US Navy Unveils AIM-424 Malice: The 463-Km Missile Built for the China Challenge
The US Navy has publicly revealed the AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile (LRAAM), known as “Malice,” giving the world its first detailed look at a weapon that had largely remained out of public view.
The new missile is designed to extend the range at which US naval and Marine aviation forces can engage airborne threats. According to the US Navy, the AIM-424 has a range of more than 250 nautical miles, or over 463 kilometres. It is being developed by Raytheon and is intended for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-generation aircraft.
The timing is significant. The United States and China are engaged in a growing military-technology competition, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. China has invested heavily in long-range air-to-air weapons and aircraft designed to challenge US carrier operations.
The AIM-424 appears to be Washington's answer to a central problem of modern air combat: how to detect, target and engage an enemy aircraft before it can get close enough to threaten your own force.
What Is the AIM-424 Malice?
The AIM-424 is a Long Range Air-to-Air Missile, or LRAAM.

Why Is the US Developing Such a Long-Range Missile?
The answer is closely connected to the changing military balance in the Indo-Pacific.
China has developed a large family of long-range missiles and increasingly capable combat aircraft. For the US Navy, this creates a difficult operating environment around potential conflict zones such as the Taiwan Strait and the wider Western Pacific.
A carrier strike group's aircraft may need to operate at considerable distances from hostile aircraft, missile batteries and other threats.
That makes range increasingly valuable.
The US Navy's objective is not simply to fire a missile farther. It is to give its aircraft the ability to detect and engage threatening aircraft from greater distances while keeping the launching aircraft and the wider carrier force farther away from danger.

But direct comparisons should be treated carefully.
Publicly available information about the actual operational range and performance of modern air-to-air missiles is often incomplete. Governments generally do not publish the full performance envelope of their most advanced weapons.
What can be said with greater confidence is that the US Navy's stated 463-km-plus range places AIM-424 in an extremely long-range category. The Navy's own description focuses on maintaining air-domain overmatch against advanced threats rather than identifying one specific Chinese missile as the target.
So, headlines describing Malice as simply the “PL-15 killer” may be too simplistic.
The broader story is a competition over who can see first, shoot first and survive the engagement.
The F-35C Connection Makes AIM-424 Even More Interesting
One of the most notable features of AIM-424 is its compatibility with the F-35C, the carrier-based version of the F-35 stealth fighter.
Images released by the US Navy show the missile associated with an F-35C's internal weapons bay. The missile is also being tested with the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, while the Navy says the weapon is designed for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-generation platforms.
That combination matters.
A stealth aircraft such as the F-35C can potentially approach or operate in contested airspace while reducing its radar signature. If it can also carry a very long-range air-to-air weapon internally, the aircraft could potentially engage threats from considerable distances without sacrificing its stealth configuration.
This is one reason the AIM-424 could become an important part of the future carrier air wing.
A Big Weapon With a Different Role
AIM-424 should not simply be viewed as a replacement for the AIM-120 AMRAAM.
The new missile is considerably larger and heavier. Its published weight is around 680 kg, while its diameter is 13.5 inches. That physical size reflects the emphasis on very long-range performance.
The US military is simultaneously developing other long-range air-to-air weapons, including the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile and the AIM-174B.
That suggests Washington is building a layered air-to-air arsenal, with different missiles intended for different ranges, aircraft and missions.
The AIM-424 appears designed to fill the extreme long-range role within that broader system.
What Does This Mean for Aircraft Carriers?
The strategic importance may extend beyond fighter-versus-fighter combat.
A modern carrier strike group depends on a network of aircraft. Fighters provide air defence and offensive capability, while tankers, airborne early-warning aircraft and other platforms extend the fleet's operational reach.
If an opponent can threaten those support aircraft from long distances, the carrier air wing can become much less effective.
A very-long-range missile can potentially change that equation by allowing fighters to threaten enemy aircraft before those aircraft get close enough to attack high-value assets.

What We Still Don't Know
Despite the impressive headline range, many important details remain classified.
The US Navy has not publicly disclosed the missile's complete guidance and seeker architecture, its exact maximum speed, engagement envelope, terminal performance or operational deployment date.
And range alone does not determine whether an air-to-air missile will hit its target.
Modern aerial combat involves sensors, electronic warfare, datalinks, target tracking, aircraft manoeuvring and the ability of the target to detect and defeat an incoming missile.
A missile with an impressive theoretical range is not automatically effective at that entire distance in every combat scenario.
This is why the AIM-424's real significance will become clearer as more information emerges from testing and eventual operational deployment.
The Defence Industry Angle
The programme also matters commercially because Raytheon, an RTX business, is the contractor developing the weapon.
Raytheon President Phil Jasper said the company's Advanced Technology team is developing AIM-424 to strengthen fleet defence and address emerging long-range air-to-air threats.
For defence investors, the broader trend is worth watching.
The US military is increasingly investing in long-range weapons, advanced sensors, stealth platforms and networked warfare capabilities. That can create long-term opportunities across missile manufacturing, propulsion, radar, electronic warfare and aerospace systems.
However, investors should distinguish between a newly revealed weapon programme and immediate commercial revenue. Production quantities, contracts, procurement schedules and delivery timelines will ultimately determine the financial impact on defence companies.
