, launch first and destroy the threat before it can respond effectively.

That concept is becoming increasingly important as both countries develop aircraft and missiles capable of fighting at greater distances.

AIM-424 vs China’s PL-15

This is where the story becomes particularly interesting.

China's PL-15 is already regarded as one of its most important long-range air-to-air missiles. It has been developed for aircraft such as the J-20 and other advanced Chinese fighters.

Open-source estimates of the PL-15's exact maximum range vary, and the true performance of modern missiles is normally classified.

The AIM-424, however, has a US Navy-published range of more than 463 km. Naval News reported that this would exceed publicly known estimates for Chinese air-to-air missiles that are considered major threats to US airpower in the Pacific.

That gives Malice an apparent range advantage on paper.

But range alone does not determine the winner.

An air-to-air missile's effectiveness depends on its seeker, guidance, propulsion, data links, target information, electronic-warfare resistance and ability to manoeuvre during the final phase of flight.

The aircraft launching the missile is equally important.

So, AIM-424 may have an impressive range advantage, but there is not enough public information to conclude that it can automatically defeat the PL-15 in combat.

The F-35C + AIM-424 Combination Could Be More Important

Perhaps the most significant part of the story is not the missile by itself.

It is the combination of AIM-424 with the F-35C.

The US Navy has released imagery showing the missile mounted inside the internal weapons bay of an F-35C. Naval News also reported a fit test involving the F-35 earlier in August 2026.

The F-35C is a carrier-based stealth fighter designed to operate from US aircraft carriers.

Stealth can make an aircraft harder for an opponent to detect and track, while a long-range missile gives it greater engagement reach.

Put the two capabilities together and the potential tactical advantage becomes clear:

The aircraft may be able to approach or operate in contested airspace with reduced detectability, use its sensors and network to identify a target, and launch a long-range missile before the opposing aircraft can get close.

That is much more significant than simply saying the missile has a 463-km range.

It Could Also Protect US Carrier Groups

The AIM-424 is not necessarily about shooting down enemy fighters alone.

Modern carrier operations depend on a network of aircraft.

Fighter jets protect the carrier and conduct offensive missions, while tanker aircraft extend operational range and airborne early-warning platforms help detect and track threats.

If an adversary can attack these high-value support aircraft from long distances, the entire carrier air wing can become more vulnerable.

A very-long-range air-to-air missile can potentially push the threat farther away from those assets.

That could be particularly relevant in the Western Pacific, where distances are enormous and the survivability of aircraft carriers and their supporting aircraft is a central strategic concern.

AIM-424 Is Not Yet a Fully Operational “China Killer”

This distinction is important.

The US Navy confirms that AIM-424 is under development, and detailed information about its capabilities and deployment timeline remains classified.

At least one captive-carry flight test was publicly disclosed in April 2026, while additional aircraft integration activity has been reported.

But testing a missile is not the same as having a fully operational weapon available in large numbers.

The US military will still need to complete development, testing, integration and procurement before Malice can become a major operational capability.

Therefore, headlines claiming that America has already deployed a missile that makes China's PL-15 irrelevant should be treated cautiously.

America Is Building a Larger Long-Range Missile Family

AIM-424 is also not appearing in isolation.

The US Navy already has the AIM-174B, an air-launched version of the SM-6, which became operationally relevant in 2024.

The United States is also pursuing other long-range air-to-air programmes, including the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile.

Naval News reported that AIM-424's range and speed exceed those of the AIM-174B, while its design is intended to retain manoeuvrability despite its large size.

This points toward a broader US approach: instead of relying on one missile, Washington is developing a layered long-range air-combat capability.

Different missiles can serve different targets and engagement conditions.

What Does This Mean for China?

China is unlikely to simply sit still.

If the US successfully deploys a missile capable of engaging targets at very long distances, Beijing could respond through several avenues: improved missiles, better electronic warfare, more capable sensors, longer-range aircraft and tactics designed to disrupt the US targeting chain.

This is why modern missile competition is not simply about missile versus missile.

It is increasingly about sensor versus sensor and network versus network.

If an aircraft cannot detect and track its target accurately enough to provide the missile with useful targeting information, even a very long-range missile becomes less valuable.

That makes satellites, airborne early-warning aircraft, radars, data links and electronic warfare systems just as important as the missile itself.

Defence Industry Implications

The programme also has a clear defence-industry angle.

AIM-424 is being developed by Raytheon, an RTX business. The company has been receiving substantial US defence contracts across missile and radar programmes, reflecting the broader increase in demand for advanced weapons and military technology.

For investors, however, AIM-424 alone should not be treated as a reason to buy or sell RTX stock.

The eventual financial impact will depend on production quantities, procurement contracts, delivery schedules and whether the weapon becomes a large-scale programme.

The larger investment theme is the rising demand for long-range missiles, advanced radar, electronic warfare, stealth aircraft and integrated defence systems.

What Should Be Watched Next?

Several developments will determine whether AIM-424 becomes a genuine game-changer:

Further flight testing: More tests should reveal how quickly the programme is moving toward operational maturity.

F-35C integration: Successful internal carriage and weapons integration will be particularly important.

Production contracts: Procurement orders will provide a clearer indication of the weapon's eventual scale.

AIM-260 development: The relationship between America's different long-range missile programmes will be worth watching.

Chinese response: Improvements to the PL-15, future Chinese missiles and countermeasures could reshape the balance.

Sixth-generation aircraft: AIM-424 is being designed with future platforms in mind, including America's next-generation fighter programmes.

The Bottom Line

America's AIM-424 Malice is an important development in the US-China air-power competition. With a publicly stated range of more than 463 kilometres, it appears designed to give US naval and Marine aviation forces an unusually long reach against advanced aerial threats.

Its apparent range advantage over publicly estimated Chinese air-to-air missile ranges is certainly notable. But calling it the unquestionable “father of the PL-15” would be more headline than verified military analysis.

The real advantage could come from the complete system: F-35C stealth, advanced sensors, data networks and an extremely long-range missile working together.

If AIM-424 successfully moves from testing to large-scale operational deployment, China will have to account for a new US capability that could push the engagement zone hundreds of kilometres farther away.

For now, the missile is best understood not as a guaranteed China-killer, but as another major step in the rapidly escalating race for long-range air superiority.
